The Chiefs need to make resigning Dwayne Bowe the number one concern for the rest of the offseason and the top priority during the season. If the Chiefs aren't able to get Bowe signed to a deal that would make him happy he will become a free agent at the end of the season and could go elsewhere which would be disastrous for the Chiefs. Bowe has yet to sign his franchise tender although all signs is that he will be at training camp. Bowe is most likely looking for a very lucractive deal similar to that of Roddy White, 6 years, $50 million. This is not the type of contract the Chiefs and Pioli would be looking to sign Bowe to, based on previous free agent situations, example being Brandon Carr.
Although the Chiefs appear deep at receiver the Chiefs cant afford to let Bowe get away. With career highs in TDs and yards in 2010 and his second highest total in receptions in 2011, it is obvious how vital Bowe is to the Chiefs aerial attack. Another reason resigning Bowe is so critical is that the Chiefs aren't deep at receiver they just appear that way. The only other receivers on the roster outside of Bowe are Breaston, Wylie, Baldwin, Copper, Hemingway and Horne. Breaston is on the backside of his career and we have no idea what to expect from Baldwin or Wylie, now or long term. With Copper, Horne and Hemingway to be used mostly in special teams or on the practice squad, if on the roster at all. That leaves only one elite level receiver on the roster, that being Bowe. If they cant sign Bowe long term then they would have to replace him, in all likely hood through the draft, but the only top tier receiver I see in next years draft is Robert Woods from USC. And he is slated to go in the top 10 and if the Chiefs pick next year is in the top 10 I would like to see them pick a QB not a WR.
The Chiefs need to understand how vital Bowe is to their offense and get him signed up long term, open the wallet Pioli and pay him what he deserves. Because without Bowe in the future this passing attack which was pedestrian last year, can only go one way and that is down.
