Damn Interesting thought

.........If I have a LB that covers like a FS and safties that can run with these slot receivers and TEs, I can play my base package on 1st and 2nd down, saving those exotic zone blitz and man zone looks for 3rd down. I really think safety is gonna b the new lynch pin position on defense, but alot of teams don’t have a Berry, Reed, Polamalu or Earl Thomas back there ----------- Ajit says: April 10, 2012 at 2:10 pm You’re right Dave. the problem with defenses that go sub most of the time is what about teams like ne that can go directly from base to sub with the same personnel? thats essentially what crushed the jets last year. Jets played the entire game in sub and while it worked for a while, ne went into base and no huddled the jets and ran all over them. From my view, i don’t think lb’s can ever go so light as to be strictly cover guys. They will always be run stuffers first and foremost, meaning the task to covering those slot receivers, rbs, and tight ends will fall to the safeties. The safety is going to have to really fill the role of a guy who can play man to man more than just zone. The giants defense succeeded in part because they could basically stay in sub and be effective with their 4 2 5 or or 4 1 6 with 3 corners and 3 safeties.
