The Chiefs Three Starting Quarterbacks

Stay connected for news and updates

The last time Kansas City Chiefs GM Scott Pioli made the media rounds he said that the Chiefs have three starting-caliber quarterbacks in Matt Cassel, Brady Quinn and Ricky Stanzi.

A series of backup quarterback rankings on ESPN disagrees with that notion. ESPN bloggers rated the backup quarterbacks in the NFL and over in the AFC West Bill Williamson gave the Chiefs a 35 out of a possible 100. I'm not really sure where the rating comes from but it places the Chiefs in the bottom half of the league, which is about right.

Ironically, the top-ranked backup quarterback was a Chief just three months ago. Kyle Orton joined the Cowboys this offseason with what was a rich contract for a backup quarterback.

The Chiefs backup quarterbacks have 12 combined starts between them and Stanzi accounts for zero of those. This will be one of the four or five most talked about Chiefs stories this offseason but the reality is that we more than likely won't figure this out until training camp.

OK, two backup quarterback stories in one day is enough.
