The Kansas City Chiefs training camp schedule for the 2012 season has been released. The Chiefs will be up on the campus of Missouri Western State University from Friday, July 27 to Thursday, August 16. Each day will include a walk-through, which is not open to the public, and a practice, which is open to the public. Most of the practices open to the public take place at 3:20 p.m.
I ran through the list and jotted some thoughts on a few of my favorite practice days. If you only have one day to visit Chiefs camp this year, it should be one of these days below.
The first practice of the year
This is always an exciting time because we haven't seen the Chiefs on the field since January. The first practice allows us to see how the players actually line up on the field. And, the best part, we can actually see some hitting. The offseason program to this point hasn't allowed an full contact practices but we'll get that when they line up on Friday, July 27 at 3:20 p.m.
The night practice
On Tuesday, July 31 the Chiefs will host a night practice at Spratt Stadium, the big stadium on the campus of MWSU. This is usually my favorite event for one good reason -- the weather. It's hot in Kansas City in August. Really hot. The night practices are a good time to actually enjoy the weather while you watch Chiefs practice, and not having to worry about drinking enough water to survive. This is my favorite practice of the year.
Family Fun Day
On Saturday, August 4 the Chiefs will host the third annual Family Fun Day. For those of you seeking autographs, this is the best event to come to. The players will practice at Spratt Stadium at 1:30 p.m. and afterwards they'll be signing autographs. Based on past years, you can get just about any autograph you want at this event. The players are good about signing a lot of them. This event will also have other things going on for kids.
This is all unconfirmed at this point but the Missouri Western AD indicated that the Chiefs and Cardinals would likely reach a deal that would have the Cardinals spending some time on the MWSU campus before their preseason game at Arrowhead Stadium on August 10. According to the AD, the likely dates for the Cardinals practice in St. Joe are August 7 and 8, with the possibility of an August 9 practice as well. Those practices on August 7 and 8 would be joint practices with the Chiefs while the Cardinals could choose to take the field on August 9, one day before the preseason game against the Chiefs. The Chiefs are scheduled off for August 9.
The last practice of training camp
This comes on Thursday, August 16 at 3:20 p.m. The Chiefs play the Arizona Cardinals in their first preseason game on August 10 and they'll return to St. Joe for a week of practice before taking off for preseason game No. 2. If you want to see the Chiefs at training camp, you'll have to come up sometime before this date.
