Many, including myself, think our beloved Kansas City Chief's could use some more talent in the Defensive Backfield. After watching the team fall so quickly when Eric Berry was injured, and seeing some journeyman replacements play, it was apparent that we need some help in the secondary. Compounding this was the departure of a starting Corner Back named Brandon Carr. Yikes, we need help, right????
If you look at our roster as it stands now, we have a plethora of players under contract for the secondary. Go ahead and take a look, there are 11 by my count. 7 CB's, 1 Safety and 3 Defensive Backs. What the Hell are we doing with only 1 Safety? It is a little misleading as Eric Berry and Kendrick Lewis are listed as DB's, not S's. So is Arenas. The only Safety listed is recently signed Kyle McCarthy who wasn't even in the league last year. So all is not FUBAR'ed, just a bit misleading to us football junkies. We KNOW that Berry and Lewis are Safeties from past experience and we shouldn't be overly concerned about who is described as what.
What is interesting to me is how Scotty Pioli has been ahead of the curve, so to speak, in filling the holes left by Carr leaving and the lack of depth at the Safety position. I personally am not overly concerned whether Stanford Routt can play or not as he has shown to be able to in the past, when he was paired up with a good CB. This McCarthy signing is interesting as he has some experience in the league with a couple of other teams. We will have to wait and see if he can play a supporting role or not here.
I am a bit curious at Donald Washington's future. He has shown really good physical tools, but a pro needs more than just those physical skills to stay in the league and I question if he makes the squad again this year. He's listed as a CB, but has played a multitude of roles, but that is no excuse for him to be out of position as much as he seems to be. Travis Daniels listed as a CB like D.Wash, also provided the team with an ability to play other roles in the secondary. Jalil Brown, listed as a CB, is still an unknown quantity, playing a few downs last season, getting to know the NFL. Have hopes for his contributions, but his exact role is yet unknown. Javier Arenas listed as a DB, plays some nickel and dime situations and maybe is not the best at coverage, is fast, quick and a pretty sure tackler. He showed some good flash as a specialty Running Back and could see more carries under Coach Daboll.
Another guy new to the team, listed as a CB, is Jaques Reeves. He is a totally unknown player thus far but we have to allow him some credit as having some talents or Pioli wouldn't have signed him. All in all I think we are in pretty decent shape, but it will not be surprising to have some young talent brought in to compete. With the possibility of expanded rosters, subject to Owner's approval at the summer meetings, we may have the space to carry another DB. so the Question is for me, " Do we need to prioritize a DB in the draft?" Go Chief's!!!!
