Chiefs Make It Official: Brian Daboll Is The New OC
The Kansas City Chiefs have made it official: Brian Daboll is the new offensive coordinator.
Reports came out over the weekend that the Chiefs were hiring Daboll and the team had a statement on their website that confirmed they were "in discussions" with Daboll.
Now, via a tweet from @kcchiefs, the Chiefs have confirmed Daboll is the new OC.
We've already been talking about this move for a few days so here are a few highlights of what we've had:

It does come down to a trust issue. I trust when Crennel says he’s picking his guys that it’s the truth.
Although I certainly believe Pioli has “veto” power, I do think it was Crennel’s call to bring in Daboll.
My guess is that getting totally demolished by Daboll when they went head to head helped with the decision.

Not sure I agree with this. Both worked together on the Pats for 2 seasons, about 8 years ago
Romeo worked with Zorn for one season last year, which to me sounds more relevant that a DC working with an at the time WR coach back in 2001

Adios Jim Zorn.
you were a temp anyway, cuz you got no patriot ties.
I don't think he said he was staying,
just that reports saying that he would leave if the didn’t get the job were not true.
awesome, we keep our QB coach!
now all we need is a QB :-)

It's "official" now? Damn. I was still holding out hope of it being a wild rumor.
My earliest Chiefs memories are watching guys named Dawson, Podolak, Taylor, Thomas, Bell, and Buchanan. So, yeah...I'm kind of an old fart.
Can't be any worse
And really what hiring would’ve made AP happy beyong a 20% approval rating besides Saunders who has one foot in the grave.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
agreed
and I can’t name another good candidate… except Saunders, who is old and under contract in Oak
The only I can think of is Hue Jackson
And its not like teams are banging down his door to get him hired so there’s got to be something more to that story.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
Apparently a lot of "arrogance" talk...
Although I still would’ve liked the hire.

Great point
and I think that he could be that guy. Still, I’d rather get Manning (his willingness to re-structure his contract with zero guaranteed dollars up front is really enticing) and find a true QBotF in the draft.
In accordance with the prophecy
From everything I've read
Weeden would be considered a franchise QB if it wasn’t for the age.

Fair enough.
What candidate out there other the Daboll, who you have been comfortable with “approving” or knowing that the offense would get better? You don’t have to answer but if you start looking at who’s available and actually even look at the guys in this league that have OC positions already and there’s no one that really jumps off the page.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
What does it matter if people approve or not?
Let the guy prove his worth. In the mean time some will belly-ache and some will “warm up” to it. :)

Meh.
If they don’t think it’s working, there’s no point to giving an OC more time to prove themselves. Fire him and move on, keep looking for one that fits.

Usually takes moe than 1 year to put a system in place though

Maybe to have it running at 100%...
But the people in charge should be able to see the progress the OC is making, judge his coaching methods, see the way the players react, etc.
If they don’t like the progress being made, why wait to make a change? Jamaal isn’t going to stay young forever.
"saints_chiefsfan1979 is a genius" - yes, I lost a bet.
You mean progress like...

I would say Moore is better than Cassel or at least equal to
Men succeed when they realize that their failures are the preparation for their victories.
Hammerfisting my own balls since 2006
Technically.. you could argue
that the Chiefs and Dolphins look pretty similar.. Bush=Charles, Marshall=Bowe, Bess=McCluster, Fasano=Pope/Moeaki (Moeaki is always hurt), Matt Moore= Cassel, The only difference is that they have a better 2nd running back..
"It's still real to me dammit!"
WOAHHHH
Im not saying hes as good as.. im saying they look similar.. hes a speedy back that can catch balls out of the backfield. You put them head to head, your damn right Charles wins.. The rest of them would be pretty equal in talent though
"It's still real to me dammit!"
Bush= Charles?
Dude just had his first 1000 yard season. Not even close. He was completely written off as a real RB, which is why he was shipped out of NO.
I’ll give you Marshall.
McCluster had more than 150% the offensive production of Bess, and played a different position. The correct comparison would be Breaston, who is better than Bess
Thomas would be correctly compared to Dex. So let’s look
Dex- 587 yards on 132 carries (4.4), 328 yards REC, 3 TD total
Thomas- 581 yards on 165 (3.5), 72 yards REC, 1 TD total
PLUS, Dex was a ST contributor.
So Dex > Thomas in pretty much every way you can measure.
I’ll allow us to call Fasano a push, and Moore
So So they get a “push” in 3 places (and that’s factoring in Moeaki being hurt) and are worse than us with the other 3 places mentioned.
Again, this is not a team with many weapons.
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
I am the Master of Hyperenthetical Asiditry (you know, like this. Only more)
If Moeaki is alwas hurt,
then so is Berry and Charles?
"saints_chiefsfan1979 is a genius" - yes, I lost a bet.
This isnt Moeaki first injury
In fact the big problem with him oput of college was that he couldnt stay healthy there either. I dont know how many games hes played in as a pro- can someone look this up? Hes been in the league what 3-4 years now?
"It's still real to me dammit!"
Last year was his rookie year
and he missed 1 game with a concussion
Men succeed when they realize that their failures are the preparation for their victories.
Hammerfisting my own balls since 2006
Thanks..
Cant look it up because work has about every website on lockdown.. Except for AP :) Alright so he has a concussion and he blew out a knee. maybe not as bad as i was making it out.. but he hasnt shows he can stay healthy for an entire year.
"It's still real to me dammit!"
LOL..
He’s been in the NFL for 2 years. Played 15 games his rookie year (2010) and missed this season due to a freak plague of ACL tears that shook the NFL this year (thanks lockout).
Yeah, he missed some college games, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Plenty of players have had injury issues in college and went on to be successful NFL players. Off the top of my head, Priest Holmes and Adrian Peterson come to mind.
"saints_chiefsfan1979 is a genius" - yes, I lost a bet.
How so?
Just curious of your oppinion.. In my mind. Dexter McCluster is no where near as good as the majority of Chiefs fans think he is.. And you dont think that Fasano is better than Moeaki? What has Moeaki done since hes been here?
"It's still real to me dammit!"

I just got NFL rewind back and am about to start my “breaking down” series again.
I’m going to start with T-Jax for sure. But I may skip Gregg (as he’s a FA) and go right into offensive players. Maybe Dex would be a good place to start?

him and Breaston were silent contributors all season…

Charter Member of Chief Fans for Neck Beards...Viva La Orton
Breaston was a God-send
The coaches need to look at some old game film of Marshall Faulk and LT and think a little harder about how to play Dex. Wasting a second round pick on a guy like that and then playing him the way they have has been a real bummer to watch.
Braccae illae virides cum subucula rosea et tunica Caledonia-quam elenganter concinnatur!
Dex has the same problem as T-Jax.
He’s being judged based on where he was drafted, rather than what he’s doing on the field.
Exactly
I intend on addressing that argument at some point.
At a certain point what matters is whether a player produces.

But also.. We all know that McCluster was drafted to play the slot.. not to carry the football, Yeah they might use him in the backfield.. but he cant take the pounding that a normal running back can.. Hes Dante Hall without juke moves

I don't think Dex is underrated per se
I think he’s a bit overrated but it’s not his fault. It’s purely because of the way he’s been used thus far.
If they start tossing screen passes to him and then you’ll see him earn all kinds of praise. If DoughBall can do things like this on a regular basis I’ll shut the hell up about him and hop on board.

At some point our “stud” TE is gonna get cut because he cant stay healthy..
"It's still real to me dammit!"
Calm down, this was his SECOND season. There’s plenty of players who’ve gone down with season ending injuries and have come back. I just think it’s a little too soon to even talk about getting cut…
Who else do we have at TE besides him that can catch worth a damn anyways?
Oh im calm dammit...
You calm down!!! IM A PEOPLE PERSON! IM GOOD AT DEALING WITH PEOPLE!! No but really, your right.. we dont have anyone else.. but if we draft a TE this year.. you can say bye to Tony.
"It's still real to me dammit!"
I for one would be totally pissed if they cut Tony because of an ACL tear.
Are we gonna cut Berry and Jamaal too, because they “can’t stay healthy”?
"saints_chiefsfan1979 is a genius" - yes, I lost a bet.
You have to get rid of Bowe too
since he didn’t finish the Denver game

Hammerfisting my own balls since 2006
I think your missing the fact..
That isnt some freak occurence or run of bad luck.. the guy is notorious for getting hurt and, so far, he hasnt shown different in the NFL. I dont think they will cut the guy based on the last two years.. but you have to admit that if they draft a TE in this years draft.. Its not looking good for him.
"It's still real to me dammit!"
A torn ACL doesn't mean the end of a career anymore
Brady returned from his just fine

And hopefully the best man wins the spot regardless of what his name or jersey number read.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
That would require Pioli to NOT be the GM
His dick is so far up #7’s ass you can’t tell where one stops and the other begins.

Still sugar coating your opinions I see, SC.
Come on, dude … just say you’re truly thinking. It ain’t hard.

I know man, sorry.
I really need to learn how to just open up and spill my guts. I’ll work on that.

de-rec'd for untruthfulness
if he stays with #7 this year, i’ll listen to your argument, but it’s too early to tell that will be the case. 3 years is long enough to know if someone is going to be good or not, but not long to show that Pioli is too stubborn to move on. i would have stayed with cassel up until this point if i where in his shoes. now that cassel has had 3 years, and hasn’t proven that he can carry the team to the promise land, it’s time to move on.
Seriously, when have I ever been sarcastic?
"untruthfulness" eh?
What makes your opinion of something yet to occur more truthful than anyone else’s? At this point ANY opinion of something in the FUTURE is an assumption or prognostication. Nothing about ANY of those things are true or otherwise.
In accordance with the prophecy
i never said my opinion is more truthful
my point was that there is no proof that pioli has his dick up cassel’s ass. i only used the untruthfulness comment because you already received a rec for truthfulness, when in fact your comment has no facts that might make it true. it was more a jab at other commenters, commenting on your comment, then your comment itself. your entitled to think pioli has a 16 incher up cassel’s pearly white buttocks; i just don’t see any proof that would make me agree.
Seriously, when have I ever been sarcastic?
Unless, of course, the fact that #7 is still considered "QBotF" by brass
isn’t proof enough. Again, that is speculation, but we’ve yet to see anything to the contrary, so it is something we can run with.
In accordance with the prophecy
Not sure about this move.
Will wait and see.
"saints_chiefsfan1979 is a genius" - yes, I lost a bet.
Here is the problem I have.
All of our weapons will be back on the field offensively next year.
I believe we will have a great offense.
the problem is, is that Daboll will get all the credit for it and in a few years when we lose some guys the front office will stick with a subpar coordinator because we had a couple great years with great talent in spite of a so-so coach in Daboll.
"Chiefs will...crush our enemies, see them drivin before us and hear the lamentation of the women."
He's only been a OC for 3 years.
Who’s to say he won’t grow into the position and actually become a good OC?
"saints_chiefsfan1979 is a genius" - yes, I lost a bet.
Because we don't believe in reason.

Jamaal above all. #25 ftw.
CHIEFS WILL!
You caught on very well.

CHIEFS WILL!
that's not reason
its faith
The only measure of true success in the NFL is the Vince Lombardi trophy. Anything less is a rationalization.
As long as I don't get the vibe of the Chiefs running on damn near every first down
And running a draw play on 3rd and long 95% of the time, I will give this man credit for better play calling
"saints_chiefsfan1979 is a genius" - yes, I lost a bet.
Throw in using Dex as a RB more and a gadget player yes
And throwing at least 6 quick slants to Bowe per game.
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
I am the Master of Hyperenthetical Asiditry (you know, like this. Only more)
there are somethings I agree with...
He hasn’t worked around much talent, so its possible that with talent he may be able to do more. But his offense isn’t all that great.
Maybe he will maybe he wont, Just havent seen very much to like this guy right now.
With that said, I hope in three years I look back on Daboll and eat my own words for doubting.
"Chiefs will...crush our enemies, see them drivin before us and hear the lamentation of the women."

Were all successful coaches immediately successful? Did some struggle and receive large amounts of criticism before being regarded as a good coach? This dude is young and could end up being a great hire. He could suck it up for a year and get canned. No one knows.
Fire Scott Pioli + hire Captain Hindsight = Superbowl.

You're absolutely correct
And I hope like hell that the best possible outcome is exactly what we get. My complaint the last few days, and a complaint shared by many others around here is that we have a team that is really close to winning now. This hire, with his track record is uninspiring at best. I would have felt much better with a coach who has a much better track record because this gives me the feeling that we’re continuing to experiment when we’re already in a place where our young players first contracts need to be renewed. Many of these guys aren’t just young pups anymore. They’re in the prime of their careers and it stinks to think that we’re still trying to rebuild. To that end, I think those of us who feel this way have a valid point.

you do
i , myself, still don’t know what to think of this hire, but i share your concerns. it would have been nice to have that sexy, known commodity hire, but i’m upset either, as he has shown some promise. regardless, i’ll stay firmly on the, not sure bench, until after the first game of the season. then i’ll make an overly rash, snap judgment.
Seriously, when have I ever been sarcastic?
debateable.
they definitely have a more extensive resume, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are better.
Seriously, when have I ever been sarcastic?
i'm willing to give the guy a fair shake...
could be just what we need…time will tell…
First of all, you throwin' too many big words at me, and because I don't understand them, I'm gonna take 'em as disrespect...

Im trying to reserve judgement here..
I want to see what offense he implaments (sp?). What kind of Offense did he run in Miami? IMO i think we have the skill set for just about any offense he wants to run, we just lack a QB..
"It's still real to me dammit!"
Good stuff
I don’t see Pioli ever allowing #7 to not be the guy. Any incoming OC is screwed.

Unfortunately
I think i have a better shot at OC than Todd Haley.. I run a tight ship in madden.
"It's still real to me dammit!"
I'm new here
and I certainly don’t know as much as guys like Matt and SCKS, but I do know what I saw. I saw a Baboll offense leave cleat marks up and down the backs of, what some here consider to be on the cusp of elite defense of ours. How about we wait and see what he can do with the unused weaponry we already have here.
Its cool dude,,
I dont claim to know much.. Just have strong oppinions. I said i was gonna reserve judgement to see how he goes through camp and to see some of the moves (trades-player signings-etc.) before i go off the deepend about him.. Like i said (very poorly) above he has alot of the same types of weapons that he did in Miami. Obviously more talented on our end… but Id expect to see the same offense they ran..
"It's still real to me dammit!"
You speak the truth
One also needs to take into account the complete lack of 2/3 of the game in KC at that point in the season. Chiefs had zero offense and less than zero special teams. There was essentially no scoring, nor was there a threat for KC to score. Ergo the defense got brutalized.
Still, it is very true that Daboll comes from a culture of losing (Cleveland and Miami) which is never a good thing.
In accordance with the prophecy
OMG
Daboll over Saunders? Really?
Daboll’s Offenses while he was OC were ranked 32nd, 29th and 22nd in the frigg’n league. I don’t give 2 and a half shits what ties he has, or if he destroyed the Chiefs last season. We have a less than mediocre QB and now a less than mediocre OC. How the hell can that equate to anything more than a mediocre offense?
What a wasted opportunity to make a good hire.
Dear Santa, All I want for Christmas is a NEW OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR!!!
Ummm....
Isn’t this the same guy that took a pretty bad offense in Miami and came to ARROWHEAD and kicked the shit out of us 30-3? <—- SARCASM, He obviously has something to give or we wouldn’t of hired him.
And Jackie Battle Gargles On The Sweet Nectar Of The Endzone!! TOUCHDOWN KANSAS CITY!!!

Yeah. He's the cheapest option.
And yes. He was the guy that brought a “bad offense” to Arrowhead. I don’t give a crap what the score was. He was responsible for the “bad offense” in Miami. Why the hell didn’t we find a guy that can create a top 10 offense? Not one in the bottom 5 range.

This is a sad day for me
Watching the superbowl and knowing i’m never going to see my Chiefs in it. I was really happy with the Crennel hire but now,not so much because of Daboll. Pioli says"I have to do a better job" are you kidding me? I had to suffer through this last year where the offense was pathetic, and don’t tell me injuries because they sure as heck could have put Stanzi in and gave him a shot. This new OC best season rankings was 22nd wow what a guy and I could care less if the Dolphins had a good second half of the season, maybe if they would have had a playoff run and a top 15 offense it would be a different story. Bacically i’m saying don’t get your hopes up about this upcoming season. I’m not saying the guy can’t do it but I expected a heck of a lot more when they fired Hayley. I’ve been a fan for so long i’m just getting sick and tired of this team not tring to become dominant. I want to see the Chiefs in the superbowl and I want to see it now.
