Romeo, the Center and LaCharles Bentley

Way back years ago, our Head Coach Romeo Crennel, also known as RAC-his initials, was given a job to coach the Cleveland Browns. One of his key moves was to sign a top notch Center in LaCharles Bentley. Some will remember this and the subsequent tragedy that was involved. This big time need for the Browns came to town and then was injured severely in the process of preparing for the season. Unfortunately for LaCharles, the Browns and RAC he never recovered to play as well as expected when he was signed. We have seen how injury to key players can affect a season.

Why do I bring up this old news? Well it interests me to see what RAC was doing to improve his team, and how the thought process may have something to do here with our present team and this years draft. If you missed it, CENTER was a key piece in what he had planned for his club to improve. We have no proven Center on this team and this draft has a couple of pretty good Centers in it. So I wonder if we go get one. When I mention several persons pick of the Guard from Stanford to be played at Center, the uproar is loud to say the least. However, the kid is projected to have the ability to play all positions along the Offensive Line but Left Tackle and would he fill the bill for the Chief's as a Center?

There are several Centers in this draft with Peter Konz projected as the best Center in this draft and could be a good alternative if we traded down in the first. There is many scenario's that are involved this draft with our lack of a really big hole to fill. We have debated most of these for awhile now. With the signing of Right Tackle Eric Winston, the biggest need was addressed in Free Agency. Unlike many here at this site, I remain unconvinced that Rodney Hudson is going to be the man to man the Center position for us. He may end playing the position and doing it well for years to come, but I will believe when I see it. I wonder if the teams management and coaching staff wonder this as well.

Most of you know I really want a particular Offensive Tackle in this draft, but I still see a need for the general improvement in the interior of the line as well. Upgrading the Center position would pay dividends for this club, and a versatile interior prospect would be good to have. To bad it isn't 1 size fits all for the line positions, it would make building a team easy. Go Chief's!!!!
