IT IS THE 2012 OFFSEASON FRENZY OF MOCK DRAFTS AND FREE AGENCY SPLASHES. THE EXCITEMENT OF WHAT PLAYERS OUR KANSAS CITY CHIEFS WILL ACQUIRE IS AT ITS APEX!
THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF COMBINATIONS OF PLAYER ACQUISITIONS THAT WOULD MAKE OUR CHIEFS BETTER, YET LOST IN THE EXCITEMENT IS THE HONEST TRUTH ABOUT OUR ROSTER. AND WITH LESS THEN A FEW MONTHS BEFORE IT ALL COMES TO FRUITION, IT SEEMS EVERYONE IS MISSING THE OBVIOUS AND MOST PROMISING PART OF THE OFFSEASON FOR THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS. THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS ROSTER HAS VERY FEW HOLES AND IS PRIMED TO MAKE A BIG MOVE TO FILL THE BIGGEST OF THEM ALL.
AMATEUR AND EXPERT ANALYST ALIKE HAVE FAILED TO CONNECT WHAT THE MOCK DRAFTS ARE SAYING LOUD AND CLEAR. AND WHILE THE FRONT OFFICE OF OUR CHIEFS MAY ALREADY BE AWAY OF WHAT I’M ABOUT TO SPELL OUT FOR EVERYBODY ELSE, IT NEEDS TO BE EXPLAINED TO THE FAN BASE. MY TAKE ON IT AFTER THE JUMP!
If we begin at the source of the mock drafts and speculation of what roster moves our front office will make this year, we have to identify the weakest links in the chain. Lets take a look at the most obvious below:
Just recently Kansas City front office released statements saying that there will be competition at the QB position. While we are not horrible at the position with Cassel starting and a promising Stanzi riding the pine, we are nowhere near competitive at the position as the teams that contend for conference titles regularly.
Arguably the biggest chink in the armor, their isn’t a lot of wiggle room at this position. Brandon Albert is among the upper echelon of protection for the QBs blind side. But if Albert is the sister in a metaphor, that leaves Barry on the right side as the ugly sister. In just a few years of service Richardson has done anything but impress, and while he isn’t totally useless at run blocking he might as well be laying on his back legs spread eagle in pass protection. Richardson would serve us better as depth, if we can When we upgrade at Right Tackle. We are one OT away from having a stellar line.
The black eye of the Phenomenal Chiefs Defense hasn’t been as bleak as other less talented Defensive units in the league but an upgrade would be welcome with open arms to excel the play of the entire unit. With plenty of options, both stopgap and permanent being readily available threw both free agency and draft position 1 threw 4. It has been evident that our defense can still play at a high level with middle of the pack players at this position.
While the play of the Kansas City Chiefs Middle linebackers has been more then serviceable, it could use an upgrade. Derrick Johnson leads the middle of our defense well and just recently was named to the all-star squad he could use help.
Jevons belcher as an undrafted free agent has been serviceable, but lacks the explosiveness and mean streak of a Mike-linebacker that would boost our linebacker core to the top of the league.
Across the board
While Chiefs have playmakers at almost every position on the roster, 2011 proved that having a quality bench is paramount to succeed in a league plagued by injury. Each year every team brings in undrafted players and acquires veteran journeymen and so called bust to shore up the bench in hopes that even just a few of those players turn out serviceable. With the right drafting in later rounds in the draft, Piolis track record speaks to being able to do just that.
Look at our holes, and then go take a look around the league at other rosters, in doing so with a keen eye you will find a pattern, every team every year has holes! From Detroit’s lack of secondary, to the superbowl champions lack of an O-Line and linebacker core. With this being a fact, and with Kansas city having elite level talent at key positions, In my opinion it’s the ideal time to seek, target and acquirer the key to every successful consistent competitive team, The Franchise quarterback! With 2012 presenting options in the forms of draft prospects like Robert Griffin III to Free agents like Peyton Manning Scott Pioli is faced with a few decisions.
Risk everything and go for a young prospect in RG3 that could potentially be the QBOTF that takes the chiefs to the promise land. Along with increase the Chiefs bottom line by selling more jerseys then yards that Tebow overthrows receivers. Or sign a free agent the like of Jason Campbell or Kyle Orton (BOOOOOO). Or go after Manning who might not be around to see John Baldwin grow a full mustache but could take this talented team for a supersized cup that they can hold high over their heads in a parade in one or two years.
The whole point of this post was to introduce and reinforce my opinion that it doesn’t get much better then it is right now to throw a bunch of draft picks at a guy that could potentially be the Red and Gold’s ticket to immortality. In my humble opinion we should use those draft picks, that we get free every year, to go up and get "our guy". Weather that’s Andrew Luck (fat chance but weirder things have happened, Robert Griffin III after trumping all those bottom feeding teams, or Tannehill (whose name to me is to much like Blackledge in its uncommonness). Whoever you think the Chiefs should go get between those names doesn’t matter. What matters is that with a dynamic young core and the signing of some proven players (I mean in particularly Bowe). We are in position to do exactly what Hunt aimed to do when he hired Scott Pioli.
If you don’t believe me, go do the research for yourself and see that the Patriots made it to the big game with their backup wide receivers playing Cornerback and a rotating door at MLB and DE. Find out that the 49ers quality wide receivers and special teams players. Ponder at the broncos play without a QB at all and wide recivers that wouldn’t start anywhere else in the NFL. The chiefs are not far removed from the top 5 teams in the NFL, except for at the QB position.
NO GUTS NO GLORY PIOLI, PULL THE TRIGGER ONE WAY OR ANOTHER!!!!!!
