Where did the running game go?

Teams used to find their way into the playoffs with a sturdy run game, maybe a power back with a nice speady running back to complement him. Now that I mention it, this is the strategy the Chiefs used last year, and the year before that, and the year before that. Well have you noticed how frustrated the fans are getting. We want a Championship. The Chiefs have always been a run heavy team. Thats just the way its been. Well my friends this league is turning away from those run heavy teams and now open a new dimension, passing teams with miss-matches, tight ends, h-backs, speedy receivers and so on. The Chiefs need to jump on the bandwagon.

Star-divide

Last year, the top five teams in rushing were:

1) Denver Broncos

2) Houston Texans

3) Carolina Panthers

4) Minnesota Vikings

5) Philadelphia Eagles

Now, for the combined record of the league leaders in rushing the teams totaled up to a (35-45) record. That is very bad considering these teams were elite in the run game. Not only did only 2 of these five make it to the playoffs, but none of them even made it past the divisional round.

The top five in passing:

1) New Orleans Saints

2) New England Patriots

3) Green Bay Packers

4) Detroit Lions

5) New York Giants

Notice that all of these teams made it to the playoffs, 3 of them made it to the Championship games, 2 made it to the Super Bowl, and ahhh... our Super Bowl winner. So, we see that this league is turning toward a passing league. The grand total of the combined records of these teams is (60-20). That is a huge leap.

Defense still matters:

1) Pittsburgh Steelers

2) Houston Texans

3) Baltimore Ravens

4) San Francisco 49ers

5) New York Jets

Although these teams did not make it to the Super Bowl, it shows you that a good defensive team can take you far, but a passing team can win a Championship. So I guess the quote, "Offense sells tickets, defense wins Championships," isn't true after all.

What it means for the Chiefs: Sorry Ups, I don't think the Chiefs should draft David DeCastro, after all. I don't doubt that he will be a great guard at this level, but the money and draft picks need to be spent on getting a Franchise quarterback. I think the Chiefs have a solid defense with Berry coming back and Tamba and DJ coming off pro bowl seasons, maybe enough to sneak in the top 5 in the NFL. In addition, I think the Chiefs running game with Charles coming back and possibly a nice compliment RB for him can be a top 5 team. Finally, IMO the most important key, the passing game, the Chiefs have 3 above average WR's with a nice weapon in Dexter McCluster that if we get the quarterback needed to succeed we could be a top five team. So, I think it is worth the Chiefs trading up for RGIII.

All I know is and care about right now...

Get DeCastro. I don’t care if Tyler Palko is in the backfield, if he gets 7 seconds in the pocket and can step up into the pocket because of an elite interior line, even he will make completions.
Frankly, I could care less about passing. I think that passing the football is not how football is meant to be played and I never, ever will. I know it’s a rapidly changing league we will have to pass to be successful, but if it was up to me the only reason teams would even have a quarterback would be to hand the ball off.
Sorry, just sorta got off topic. But it sorta grinds my gears when people say that we don’t draft an O-lineman in the first round. I don’t really care if it’s Reiff or Martin either, but it’s not a question for me that that’s easily the most important thing right now. Cassel has elite games when his line is playing well. The Indy game for example. If he can get in a rhythm with his receivers and clean. Palko even can do not pathetic when the line gives him some time. Orton picked apart the Packers (who have a very good secondary) not really because he was playing 10x better than Cassel but because he was getting 7 seconds in the pocket.
Take a look at the top 5 passing teams, will you? All of them have Top 10 O-lines, and they all have Top 6 interiors. Elite quarterbacks have a shit load of help from EVERYONE. Watch any Saints game from the past 3 years. Drew Brees literally can stand in the pocket for like 10 seconds, waiting for someone to get open. In 2008 Cassel was making teams look like children because he had the most clean pocket in the history of the world.
Kansas City’s got the elite receiving core, an elite group of RB’s (Jamaal for speed, McClain for blocking/short yardage, and Battle or a FA/Rookie for power), and a good QB (Orton), QB isn’t a dire need right now. If we can get DeCastro, we’ll have the elite interior QB’s pray for, or we can get Martin then grab Nicks or Grubbs in the free agency an have a great line, too. This not only makes the passing game effective, it strengthens the running game significantly and makes our offense more balanced. The defense, when in a good groove is about the best in the league. Why waste 4 draft picks on a QB who could potentially be good when we already have a QB and could draft a guard who could be the next big thing?

well, it’s not up to you and if this team doesn’t change with the times were screwed

I have done just that and Brees makes his o-line look like a million dollars. He has 1 of the quickest releases in football and his eyes are always down field .And he doesn’t have guards taken at number 11 on his line. Cassel is not a franchise QB and you are fooling yourself if you think so. It’s a passing league now , the 3 yards and a cloud of dust days are dead my friend. Time to let go of 1985

True, and he never gets any sacks.

And I know I need to let go of the past.
Obviously Drew Brees would be just fine and dandy without an elite O-line, but it sure does help.

Well, I agree with where you are coming but

DeCastro would never be drafted to score touchdowns. He would be asked to come to this team and help create touchdowns. Like I said, I don’t doubt that DeCastro would be great, but I think if we got RGIII we would create more touchdowns

damn, Drew ... I spent like ALL DAY explaining (or trying) to explain to Texas "Our Lovable Village Idiot" Chief that defense does, indeed, win championships

and he finally spent a whole 3 minutes researching his homework assignment and came up with this most awesome and almost intelligible post

and thank you, NN! seriously, Drew, did you not watch the Saints at all this year? did you not see Drew Brees with enough time to read War And Peace and THEN throw the ball? by the way, did you check out that Saints-Lions game where Thomas was blowing past the feared Detroit defensive line that was being eaten alive by the Saints offensive line?

do you not remember Willie and Will, Roaf and Shields? does Priest Holmes not ring a bell? how about Peyton Manning having time to find any WR he wants? seriously, if we can get Soliai in Free Agency our defense is pretty much killer set to go … yes, Drew, defense wins games AND championships … and yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus

I love how people rant about Orton with the tired cliche “you want to settle for mediocrity!” while DEMANDING that the Chiefs take 2nd 3rd and 5th round picks for the guys who protect the QB and open holes for the running backs “yes, let’s wait til the BEST ones are ALL GONE!” as if that ISN’T settling for mediocrity

listen to your elders, Drew … we are wise beyond our years (and we’re plenty old, too!)

Hey ups like I said...

I don’t doubt that a great defense will do great things for your team, but I just don’t see a dominant defense winning 4 Championships. I think they are very capable of winning one or two though

Steel Curtain anyone?

I know … different day and age, QB’s rule, etc … I’d love to have us a KILLER running game, and I think we can have just that, but it takes a killer good OLine … we’re only a couple of pieces away, I think

fingers crosses: the right off-season moves, the right draft, a little luck on our side … 2012 could be a VERY good year

QB's make O-Lines look great

O-Lines make QB’s look great.

Which one is most realistic with us sitting at 11/12 in the draft? I’d take Decastro or whatever OT you like any day. However, if I were to see a trade for a franchise QB with 3 picks or less…I wouldn’t complain too bad.

Big Gulps EH????? All right.....Welp....See Ya Later!

BTW, Drew, great post.

I may not agree with all of it, but it was very well done and you did your research. Always good to see a post like that over a 60 word block of text about someone’s draft thoughts when it should just be a comment in a thread.

And hopefully will come back fit as a fiddle….

Balance.

This is a really good point you bring up, but I think there has to be balance. Run games and defense will get you to the playoffs, but you really need a good passing game to progress.

I have no doubt that a healthy Jamaal Charles all year would have gotten us a playoff berth. Unfortunately the results would be similar as 2010: our run game gets shut down by a playoff caliber defense, and our QB can’t do anything productive.

"saints_chiefsfan1979 is a genius" - yes, I lost a bet.
