Scott Pioli drafts?
But starting in 2006, things haven't gone well for the Patriots. The secondary was obviously a major weakness of New England's this season, but in the last six drafts, Belichick has spent 10 draft picks on defensive backs. With Devin McCourty suffering from a sophomore slump and Patrick Chung spending most of the season injured, New England did not get significant contribution from any of those 10 players this season.
The Patriots deserve credit for the two tight ends drafted in 2010. Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski have proven to be huge weapons for that offense. If Devin McCourty can get back on track, which is a big if, than the 2010 draft class has a chance to be a success. Three significant contributors would warrant that label.
2009 was a disaster. The team hit with Patrick Chung, but missed on just about every other pick. Meanwhile, Jerod Mayo was the only decent player to come out of the 2008 draft, and Stephen Gostkowski was the only useful asset to come out of either the 2006 or 2007 draft.
That's not missing on a few picks or having an off year, that is absolutely terrible drafting.

what are you trying to say here, Steve?

well, supposedly he wasn’t GM but was in some other capacity so nothing “bad” could possibly have been Scott’s fault, right?

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Not sure what you are saying here, Steve
Since Pioli left New England, they haven’t had good drafts?
I'm so overrated, I'm underrated.

He points out that the Patriots did not have good drafts Pioli's last three drafts there.
2 players in three drafts
Yep Billy boy has been turrible at drafting for a few years now
Its his own damn fault, all he does is trade back when he has plenty of ammo to move up and grab a bluechip player.
Sorta reminds me of the Colts, they havent drafed well in years and it showed once Manning got hurt.
Me and Matt Cassel just - you up, dog!
Jackson, Berry, and Houston
Arenas, Lewis, and Moeaki all suggest that Pioli is getting out of the rut :)
let's hope so! :-)

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Don't forget Asamoah
Hudson showed some signs as well and Bailey was starting to come on late. McCluster’s a nice piece of the puzzle too, if they ever figure out how to use him properly.
the last 2 drafts were really good
his first here was bad but it was a bad year. TJax is looking better too
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
Yes we have two excellent drafts
and still had a losing record
Depth is needed or is it the right starters added.
I am of the thought that the Chiefs are going to attempt to get RGIII.
DaBoll can handle young QB’s and we will build the NEW Chiefs offense around a NEW QB
I hope
curious, Steve ... your thoughts on Orton?

To be fair
When you’re a mostly established team, most of your draft picks likely aren’t going to make the team. It’s still not good to miss on that many picks, but there’s generally going to be less room on the roster of a team that’s already built as opposed to a rebuilding one.
Excellent point bh
Might I suggest that a backup ILB, and Offensive Guard, maybe a safety are all secondary needs when we have a hole at QB?
bh .. that's quite an assumption, I realize when you're picking 26-32 range every year you don't often get "the best of the best" but still ... that little talent in all the rounds put together for 2-3 years is very low

He does have a point
The Patriots have starters at most every spot, it is hard to judge who might wear out, get injured to draft adequate backups at every position.
Pioli failed at 3rd string safety and 2nd string QB last year, other than that we were great (sorta)
definitely at backup QB
ah well, like Cubs fans we have a new season coming up, a new beginning, another chance at the World Series
or something

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Belichick would have been better served to package all those picks and target
3 or 4 starting calibre players than attempting to select depth.
Let your former starters become the depth with stud starters
yeah, like we could let Lilja be depth when we draft DeCastro (huge grin)

He has done a good job drafting here
but I get the feeling drafts can be put all on BB in New England. I think he has the final say on anything and everything.
A good case in point would be when he wanted Maroney and Chad Jackson and he was warned that these guys weren’t the right guys, and he took them anyways.
One of the “warners”? Our very own Brian Daboll
Yes
he openly spoke out about both picks being dangerous. I found it in War Room the other day. I was skimming through to find Daboll mentions.
Did the same thing
The Chad Jackson story is pretty good for Daboll, IMO.
It’s hard to know exactly how to read the McDaniels/Mangini stuff for Daboll…he doesn’t look super great as it’s presented in War Room.
Still, I’ve warmed up to Daboll too, and I’m excited to see how he works with our offensive players.
sounds like Daboll is a Pioli hire more than a Crennell hire
or at least as much Pioli as Crennell

If you read "War Room"...
it details how Belichick really went out on his own during Pioli’s last few drafts there. Pioli was said to be particularly against drafting Laurence Maroney and Chad Jackson, two notable busts from the 2006 draft.
And that’s as much as Patriots book as anything, so it’s not like they’re trying to make Pioli look good or Belichick look bad. It’s just the facts.
Yep
Belichick “went rogue,” going against the better judgement of Pioli, the coaching staff, and the scouts. If anything, I would see it as a learning experience for Pioli on trusting the scouting system you’ve put in place.
War Room is a great read too…feel like I learned a ton about these franchises.
