Dolphins switch to a 4-3 defense and what it could mean for the Chiefs.
According to an article on Yahoo.com The Dolphins will be transitioning from a 3-4 to a 4-3 defense.
GM Jeff Ireland was say that "If we had to go 4-3, we certainly have personnel to make a pretty good transition," as well as "I've prepared our scouts early on in the process, especially in December, we need to be looking at 4-3 personnel"
This could be GREAT news for the Kansas City Chiefs, and I will tell you why after the jump...
According to the yahoo.com article...
A predominantly four-man front could spell the end of Soliai's time in Miami. The nose tackle got the franchise tag last season and was stout again in the middle, but he fits better as a 3-4 nose.
This means the chance that Soliai hit the free market just went up...by a LOT. As many people have pointed out, Soliai would make a great NT for our own 3-4 Defense.
I am curious to know what RAC thinks of Soliai, and if RAC does like him, can Pioli make it happen (Unless I am wrong, Soliai is an UFA this season, so it is only money / desire...and not draft picks...that could/would keep Soliai from coming to KC).

We're 30 million under the cap
We had better show interest in him. He’s in the prime of his career and should give us 4 or so great years.
KC Draft prediction: No OT taken in first round
Actually last year
We were almost $50 million under the cap. Did that make the slightest difference in how much money we spent? (The correct answer is no) It won’t this year either. The cap means nothing until 2013.
"Trying is the first step to sucking" -Jimmy Chance
It actually will this year
because the league has a new rule mandating that all teams spend at least 90% of the salary cap. So we’re basically forced to spend it… but now it comes down to whether they blow it all on severely overpaying Carr and Bowe to stay or use it to address several needs (which I hope would also include Carr and Bowe).
1. David DeCastro (Stanford- guard) 2. Nick Foles (Arizona- quarterback) 3. Hebron Fangupo (BYU- nose tackle) 4. Derek Wolfe (Cincinnati- defensive end) 5. Brandon Taylor (LSU- safety) 6. Tom Compton (South Dakota- offensive tackle) 7. Tyler Urban (West Virginia- tight end)
I believe that takes effect next year
Hence his referrence to 2013

Dude is just saying we have the cap room to make this sort of move

I was doing additonal research and found an article about the Dolphins and Soliari's negotiations.
It says that his agent was looking of 18million in guaranteed money ON TOP of the 12 he received when he was ‘franshised’ last year. (30 Million in guareanteed money total over 4 years).
So they (Soliari / Canter..his agent) are looking of more money they Vince Wilfork got, less than Haloti Ngata, and just about what Ahtyba Rubin (Cle) received.
Soliari’s agent (Canter) knows that they might get less money than they are asking for on the open market but is willing to take the chance.
The Phins COULD Franchinse Soliari again…to the tune of almost 15 million (all guareanteed money) but I don’t think that is going to happen.
I thought the new CBA dictates that you can only use the franchise tag on a player once

wherever he goes, somebody's gonna have to shell out some big bucks
would love him here … $10 Mil? about the same for Bowe and Carr … that cap could be getting closer and closer very quickly when you factor in bonus money along with salary (when I use the $10 Mil figure that’s really what I’m doing, lumping both together for cap purposes)

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
no way he's going to get that kind of money
I’m trying to figure out what 34 teams are going to want him…Jets would, but they are rubbing the cap as it is. Steelers are a possibility, but they don’t spend big in free agency…ditto for KC & AZ. Maybe Washington? I don’t know what their NT situation is…
Predictions:
I'm going to stop predicting positive things
Jets have a VERY solid NT of their own that they can re-sign
So if they get a new guy, we can always go after Pouha (or however it’s spelled)

giving the guy money doesn't necessarily mean he's taking up a bunch of cap space.
it’s called being smart with the cap.

We don't need to worry about no stinkin salary cap...
Just hire “said” players wives to make pbj’s for x million a year.
Let’s see Miami need 4-3 players. What about trading Dorsey, a much better 4-3 tackle. For Miami’s. DT?
great idea, but they'd have to sign him first ... he's a free agent already

wonder what the price for dorsey would be via trade, 3rd round?
I just read alot of people above saying how expensive one free agent player is and how quick our cap would deminish gettnig such players, had to wonder if we trade dorsey how much cap does that free up?
his salary for this year, and perhaps a small part of his original bonus money (if any)
in other words, not much at all

I see Shaun Rogers as more likely
Although I’d love to see this guy as our “splas” signing…

A pleasant side effect of getting a huge, dominant NT
Would be that Glenn Dorsey would become more expendable. Which would give us a decent trade chip to dangle in front of the Rams in addition to draft picks.
CLE can’t offer them a run stuffer like Dorsey. Could make the difference.

I'm not in any hurry to get rid of Dorsey
but, Rogers would give KC a DE/NT guy that works well in Romeo’s system.
Powe could be the pure-NT, with Rogers as a rotational guy at both positions
I can see that.
And much as I like the idea of just sticking a monster in the middle, Rogers does appear to be a good fit, and he has a monster streak, himself. Weren’t there rumblings about Soliai, after he lost his partner up front? Wasn’t he a little clueless, there, for a while? My take on him might be inflated by the fun-size OLs we put up against him in 2011, so he made a good impression against the Chiefs, who were beaten in the trenches (BOTH sides of the ball, imo, so I ain’t complacent about OL, at ALL.). No wonder that coach got fired. As well as they controlled the line of scrimmage (in spots), they should’ve had more wins.
would of ≠ would've
The Dolphis have a DAMN good Front-7!
Ehh, improvements could made to their DB’s. But I’d even be interested in some of their DE’s if they wanted to trade one of them cheap. I wonder if any are FA’s, too? Anywhoo, the Phins are about the last team that runs a pure 2-gap, 3-4 D, IIRC?. Its purty boring. Well, LeBeau still does basically I guess. He just uses their DE’s to stunt. loop and twist a lot to disrupt along the line for his firezone blitzing schemes and such.
The only negs I’ve heard about Soliai is – yes, his noggin ain’t exactly top notch; now I have no idea whether this is true or not. And he tends to run a bit hot n’ cold, have some conditioning issues, and lack some motivation and desire from time to time; again, I have no idea how much merit any of these allegations have?
I think RAC would really have to do a sell on Rogers agreeing to to 2-gap it. I read something (maybe on here in the fanshots last year?) when he was a FA last year saying he didn’t like 2-gapping, and rather go to a 1-gap team as a DT. 2-gapping was hard on his knees and makes you really, really, really sore all over.
But Rogers would be more in Prince Clark’s/Pioli’s price range though. A couple million for a year or so. But … HAHAHAHHAHA … they sure as HELL aren’t going to pay Soliai 10-12 … bwhahahahaha! They’ll re-sign Gregg if he’s want to come back, ol’ Loco says. ;=)

Heh. Could be. Could be they switch to Powe, and Gregg remains as depth, also.
I think that Rogers said he didn’t want to be NT, but with Rogers in the rotation, NT could become very blurred, with any of the front 3 (Dorsey, Jackson, Rogers) in the middle. MAYbe we’re happy and Rogers is happy, because he gets to play more than a little 3-tech and 1-tech. All they’d have to do is shade the front one way or another, and bring either Hali or Houston, to basically be a hybrid 4-3. The actual 0-tech might just be one of many variations off that 3-tackle front.
Yeah. They don’t want to overspend for a potential Chester McGlockton. His issue was health, but Soliai’s might go the Haynesworth direction, for all I know. But I think RAC could coach Soliai to his system. That doesn’t mean KC’s gonna spend top dollar for the privilege. Amon Gordon plus Shaun Rogers would give KC a pretty good 4-man rotation at DE, that’d be plenty flexible enough to mix into the nickel and dime sets.
Some are just as interested in getting another 4-3 DE/3-4 OLB and having that 4-3 nickel front in some depth.

Paul Soliai will be a chief next year.
That is all.

I'm more hoping Philip Merling gets out of town because of this.
A Merling signing could give us the necessary depth needed to trade Dorsey and start Bailey.

I tend to think Powe is it next year with a more low key veteran signing to put depth behind him
A definite possibility, but I'll believe it when I see it.
It’d be great, though. I’d like to see him actually get off his blocks and make a play. He can definitely motor around pretty good for a true NT.

I hope they give Powe a real chance next year.
I’m really getting tired of the Patriots way of throwing geriatric patients at OL, NT/DL and RB. As Mangini said the biggest thing he learned is: You can’t go somewhere else and do it Belichick’s way. Only Belichick knows how to do it his way. You have create your own way. But I have no hope of seeing anything differently.

As it relates to RB, Belichick appears to feel the way I do: Concentrate on the team and add RBs as needed.
As it relates to NT, it’s easy to forget that NWE drafted Ron Brace the year KC drafted Tyson Jackson, and have gotten very little production out of that 1st-round NT, 3 years into that project. So what you’re seeing at NT is more about the failure of a 1st-round pick in ’09.
I think Powe will be a pocket-crusher. I think he’s gonna come up outta that 4-point stance under the shoulder pads of the OL and drive people back on pass plays. I hope he learns the hand-fighting, to get off of grabby NFL O-linemen, but that’s about my only concern. The cool thing about sticking to 2-gap is guys like Powe will fall right in your lap. Everybody else is looking for that special d-lineman who can make a splash shooting the gap. Those humble, lunch-bucket guys who make your LBs look great seem to slip in the draft. Mayock doesn’t even notice ‘em if they don’t get a sack or look awesome in the 1-on-1 drills. Just pushin’ your guy straight back for 3 or 4 yards isn’t going to get you that flag in the pass-rushing drills, but accomplishing that and preserving left-or-right option while you do it is PERfect for getting a teammate a sack.
NWE spent a 1st-rounder on OT in 2011: Nate Solder. They also went out and got the best FA G they could find, in Brian Waters. I’ve felt they’ve had RT issues, right along, and I felt that Solder was a sign of “We need OT NOW,” even though his power profile is more LT than RT, and he was nowhere near beatin’ out Matt Light. With a TE to work with, I think Belichick has always looked at RT as about the last thing you address aggressively.
