How Close Are We to...

Stay connected for news and updates

I was waiting to see what the heck was going on with Eric Winston before I do this. If he would not have signed, this beautiful masterpiece would never have been typed.

2003 was the last time Chiefs fans had any hope in getting to a SB. Of course as luck would have it we pull the Colts, who have been the bane of Chiefs fans since 1995. Seriously I think last year was the first time in a nice long time that the Chiefs beat the Colts.

What does 2003 have to do with Winston? Well if you don't know, follow me...

I am of course talking about the Great Wall that was the Chiefs 2003 Offensive Line. I think I can count on one hand how many times Trent Green got sacked.

For those who don't know the line went something like this:

Willie Roaf-Brian Waters-Casey Wiegmann-Will Shields-John Tait

Damn that line looks epic even in just words.

As of this moment our line looks like this:

Branden Albert-Ryan Lilja-Rodney Hudson-Jon Asamoah-Eric Winston

I will say this much as a disclaimer: Branden Albert is not near the talent of Roaf by any stroke of the imagination.

Two of our current linemen are direct successors to two of those bricks. Hudson trained under Casey and Big Jon trained under Waters.

I would venture to say that this is the closest that Chiefs fans will see to that famous line. I don't see our any of our current line going to the Hall of Fame, except maybe Winston.

Ryan is the oldest member currently at age 30 but keep in mind that Weigmann was 38 when he finally called it quits. Even if we do draft DeCastro, Lilja is one guy who I would LOVE to have as a backup.

The point is that right now this is the closest I believe to ever getting that mythical 2003 line.
