Free Agency Departures

The signing of Stanford Routt was a great move. We got him for a massive discount. He signed a 3-year $31.5 million contract in early 2011 and he just signed a 3-year $19.6 million contract with the Chiefs less than a year later, not a good year. In today's NFL, a passing league, you have to be able to cover. This is why the signing made perfect sense. That said, Brandon Carr is a very good corner. In my opinion, he is every bit as good as Flowers. Advanced statistics agree with this notion. Certainly after the signing of Routt it became overwhelmingly apparent that we would not resign Carr. This still seems to be the case. I am fine with letting Carr leave but not via free agency where the return is minimal (a compensatory 3rd round pick). It was a tough situation. Most fans probably wanted both Bowe and Carr, but there is only one Franchise Tag. In this situation, regardless of who you sign longterm, you have to get one under contract to set up a tag and trade situation with the other. Clearly, with Routt under contract, tagging and trading Carr made the most sense. I don't care if you have to overpay Bowe. Overpaying here is essentially paying extra dollars for a draft pick. Giving Bowe a few extra guaranteed dollars would have in effect bought us another high round draft pick. By letting Carr leave via free agency we will only get a 3rd round pick. Had we franchised him we would have received at least, at least, a 2nd round pick from another team. As a GM how do you not get this done?
