Did The Giants Run Buddy Ryan's 'Polish Goalline' In Super Bowl XLVI?
Very interesting theory here. It worked if they did it on purpose.

I mentioned this at the party I was at
I wasn’t aware it had a name or anything, but once I saw the penalty and the clock, I immediately thought it was a genius move by the Giants and wondered why this hasn’t happened many times before. If it was on accident, well I’m an idiot.
Plausible.
Easy fix, just put time back on the clock in case of a defensive penalty in the final minute. It’ll get really interesting if the rules committee addresses that in the offseason.
When you gotta go in the lion's den, you don't go quiet. You go in loud, kick the door down and say WHERE IS THE SONUVABITCH. -B. Billick
It's still a bit of gamble
you’re giving the offense a free play when you do that. So although you’re going to essentially trade five yards for ~five seconds, the offense now has a free play to work with and can attempt to force the ball into coverage deep down the field (assuming the QB recognizes he has a free play). If you’re only getting one extra player on the field in exchange for it, that might still leave a hole in the zone somewhere where the offense can exploit it.
When you mess with Daboll, you get the horns.
But the risk/reward in this situation made it totally worth it
Not even a gamble really.
Yeah, what's the worst that could happen? The offense completes a pass they would have completed anyway?

It happened against the Pats
So there will be a rule change going into next season.
Seriously though, my friends and I talked about this exact thing last night (didn’t know there was a name for it though). It seemed like a brilliant call by the Giants if it was deliberate. There was some savvy coaching happening at the end of this Super Bowl…
Someone outcheated Belichick?!?

Maybe not...
but still dirty in my opinion.

Meh.
I’m good with anything that’s within the rules (or if against the rules, accepting the penalty).
I agree...
My post(s) were more observatory and not really meant to be critical…although it is "dirty’ it’s clever and legal and therefore somewhat brilliant.
I just like the thought the Belichick was potentially outsmarted.

Bump it up to a 10yrd penalty
and put time back on the clock if under 2mins.

What would happen
if, say, the giants continued to run 12 guys on the field for the following 3 plays as well?
