I wrote one more on this topic because it keeps coming up, and then I will move on. I hate watching football with my grandpa. He is so critical of the team, and so negative. I get upset like he is insulting my wife or something. I also get that way with what I call "naggy" Chiefs fans that never seem happy. The coach sucks, the quarterback sucks, and all the players who are good should go play for another team. Montana and Allen were over the hill, Marty had no guts, they griped about Gerbac, they loathed Trent Green, and they continue to belly ache and moan about Cassel. For the record I was a Gerbac supporter, and I will concede I was wrong, but I am a fan who supports the guys on the field, and I would NEVER boo any member of my team, especially at home. Anyone who would do so is not a fan, and contradicts the name Arrowhead Pride.
With that said, many of you Cassel haters I would wager fit the above description. Please do not comment about your superior football knowledge, my lack of credibility, or your extensive game study. Number seven will take the field in September, and I am writing this in hopes to shut some of y’all up so the rest of us can enjoy watching and supporting our team. So here are some comparisons for you geniuses to chew on.
Eli Manning has a career 82.1 rating 185 TDs 129 INTs, and since taking over his team has yet to drop below .500. You can also throw in two Superbowl victories to go with his Cassel-like production. Matt Cassel has an 82.5 rating 76 TDs and 45 INTs, and in four years as a starter has 2 winning seasons. Kyle Orton for you Orton lovers, 79.4 rating 80 TDs and 57 INTs, and after going 9-7 in Chicago has not had a winning season since. Carson Palmer has a career 86.3 rating 167 TDs 116 INTs, and only has 3 winning seasons. Matt Schaub has had great career posting a 92.2 rating 98 TDs and 58 INTs, but in four years only has 2 winning seasons. Injuries are not a valid excuse in my book, so save it. Besides last season counts as 1 of the 2.
So what is the point? The point is the people who say things like the Chiefs will suck as long as Cassel is the quarterback, or the front office doesn’t want to win do not know what they are talking about. Tampa Bay and the Ravens dominated their way to glory with strong defenses and no name quarterbacks. Was HasseIback really that good or was he the beneficiary of Shawn Alexander? Ask Elway why he almost went his entire career without a ring, and I bet you his first thought is Terrell Davis. I can prove my point over and over if you cared to listen, but you don’t. You want to bitch, pardon my French. There are always exceptions like Manning, Brees, Rogers, Ryan, and Brady that will guarantee success, but those guys don’t come around every day, and not all of them have ELITE tattooed on their forehead at first. Everybody says go out and get a franchise quarterback like they are sitting on a shelf somewhere waiting for general managers who "want to win."
Is Cassel the best? No he has weaknesses, but he generally makes good decisions, and he may not win all your games for you, but he won’t lose you many either. Will he take the Chiefs all the way? I don’t know but he has proven he can win, and the team around him is as solid as any other. No need to sell the farm just yet. In three seasons we got a division title and probowl out of him. I read on here somebody asked what other options have the Chiefs had that they have not explored. My answer is none. We have the best team I have ever seen in my 34 years as an immortal not die hard Chiefs fan. Matt Cassel remains the starter because he continues to be our best option to win, so please...get on…or get off.
