Rotoworld.com's Chris Wessling breaks down off season team needs going into 2012. Lists Chiefs "biggest need: true franchise QB," followed by retaining FAs Bowe & Carr, and finding a nose tackle.

"Coach Romeo Crennel and new coordinator Brian Daboll have both espoused confidence in Matt Cassel...It’s a recipe for continued mediocrity, even with the return to health of Jamaal Charles and Tony Moeaki."

I hate how they all jump to conclusions

Cassel is the starter as of right now so why would they bash on their own starting QB? Of course they’re always looking to make any position better, but until they for they won’t bash on anyone that’s just freaking common sense

No one is asking the Chiefs to bash Cassel publicly

But its’ obvious the QB competition won’t be valid in the sense that they obviously want Cassel to win the job outright. Teams don’t have to bash their own guy when trying to fit a need, but they have shown no interest in a position that obviously, no clearly, needs to be improved. Cassel isn’t terrible but he’s not the man to take us farther than the end of the regular season.

I don't know that - no one knows for sure 100%

But if you’re thinking of looking at other QB options, you also don’t go out and talk up your current QB with stout confidence. After talking so highly of Cassel, its an even bigger stick in the eye if you make a QB change/upgrade this offseason.

In other words, its been made pretty public that they’re sticking with Cassel but its obvious to most insider’s and analysts around the league that we have a big need at the QB position and that’s the bottom line.

So...

your saying the chiefs should come out publically and tell EVERYONE that they will be looking for a new starting qb????

What happens when they cant sign or trade up for a starting qb and are stuck with Cassel?

They have already said they would like to have Orton back and the media has blown this resounding confiendence in Cassel WAY over proportion. Listen to the press conferences, it is by no means a resounding “Yes matt is our QB”

by CWil03 on Feb 9, 2012 3:18 PM CST up reply actions

also

You know Pioli also said he wouldnt ever draft a safety at number 5….that was blown up all over the place…..and then low and behold who did he draft??

Wow maybe everything the media says isnt true??? just a thought.

Start freaking out when the start of the season comes and they havent done anything yet…..hell free agency hasnt even started, so to say you know what the chiefs are going to do is just dumb right now.

Thank you

That’s exactly the point I was trying to make. Just couldn’t really put it together

Taken out of context

First of all, I clearly never said I “know” they’re not going to take a QB in the draft or FA. But they make it seem apparent that QB is not a need.

Second of all, you’re on the side that says “Don’t bash your QB publicly” but then you’re not opposed to the "Talk him up big, make it public how confident you are in him as your “guy,” then chuck him to the curb in the draft or FA." The latter is equally as bad.

But the biggest point you’re taking out of context is that its OBVIOUS that everyone around the league makes note that the QB position is our weakness and is one of our biggest needs. Bottom line! That’s all this was ever about. Whether or not that need is met remains to be seen.

Why is it bad to talk up your current QB?

It could potentially raise his trade value, and obscure the team’s draft strategy, and keep the QB happy. I can’t really think of a reason that it would be bad to talk up your current QB.

QB’s get replaced all the time. Can you remember any long-time starters whose own coaches and GM criticized right before they replaced him? Actually, I just though of one – Cutler. He found out Denver was trying to get Cassel before any deal was done, and that ended up being really uncomfortable.

For the record, I agree that the Chiefs need to upgrade the QB spot.

They don't have to bash him, the point is moot

Its obvious to anyone with a set of eyes that the guy is not a qb that can get the job done. Meaning, he may win you some games because we overmatch the opponent, but he’s not going to lead the team in a comeback with everything on the line. He crumbles.

i agree cassel isnt the answer

and theres orton , luck , rg3, possibly peyton , matt flynn , and tannahill. of the teams that NEED a qb thats what .. miami , redskins , us , and indy ? that lets each team have a QB :)

I don’t need a true franchise QB to allow KC to win and be successful. I just want a good QB. We don’t have that right now.

by Topchief1 on Feb 9, 2012 1:25 PM CST reply actions

You don't think Cassel is in the "good" QB class?

Cassel has a lot of qualities of a “good” QB. Good is average (status quo) and that’s what he is…“good” isn’t good enough. Defense alone doesn’t win titles and with a defense like ours we can go far, but we need someone on the opposite side of the ball who excels at the QB position and can seal the deal on offense. Neither Cassel, Orton nor Stanzi* are that guy (asterisk on Stanzi because he’s an unknown but from what you can gather they don’t seem to have full confidence in him as a starter so far).

by JMagsKC1 on Feb 9, 2012 1:53 PM CST up reply actions

What qualities make Cassel good?

IMO he has terrible accuracy, cant read the defense, is prone to turnovers, has little to no pocket awareness, cant convert on third downs, stares down receievers, has no athleticism, cant throw the long ball, cant throw any throw consistently even the dinks, and makes horrible decisions.

I think he is a terrible QB so far and has not improved one bit in his career at kc.

by andrew33 on Feb 9, 2012 2:16 PM CST up reply actions

terrible terrible pocket awareness, which is crucial. I also can’t stand a QB who dances/ Plant your damn feet and deliver the ball!

by Topchief1 on Feb 9, 2012 2:22 PM CST up reply actions

You realize qb's are supposed to continue moving their feet, right?

Throwing flat footed is death. Plus, they have to be ready to scramble.

by bossmanham on Feb 9, 2012 2:29 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Cassel is what I would call a below average QB. He has 2-3 bad performances to every good performance. He would make a dependable backup. If Matt Cassel was my backup QB, I would be OK with that. If Matt Cassel was my starter, I would assume that Scott Pioli has something to do with that.

Those needs sound about right

He forgot O line. I'd put that before NT.

Especially since Pioli himself said it was a priority.

Yup Cassel is terrible, no shock factor there

A bit of the reason why I don’t want a lineman in the first round, I don’t feel as if Cassel is even worth the time of day trying to build an elite offensive line to protect him. Rather get Trent Richardson and pair him up Jamaal Charles to win games rushing the ball similarly to how we did in 2010, that way when Cassel passes he’ll still have more time to throw the ball b/c teams would be afraid of us running it on them.
