Since it is well known that I desire a backup for our starting Offensive Tackles, and the guy I was targeting had some kinda minor mishap, it is necessary to look around for someone else. Even though the draft is here, and we are in an appealing spot to draft a pretty good candidate at 11, I think that pick will go somewhere else than the OT position. The Iowa connection has Reilly Reiff coming this way for some, but I was underwhelmed with his pas blocking and think the team might be as well. So what to do?
Enter a beat up, older but still serviceable guy recently cut from Green Bay named Chad Clifton. A twelve year starter with at least 1 ring, he has the kind of credentials that would lend us a savvy, experienced player who could contribute off the field, as well as on, if called upon. We would still need to find another guy to train up for the spot. However Clifton would fill the bill as an experienced stop gap player. The joker in the deck is his untimely release by Green Bay.
It could be a cap thing, or it could be a health thing. It would merit some investigation if the team was interested in an aging, proven player at a need position. As most realize, Green Bay has drafted other Tackles which may make this release a cap friendly move. But it is possible he showed up to the workouts in poor condition and the Pack were comfortable with their young guys. Still, for a team in our situation with no known or proven backup at a very needed position he is worth a looksee. Go Chief's
