When Will The Kansas City Chiefs Make The Super Bowl?

OK, we've seen the New York Giants twice in the last four years. The New England Patriots have won it three times in the last 10 years and they've been there five times.

So when do the Kansas City Chiefs make the Super Bowl?

The last appearance of course came when many of you (and me) weren't even born yet -- 1970. Even Old Man Thorman was a youngster at that time.

When do the Kansas City Chiefs get their time in the sun?

I've said this a few times but it's the only thing I think about around Super Bowl time -- I can not even imagine how I would feel if the Chiefs won the Super Bowl. I can't even imagine the scenario for them to be there. I don't know if I'd be speechless or if my heart would be racing or if I'd be jumping for joy (or if I'd be drop dead drunk). It's hard to even fathom it.

But at some point the Chiefs will be there. When will that be?

I'm inclined to say "never"

I just can’t feel like all the chips will fall into place for this team, nor any of my teams. Cursed to never celebrate a championship for the teams I love. I truly believe that.

I'm so overrated, I'm underrated.

by AnkenyChiefsFan on Feb 6, 2012 12:47 PM CST up reply actions

I'd be more interested in that

but I’m not sure how that’d work with the current cap rules. If his contract has a ton of incentives, how would that fit in the cap. If he plays like crap we’d be way under the cap. If he plays well, we’d be way over. Both of which are, of course, against the rules. Anyone know how this would work?

Todd Haley lost 7 of his last 15 games by 20 or more points. It was time for him to go.

Think of it like a sales job

If you hit this goal, you get this bonus. The higher the goal, the more the bonus. That’s why Calvin Johnson’s contract is $20 million against the cap for the Lions.

I'm kind of agree with Delaney's comment above

Not sure if I will ever see the Chiefs win or go to the Super Bowl. I love this team and had you asked me when Schottenheimer was up and running I would have probably said differently but for the most part our franchise has become what most think of the 90’s Lions, Browns, 70-80’s Bucs, Bengals for last 20 years and all the other terribly run franchises out there.

We haven’t been to the Super Bowl in 40 years. We haven’t won a playoff game in nearly 20. Since our last playoff win every team in the AFC west, including the former member Seattle, have gone to the Super Bowl. In the last decade we have set records in team lows. Worst point differential in a season, worst loss, most blowout losses in a season, some of the worst defenses in franchise history (Vermeil), this year was the worst offense since I stopped looking which was 1980 at only 13.2 ppg. We still don’t spend to the salary cap, even worse we are in the bottom 2-3 in salary every year lately. We don’t sign free agents to fill holes. There is a ton of drama regarding our HC and front office. We have had like 9 starting QB’s since our last playoff win. We have had 6 HC’s in that time. Our last 2 HC have at best been dismal failures.

So, I don’t know if this team will ever make a Super Bowl as long as the Hunt family is in charge. They went from wanting to win in the early years to what we are now, which is closer to being a joke of a franchise than to the Steelers, Patriots, Giants, Niners of old, or even the Cowboys. I hope they prove me wrong. It seemed like Hunt wanted to win when he brought in Pioli but over the last 2 years we have spent a total of about 60mil under the salary cap. How many good players or quality depth could we have gotten for that money? I hope they prove me wrong. They are my team and I will always root for them, but they sure don’t make it easy to believe in them.

Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.

Part of your post is accurate but not all of your post is factual proof!
We have one some playoff games in the last 20 years, but you said we have not!
In 1997, we went to the last game before the super bowl but lost to Denver!
It was the Gerbac and Gannon drama with QB!
Most every time we make the playoffs we loose which your right there. But we have been to many playoffs since 1990, and won the AFC west several times! Only 1997 and maybe a few other Joe Montana era did we win a playoff game.
We have set many bad records, but we also set some good ones.
Actually our defense was awesome in the 90s, and okay under vermil!
I agree with you, we do not spend money like we should, however I will tell you the Hunts are good owners, Its not them thats the problem! It was peterson and our management!
I agree we have too many QB and Carl Peterson is what screwed us up starting in 1997 and we went down hill quick after that.
I agree that since Pilo we have spent the money on wrong talent!

by Jeremiah Farris on Feb 7, 2012 4:01 AM CST up reply actions

Not sure I follow you but I'll try

We didn’t win in 1997. That was the year we lost to the Broncos, at home, in the first round after going 13-3 and I believe getting home field advantage. It was the Grbac/Gannon game that most people thought we should start Gannon but Schottenheimer started Grbac instead.

The last playoff win we had was in 1993. It was the year we went to the conference championship game with Joe Montana and lost to the Buffalo Bills. The win was the week before against the Houston Oilers in Houston. So it has been like 18 years since we have won a playoff game, I said 20 but was just rounding up. I think the only team that has had a longer drought than us is Detroit but I would have to double check that. Last time I looked there were only 2 teams that had a longer time between playoff wins than us. Detroit was one.

Since our last playoff win we have gone 13-3, 3 times, lost in the first round each time. 1995 to Indi, 1997 to Denver, and 2003 to Indi. Otherwise in that time we have only been in the playoffs 3 other times, 1994, 2006, and 2010, lost first round in each.

When I said we had some of the worst defenses in our team history, I meant under Vermeil, thats why I put his name next to that comment. You say it was ok under Vermeil and if thats the case then I can only assume you are Greg Robinson or Vermeil because no one else would ever say that. We were horrendous on defense those years. As evidenced by our playoff loss where we couldn’t force a single punt.

As for the good records, not sure what ones you are talking about. We did set some offensive records under Vermeil but since Edwards took over, and under Haley, all we have done is set bad records, terrible records, ones that make me cry and die a little on the inside (ok, that may be an overstatement but they are bad).

Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.

The most important reason why i think the chiefs will get to the super bowl under manning, is it will be the first time I can actually say that the chiefs can and will be dominate on both sides of the ball. it all depends on the want, need and desire of the front office. You hear them talking a good game BUT will they back it up with putting the product on the field to achieve the goals they speak about? We as Chiefs fans don’t have a real trust in the front office because they have indoctrinated us with just being happy to win regular season games. Until they prove something, the skepticism will continue.

Issues and room to improve

Here is the deal, people say to me I am inclined to negativity! But I simply tell people I am a realist who just tells it how it is. I tell the facts of the truth of the reality! I really really want t0o be positive, but it’s hard to continue to watch the Chief’s organization makes so many dumb mistakes. Bottom line, in my 27 years of being life, I have seen 1 chief’s super bowl. I have seen only 1 year they ever got close to 1 game away and that was in 1997, but stupid coaching and management led to our dismiss, or we would have beat Denver Broncos hands down! Chiefs as a fact are far from the super bowl right now! THe hiring of Scott Poli was a good move and firing Carl Peterson. But the hiring of Todd Haley was a mistake and also with his lack of experience in head coaching he made bad decisions on QB! Granted we had many injuries which hurt the season, because we have talent in Tony Miwake, Erik Berry, Jamal Charles and so forth! But we have a major QB problem, and I think it was a mistake bring Cassel to kc! He is a good guy but hes only as good as backup and he’s not elite and a quarterback who can carry us into the future! We also hired some pretty pittiful Offensive Cordinators! So chiefs are heading in the right direction with Scott Pioli, be has to start making better choices with Clark Hunt, and stop playing crazy games! Orton throws way too many Interceptions, which is 1 reason Denver let him go, they were smart to, and Chief’s should have never brought him in, yes he play 3 great games at the end of the season, but he’s not consistant with protecting the ball, that will bite a team in the butt hard 4 yrs to come!

Bottom line chiefs have alot of changes to make and long ways to go, and until things are done right we will never reach the Big Game, and ever since Pioli and Haley has come I have only seen little progress!

THats the bottom line!

This team

just destroyed the scenario that could have helped build that SB winning team. How long will it take to get there again? It could take one year or one hundred. The sorry thing here is that no matter what the Chiefs have tried, success remains elusive. I felt like rebuilding from the ground up with players and coaches was going somewhere. Unfortunately for the fans, there were two egos that could not coexist and find a way to overcome their differences. Whether Scott Pioli did his best to destroy Todd Haley in the eyes of Clark Hunt out of a petty fear that he would lose power to a strong willed HC, or Todd Haley was a crazy, risk taking, idiot that forced Pioli’s hand by not listening to his advice—the end game doesn’t change. The Chiefs and it’s fans are once again worse for the wear and tear. It really is a sad sack organization that just keeps tripping over it’s own unit.

"You gonna pull them pistols...or whistle Dixie?"
" I believe you have to be a glass half full person in this league, you really do."--Todd Haley

I voted the last choice.

The fact of the matter is it has already been over 40 years. I don’t see what this team is doing now to change anything in the near future. Sure we’ve got some good core players, but until we are willing to gamble to get that one piece of the puzzle (a QB) we need, it ain’t happening ever again.

Faithless is he who says farewell when the road darkens...
