Brian Daboll Approval Poll, Take Two
We've already documented the initial reaction of the Kansas City Chiefs fan base to the hiring of Brian Daboll as offensive coordinator and it's not very good. Daboll had a low approval rating on our poll but that came shortly after the move became official when we had little information about the Chiefs new OC.
Now that it's been a few days we've had a chance to do so some more reading on Daboll and hear directly from both him and Romeo Crennel on the hiring. And it seems some fans are coming around, at least compared to the initial reaction shortly after the hire.
So, armed with a little more information, we wanted to have a "Take Two" of our Daboll approval poll. Catch up on the stories we've written about him and then vote in the poll.

I think many want to see the difference
When the “but what about Al!!!” cries had died down and people had looked into more than “Browns sucked, so Daboll sucks!” for their information
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.

I just started listening to his conference call posted on the mothership and this stood out to me

When you mess with Daboll, you get the horns.
Gonzalez? yeah he is ... very skillful indeed

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Approve
For the simple reason that it shows that the Chiefs front office is giving the coaching staff every opportunity to succeed. They are giving these guys time to develop a game plan, communicate between coaches and players, and build relationships.
Whether or not it turns out to be a good hire remains to be seen, but the fact that they haven’t sat around waiting shows that they do have some sort of a plan.

i see
Daboll is starting to grow on us a little at least me. I love his attack comments but not sure with Cassel behind center we can actually attack maybe more like a pounce or something.

The NFL is a very small fraternity
Its common for people to hire within groups they are familiar with. Not saying its always best mind you.

Indeed... or was Sparano trumping him?
Impossible to say with just a one-sided comment like that from a “prominent offensive player”. Without knowing the full story or having been there, this is all we have to go by.
I don’t know how involved Sparano was or how much he let Daboll do his own thing – but we all experienced situations here where we felt (or knew) our HC was trumping our OC – so it’s not like it’s anything new under the sun.

Or, since he considers himself a situational coach (playcalls and schemes are based on attacking the defense they're seeing at the time)....
…maybe that player had a game or three where their contributions WOULDN’T make the offense stronger on the field. No one likes to hear that their particular strength isn’t helpful, so maybe there’s some frustration there.
Or Daboll’s a dick, who knows. Time will tell, because none of us can yet.

Same as before. Not sure.
He has a bad track record, but his talent to work with has also been sub par. I’ll give him a chance to prove himself.

I don't know if you can call his track record that bad
He’s got a track record of running some poorly talented offenses, that’s it. I don’t think you can criticize the guy too much for not getting Colt McCoy/Seneca Wallace and Chad Henne/Matt Moore ran offenses in the top 10. I’d rather take a guy who’s improved the team everywhere he’s been regardless of the talent there rather than take someone like a McDaniels or Philbin who basically got their next jobs off of the back of their elite Quarterbacks.
I like that perspective
He seems like a guy who says “ok this is what you have, then we can do this, this and this.”
As opposed to "THis is my system i need you to get these types of players and get rid of those types, then my plan will work.
Especially when the "type" needed for said system to work is a Kurt Warner-caliber QB

Not Sure
Voted disapprove last time as I am just not thrilled about the hire, which I am still not especially seeing that Miami players seem to be happy he’s gone. I will however see what he does as I have no choice in the matter.
I Google searched Daboll and Miami Herald, and was shocked to see several articles praising him for communication, creativity, passion, putting players in a position to succeed....
Now, he might’ve misused a guy or two throughout the season, or told someone their skills wouldn’t work against a certain “D”, and they didn’t like it.
It doesn’t seem like his players hate him, that’s for sure…old Herald articles make it seem like the opposite is true. So do Phin fans.
I dunno.

Feeling a little better about it.
Not that I was devastated or anything. Still will wait and see. The player acquisitions this off season will have far more implications than the Daboll hiring.

Positives:
- Good to great relationship with HC
- He wants to be in Kansas City
- Seemingly he has bought into what both RAC/Pioli are envisioning
- From the Beliskunk tree (yes, that’s a good thing)
- High energy
- Seemingly plays/gameplans to his players strengths
- Seemingly knows how to expose defenses
- Seemingly holds his players accountable
- Multiple former coaches/staff/players/fans are speaking highly of him
I was once fired from a job two days after I waited on Matt Cassel and his wife Lauren Killian. Totally my AP moment to remember. Unfortunately also one of my stupidest moments.
I wouldn't say TH was a high energy coach.
And we are only talking about our OC. Daboll gets to worry about the offense by himself.

Same as before, he’s still a Patriots croney hire, whose main job qualification (unless you count having his best offensive season be the 10th worst in the league), is that he is a former Patriot. In addition, we have now seen several instances where it’s documented that his former players have been glad to see him leave their respective cities, and it appears this is nothing more then another good old boy network hire. Hope I’m wrong, but nothing I’ve seen would suggest otherwise.
What players were/are glad to see him leave?
Not doubting you, I’m genuinely curious.

I don't know why anyone would change their vote just based on what the guy says at a press conference
I have to see action, not words. Talking about bringing in an attacking offense doesn’t do anything for me. I talk about how I could be a rock star but yet I still have an office job.

Over the last ten or twelve years the Patriots have been serious contenders.
Back when they were winning championships they happened to have a few guys that are now running our team. These are all guys that have multiple rings and know what it takes to win championships. Settle the QB position in KC and we are in good great hands.

Does it really make a shit whether or not
we, as the fans,. give a rats apple of approval?? The hire is done, whether we approve or not approve. I say, at this point, we should support the hire. He has done nothing with our team to prove that we should disapprove of this hire. The past is the past and the past is a entirely different situation in that he was with 2 other teams besides the Chiefs. I like what he did last year, but that was an entirely different set of players with different mentalities and athleticism. We shall see what goes on as time goes on. I think that regardless of what happens, true Chiefs fans will continue to love their team.
No, but what do you want to talk about in the mean time, if not approve/disapprove of Daboll.
No one is trying to claim that this poll, or any lack of fans’ approval will have any impact on the Chiefs’ decision making.

I guess they’re tying him to Wisenhunt since he was OC under him before he moved to HC.
They also put Mike McCarthy under Paul Hackett where others have him under Schottenheimer.

I'm really excited about this hire
I didn’t know much about Daboll and still don’t know all that much but he is YOUNG. Our staff currently was getting a little long in the tooth and Daboll will bring some much needed youth to the staff. He sounds like a coach that is willing to adapt to players he has and situations that come up from week to week which is what I was hoping for. Plus he should be able to stay awake the whole game which is always a plus
you're really excited about a guy you don't know all that much about?

I cannot say the same about an OC at the pro level.
The only measure of true success in the NFL is the Vince Lombardi trophy. Anything less is a rationalization.
The truth could be said about most OC out there
I know Al because he was here but I don’t do extensive research on the OC out there each year. I’m excited because he showed some promise last year with the dolphins and all great coaches were not always considered great. About time we got in on the ground floor with a coach.
"So RAC hasn't done shit in KC?"
Going by points, he had the #22 D last year and the #21 D this year. Not exactly lighting the world on fire. He did go 2-1 which blows away anything his Belichick coatriding peers has done.

How many sacks did Orton have on Aaron Rodgers?
Yes he moved the ball well between the 20’s but we also remarkably re-discovered the beauty of play action fake in that game, not too mention playing one of the wrost defenses.
Carpe Diem
So Orton
had absolutely no effect on the Chiefs winning the time of possession and yardage wars, keeping the ball out of Rodgers’ hands?
Yes he had an effect
In moving the ball between the 20’s and not getting us in the endzone and keeping us to below 20 pts against one of the worst defenses in the league.
He also had an effect the following week in throwing a pick right to a Raiders db in a game we scored all of 13 pts in against a defense that on average in 15 other gamea allowed an average of 28 pts per game.
He had an effect the following week against an overrated but opportunisitc Broncos defense and got all of 7 pts and once again our own defense rode to Kyle Ortons rescue just like the Broncos defense did the first 6 games of 2009.
Carpe Diem
I did answer your question "Yes he did"
You act like Kyle Orton alone could do what he did. I pointed out facts that what he did was far from unique or impressive and certainly not what the Chiefs should settle for if we want to end a 42+year skid.
Carpe Diem
lol the redzone is the toughest place and requires the most practice time and we had a qb who had very little practice time
How come we didnt run it in ? is that Ortons fault too ?
Under Matt we were getting to the redzone just over 2 times game
Under Palko that fell to under 1 time a game
With Orton we were getting to the redzone 3 times a game and that was with him only being here a few weeks and being able to practice less than that
What you are asking is for everyone to simply ignore basic football common sense ? We should ignore the timing issues that come with limited practice ?
Orton threw a pick against the raiders in the redzone after we ran the same play twice in a row but the first time the receiver dropped the td pass ?
Against the broncos Orton and the passing game to Bowe was looking great prior to Bowes injury now after he went down we shouldve kept trying to throw against one of the leagues best pass rushes ? despite the fact that there offense had been struggling and the difference in most of there games had been turnovers ? There is a certain thing called a game plan.
I dare you to go watch the video of Romeos post game lockerroom speech after that denver game and tell me how Orton had played poorly in it .

Bad QB’s (low ratings) are not accurate or consistant in throwing the ball. We’ve all seen this with cassell right? He gets lucky on a couple long balls over the course of the year but isnt likely to beat you with his arm when your down in double digit scores. A under rated QB allows the defense to pack 8 or 9 guys in the box which creates problems for your running game. So I would have to agree that a low rated QB can lose games.
I'm still sick about this hire
The only thing I learned about this guy is he’s going to start Cassell, which makes it even worse. Voted not approve both times.

listen to his interview
he spoke highly of cassell that doesnt mean cassell will get the start. i dont think pioli can except that cassell isnt the 2nd coming or that he was wrong in signing cassell to a long term contract. With cassell being under contract through 2014 I dont think pioli will bring in another money man (QB). Time will tell we’ll just have to wait and see
Daboll has to play who is on roster
Look at chain of command
Owner>GM>HC>OC, who knows he may have wanted to play Matt Moore from day one in Miami and crybaby McCoy from the start in Cleveland. Not like he can say “I want to play Drew Brees, peyton manning, hell anybody but Matt Cassel”.
Carpe Diem
maybe in Miami that's how it goes, but the org chart at 1 AH drive is a lil diff:
………………………GM——————————————————————
……………………../……..[[COMMENT_CHILDREN_TOKEN]]#8230;……………………………………………………\
………President……..Candywrapper…………………………………………..\
…………………………../……………..[[COMMENT_CHILDREN_TOKEN]]#8230;………………………………………….\
………………….Owner…………..Dallas Pioli…………………………………….\
…………………/………[[COMMENT_CHILDREN_TOKEN]]#8230;…………………………………………………………….\
Dwayne Bowe…….Back office workers younger than 30…………………………\
……………../……………………………………………………………………………….\
Scapegoat HC (RAC)……………………………………………………Any successful coach
……/
All failed coaches
I don’t think Daboll is going to have any say on whether or not he starts Cassel. Pioli will be one the who will be having him start Cassel. After all, can’t admit you are wrong.
agreed
hard to get excited about a six win season (miami) we won 7 as we were
wins and losses don't always correlate
to the success of an offensive or defensive coordinator.
Wins and losses good point
Bill Walsh 1st 2 yrs as 49ERS hc 2-14, 6-10
Mike McCarthy OC 2005 49ers 4-12, scored less than 250 pts
Marty Schottenheimer DC of the 1977 Giants 5-9 record, Schotty canned.
Carpe Diem
the only thing I know about him is this...
He better be a hit, or Pioli’s done.
did you hear RAC's interview
Rac said the hire of Daboll was 100% RAC’s decision lol DOES ANYONE OUT THERE BELIEVE THIS TO BE TRUE?
It depends on how you want to define that.
I do think he was RAC’s hire, but I’m sure Pioli had input and certainly veto power. In short, I think he was RAC’s choice, yes.
You're probably right...
although he could have been the only OC willing to go with Cassel…

Apparently Saunders wanted the job.
So did Zorn and I’m sure others. An NFL coordinator position is pretty coveted, and not one that most can be real picky about. Plus, I don’t think the rest of the NFL is near as down on Cassel as Chiefs fans are.
I was joking about Cassel.
I believe we can win with him, but it would be much easier with a next level qb. I think even Orton is a step up. Unfortunately, most fans don’t uderstand how hard it is to get that “elite” qb. There’s usually 28 other teams wanting to improve that position.

another way to look at it...
If every team had an elite QB they would all be average.

Many others.

His or not...
We can’t fire Hunt…or can we? Besides, they both come back to Pioli.
I still think cassell is our problem
we need a QB that can stretch the field keep those db’s honest and maybe Charles moves up to 7.4 per carry. Im not from KC so I get nothing local regarding the Chiefs. last I heard there was a 3 man competition between Charles, Berry and Moeaki anyone hear how they’re progress is going
The most realistic option to improve the QB position...
is to bring Orton back. Do whatever you need with Cassel. Trade him, keep him, whatever. Orton has proven he can move the ball and sustain drives. Day-bull would have a lot more to work with and could open up the playbook more (opposed to Cassel).
We don’t need a QB right now to set the world on fire. We need an offense that sustains drives, keeping the defense fresh and allowing KC to dictate the flow of the game. Manning or RG3 ain’t happenin’ folks. Orton is familiar with the organization and the most reasonable answer to upgrading the QB position. He has his faults, and he’s not Brees or Rodgers. But you can’t just go find one of those guys any old time.
I will be supremely disappointed if KC doesn’t make a major attempt to retain Orton.

Orton is not fixing the problem
Fixing it is A) seeign what Stanzi has B) Gettign another qb in the draft, not settlign for a guy who averaged 13 pts per game against bottom feeder defenses.
Carpe Diem
Didn't say it was 'fixing the problem'
I said it’s the most realistic option to improve the position.
Twitter: @RaiderHater86
How much should he had averaged in a couple practices ? lol
bottom feeder defense vs a guy who had limited practice and a dislocated finger on his throwing hand ? somehow we shouldve been averaging 30 ppg ?
Who are these magical td makers that we had ? Baldwin was the only proven td weapon we had available .
Breastons not a td guy neither is Baldwin ?

I think there's a direct correlation to those who approve and also think either Stanzi or Cassel are the answer at QB
Either way too optimistic, or delusional Time will tell
I approved, and I don't think those two are the answer.
Stanzi may be at some point, but who knows at this point. I don’t see it as a QB approval poll.
Stanzi may not be the answer
But I would rather see what he has than tolerate the Kyle Orton/Matt Cassel glass ceiling that has worked so well for us the last 40+years.
Carpe Diem
The thing is, YOU don't have to see what Stanzi has.
The coaches do. And they can see just fine in practice.
Stanzi might be one of those Jeff Garcias who look totally different in games than in practices, but those guys are the exception. I’ll hope for Stanzi to succeed, but if he doesn’t see the field then I’ll assume he’s sucking it up in practice.

if Stanzi sucks
The draft another qb but don’t settle for Matt Orton or Kyle Cassel.
Haley had a bad record here of not playing our best players. With no fofseason and no training camp Stanzi was set back. I can understand that once Romeo was auditioning for HC it was not a good tmr to have open tryouts at qb so he went with the veteran, I dont blame him for that. Long term though the Chiefs needed to find a good young qb or advertise “Season ticket holders we guarantee 7-9 with Makyle Ortassel”
Carpe Diem
I like Orton to come back,
but whether he does or not, I HOPE we don’t have this high of a draft pick again for a long while….so I agree, we need to do something with it to improve our chances of getting an elite QB, whether that’s drafting RG3 this year or trading it for a stockpile next year.

Kyle Orton
Will guarantee we are drafting 16th or earlier next draft, notice how well he did for the Bears and Broncos even when there defense played lights out? (the only way he can win).
Carpe Diem
Denver didn't have lights out defense their first five games this year.
When you gotta go in the lion's den, you don't go quiet. You go in loud, kick the door down and say WHERE IS THE SONUVABITCH. -B. Billick
You mean lights as opposed to what the broncos were doing normally which was giving up 30 ppg ? You do realize that during Ortons time there that defense gave up 30 ppg this lights out periods you talk about was simply holding teams to under 20 points
Check your facts!!!
I guess this also applies to Eli manning
http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/nyg/new-york-giants
There last 6 games the defense gave up
14
14
2 playoffs
20 playoffs
17 playoffs
17 SB
yep thats ppg by the Giants . Your theory is ridiculous
If its somehow a crutch in your mind for a QB to have there defense play lights out well then a whole bunch of Qbs are using that crutch
The pats were
10
20
then 19 + safety by on Brady
notice how well he did for the Bears and Broncos even when there defense played lights out? (the only way he can win).
so apparently this special way that Ortons wins is actually the way that most good teams win
by Willie Beamon on Feb 8, 2012 8:45 PM CST up reply actions
Denvers lights out defense
EXACTLY!!!! Kykle Ortons record then? 1-4!!!! Can it be any more obvious that Orton is not the answer!! Keep in mind our defense didn’t step it up a notch until after Cassel went down, not that far a leap to think Cassel doesn’t return similar even better eturn in the 3 Orton starts.
Carpe Diem
Romeo says that Daboll is the real deal.
My first impression was totally contrary to that assessment, but I am going to give Romeo the benefit of the doubt and not bitch until I see if this guy can pump up some offense. So I am very reluctantly approving subject to immediate withdrawal at such time as the offense scores less than 21 points.
