Only IF:

He finally makes the decision to upgrade the Quarterback position. He should get credit for overhauling the roster but that all goes for naught without the appropriate Leader under center. And his Wunderkid Cassel is not the guy!

by PhxChief75 on Feb 8, 2012 10:59 AM CST reply actions

Depends on what he does this offseason

If they let Carr and Bowe both walk and some impact FA aren’t signed then I would be willing to carry his bags to the airport to get him out of town. May also depend on the draft. He’s had two solid drafts in a row, if he has a third that can help but we can’t continue with the lack of depth we have and not spending any money.

Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.

by Fozzyboyd on Feb 8, 2012 10:59 AM CST reply actions

Was gonna say the same thing.

With the money we have there is no excuse to not bring back bowe and carr and bring in some other free agents.

by chiefFANatic on Feb 8, 2012 12:01 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Thats true about the money

If they are able to carry over the 20 mill that they didn’t use this year and the amount they are already under the cap then there is no reason not to sign those guys and others. Think of how much quality depth we can get for that money.

Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.

yeahBut... I think Clark is using that cap space to fund the stadium

renovations and his other sports franchises. Lamar was never cheap but neither was he prone to go hog-wild with the checkbook over guys who are free agents for more than one reason.

I think he gets one more contract to prove he can make us a perennial contender

No contract until he wins in the post season

Remember how well contract extensions worked for Peterson adn Schaaf with no post season success.

YES

If only for the opportunity to have some continuity. Damnit people, stop being so short sighted. We’ve had 2 GMs in 5 years, 3 Head Coaches, and 5 offensive coordinators. We’re not going to be able to build a damn thing if the revolving door on the front office doesn’t stop turning for awhile. Have some patience and ride it out.

by Chief Willie Wildcat on Feb 8, 2012 11:06 AM CST reply actions

Preach it Willie!!!

All Pioli has done since he got here is have the best drafts of all teams. When he got Cassel, Cassel was the hottest QB out there. Then last year (or two, depending how you count years) Cassel went down and we saw Brodie Croyle, everyone loved Matty then, but he’s shit now?

by Okie Red on Feb 8, 2012 12:09 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

People didn't "love" him...even after the Croyle debacle

Rather, people realized just how bad the KC QB situation was.

@Chief Willie... reply function not working

Don’t people bitch that we kept Carl around too long? At least he had winning teams and filled the stadium. I think Pioli gets two more years. If we’re still hanging around .500 he can go back to riding Belicjick’s coattails.

I think he and Romeo get 3 years

if things aren’t looking up by then, by all means, it’s time to make a switch, Still though, I’d love to be able to see what a staff can do together if they can remain intact for 5 years.

by Chief Willie Wildcat on Feb 8, 2012 11:47 AM CST up reply actions

Probably gets one more year regardless...

But Definitely needs to address the qb problem. We, the fans, are starting to get tired of the “patriot way”, and sticking with cassel will not win any more fans over.

by Jpocket on Feb 8, 2012 11:41 AM CST via mobile reply actions

NO.

IF, he sticks with Cassel throughout the whole season. Also, same goes with the HC.

by Mr.Pibbs on Feb 8, 2012 12:04 PM CST reply actions

yes

Pioli stays, IMHO

you can say “keep losing”… but, this is a team that made the playoffs last year, and was a blocked FG away from them again this year.

I think people should be excited about the direction the Chiefs are going, not talking about more turnover

by stagdsp on Feb 8, 2012 12:28 PM CST reply actions

That was my thought

In his first year as GM, the Chiefs won twice as many games as the previous year under Herm/Peterson. In his second year, the Chiefs won the division. In his third year, the Chiefs were in the hunt for a playoff spot right up until the end of the season. How is that a history of losing?

By no means am I saying he’s perfect. I am concerned about the shenanigans we keep hearing about when it comes to secrecy. He did have a falling out with Haley, who’s legacy in KC is an enigma (was he a coach that helped us win or a coach that mired the offense in mediocrity?). He hasn’t been able to bring in and retain a high quality OC, leading to our offensive woes. And his biggest failing so far is not bringing in a QB that could compete with/replace Cassel. There is no way we should have gone into this season (his third on the job) with Tyler-freaking-Palko as the #2 QB.

by Chiefs4Life on Feb 8, 2012 1:02 PM CST up reply actions

well, considering that the team was substantially under .500

in his first year, and 7-9 last year, the 10-6 playoff year looks to be the outlier.

And we don’t forget, the Chiefs sustained their second worst playoff loss at the end of the outlier. At home.

“won twice as many games as the previous year”

Thats a nice way to spin winning 4 games

You're right, it was

but it’s still true. The Chiefs got worse every year under the Herm/Peterson regime and rebounded under Pioli.

You don’t fire a GM after 4 years unless you are the Browns.

by CapsLockKey on Feb 8, 2012 1:16 PM CST reply actions

Put me in the "Pioli should get more time UNLESS we have another bad year with Matt Cassel as the starter" camp.

It’s time to start moving on from Cassel. He can be on the roster next year, but we need to start looking to sign or (ideally) draft his replacement.

If Pioli does neither of those things, that’s fine. It’s certainly his call. But he needs to understand he’s betting his job that Cassel will develop into a legit franchise QB in year 4.

Took a shot with Cassel, missed

If he didn’t take a shot, then fire him.

If an opportunity arises to replace Cassel, i.e. RG3 falls to our pick, and we don’t take him, fire him.

Outside of that, 4 years isn’t a big enough sample size for a GM

by RememberDelaney37 on Feb 8, 2012 1:35 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Chiefs were 7-9 this year

in the midst of controversy and injuries and a hair away from making the playoffs. Technically it was technically a losing season, but it was hardly a normal one. Now if the Chiefs go 4-12 or worse, yeah Pioli should start feeling the heat, but you have to give a guy at least 5+ years as a GM, especially after taking over a team that won a whopping 2 games the previous year. Needs some time to at least see his players develop.

Name me one team that fired a GM after only 4 years that suddenly became a successful franchise. Be one thing if Pioli was bombing picks left and right like Matt Millen, but the last couple of drafts have been pretty good. The only two shortcomings I give the guy right now is his first QB and coach. He’s attempted to fix one of those already, now let’s see if he fixes the other.

by CapsLockKey on Feb 8, 2012 3:37 PM CST up reply actions

How is this aspect continually overlooked here?

This is an entire blog of some of the smartest fans in the league, yet when it comes to Pioli and Cassel, we act like some of the dumbest.

Pioli attempted to get a franchise QB. To hold that against him asinine. He has no one on the roster currently to legitimately replace him as the starter. He has absolutely ZERO control on if any free agent QB comes here; all that can be done is offer contracts. He has absolutely ZERO control on the draft to get a QB; all he can do is make trade offers that won’t sap the team of what he values: developing draft picks.
What frustrates me about this is that some fans believe that if some trade or signing didn’t happen, it absolutely and unequivocally means that Pioli didn’t try, he’s “married” to Cassel, that Pioli is an idiot who wants to have mediocre QB play because he doesn’t want to admit a mistake in trading for Cassel. We should be the first to know that we aren’t going to hear about everything that goes on behind the scenes, what offers are made and rejected.

We are too smart of fans to want to overpay for a player or trade, then crucify Pioli when we are over the cap or don’t have any draft picks. Ridiculous

I'm so overrated, I'm underrated.

You know, the list of every coach, free agent, trade, and draft pick the team tried to get and failed? Every team puts one out, didn’t you know?

I'm not challenged by simple english

so let me say this simply

your question is ridiculous. He had a chance to sign him after he was released and didn’t. He waited until Cassel was hurt. Unless you are possessed of knowledge that tells me he was waiting to sign him prior to that, the facts speak for themselves.

I'm thinking you should check your facts

Orton was released on Nov. 21st. He was claimed by us on, wait for it….. Nov. 22nd.

What “chance to sign him” prior to that do you speak of exactly???

Well stated

But there will be some who won’t buy in just because there hasn’t been a post season win or a big name coach or QB hired.

by Jazzfan on Feb 8, 2012 3:59 PM CST up reply actions

Yep

for some reason people have this idea stuck in their heads that Pioli is just sitting on his ass watching franchise QBs pass in front of him left and right and he is refusing to grab one of them cuz he is married to Cassel. They dont seem to realize the fact that since he got here, Pioli has signed the two best QBs that were available to us

by badassz1987 on Feb 8, 2012 7:40 PM CST up reply actions

This is not even a question in my mind...

He has had solid drafting since he got here, good player management and feeling things out without getting too aggressive. Had we not had the injuries we had, we would be talking about another year as teh Executite of the Year candidate.

You cannot just “address the QB” whenever you feel like it, there are costs associated with it. Since he arrived, there really have not been many QB’s available for us to get anyway.

by Skrappy on Feb 8, 2012 2:38 PM CST reply actions

You stop that with that reasoning crap!

We need to have rash judgments, spew vitriol and post stupid pictures of Pioli and Cassel together or we just aren’t doing our duties as fans

yeah, his first draft was just hell on wheels

by sm7600 on Feb 8, 2012 3:38 PM CST up reply actions

that entire draft was hell on wheels.

There were a few diamonds like Orakpo and Matthews, but for the most part that draft was full of crap rounds 1 through 7. How soon we forget that he also didn’t have his scouting staff in place yet and had to rely on Peterson’s holdover crew that season.

by CapsLockKey on Feb 8, 2012 3:40 PM CST up reply actions

who's fault is that?

that almost sounds like he was mailing that draft in from the get go

by sm7600 on Feb 8, 2012 3:55 PM CST up reply actions

Clark Hunt's

For waiting so long to get him hired. Some teams had their coaches already in place before Pioli was brought in.

by CapsLockKey on Feb 8, 2012 4:22 PM CST up reply actions

The 2009 Draft is already ranked as one of the worst in NFL History

The fact that we have any Starters, makes is pretty good for PIoli. Half of the 1st round from that draft is either out of the NFL or not on the same team that drafted them. It sucked!!!

by Skrappy on Feb 8, 2012 11:19 PM CST up reply actions

No contract extension without a post season win

at a minimum.

The continuity argument is overrated. 1976-2008 we only had two GM’s, raise your hand if your happy with the results.

If we see another wheels off campaign without trying a rookie/2nd yr qb then goodbye. No more spares like Cassel/Orton. We can find any of 22 gm’s of the street to sign Cassel/Orton and go 7-9/4-12.

Carpe Diem

by TEXAN_CHIEF on Feb 8, 2012 2:59 PM CST reply actions

Here is my take(for what it's worth)!

Pioli spins that he will continue to “build through the draft!” We already know that he has given up a high second round pick and a huge contract for a QB that still has tons of questions. The Patriots used that pick for a player(#25/Patrick Chung) who helped them to a Superbowl in only his third season. I see the value of what we MIGHT have had using that second rounder AND the $60 + Million as a couple of reasons we had depth issues. That combination could easily be broken into 3-4 quality players and better depth. In my view, we(Scotty Boy) SHOULD be looking for a trade partner looking for a back-up QB and look to get a pick(or player) in exchange for Cassel. THEN we go all in for the number 2 pick OR find the right answer for Peyton Manning IF healthy. Matt had his shot and has not demonstrated what is neccesary to make us better solely based on his own ability. I believe that if Daboll is going to spend extra time teaching and training Matt that his time would be better served with a QB with more natural abilities and instincts!
IMHO OF COURSE!!!

WAR Kansas City Chiefs KINGDOM!!!
