The word on the street these days is that some guy names Peyton Manning is a free agent now and that the Chiefs may be interested in his services. If somehow we are able land a QB who will go down as one of the greatest QB's of all time, then what will the Chiefs do about the backup QB situation? Matt Cassel is due to make a little over $5 million this upcoming season and Ricky Stanzi is still an unknown commodity. Here is a thought on what I think could/should happen after the jump...
First I'll start with Ricky Stanzi
I like Ricky, but he is an unknown. I feel like he didn't get a fair chance to show anything when Cassel went down. Was he not ready to play yet? No one really knows. What I do know is that half way through the Steelers game after Tyler Palko had committed his 6th turnover in less than 2 games, he should have been moved to the bench. Stanzi could not have been any worse and the Chiefs still had a chance to win the game in spite of Palko. So I think that Stanzi stays on as the 3rd QB at the very least.
Next we have our Pro Bowl QB Matt Cassel
As everyone already knows at this point, Matt is not the answer at QB. We know he can get us to the playoffs, but that's about it. When/if Peyton does come to the Chiefs, Cassel automatically become the #2 QB. Now I am fine and all with Matt being the #2, but $5 million is a lot for a back up. If he doesn't renegotiate his contract to more of a backup QB's pay grade, he may be one of the surprise cut's of the offseason because there are other FA QB's out there who's skill set is on par with Matt who could be had at a cheaper price.
Which brings me to Chad Henne
The reason I bring him up is because I think his days as being a starter in the NFL are numbered. He is almost a carbon copy of Matt, except he has a bigger arm. He already has a rapport with Daboll, so he would already know some of the offense that would be installed. Also he wouldn't be that expensive to sign and you could let him and Stanzi battle it out for the #2 spot.
Well Chiefs fans let me know what you think.
