Brian Daboll 2012 Chiefs OC Official

Adam shefter just reported that the chiefs hired Brian Daboll, ex dolphins OC for the vacant chiefs OC job. Me and along with other chiefs fans were hoping for the return of al saunders. I don't know much about him but I saw he was on the patriots with RAC when they won 3 super bowls. What are your thoughts? So far so good for me, I'll continue to research how he's done in the past.

I was hoping for Saunders

But honestly, that’s because I haven’t heard much of anything about Daboll

Charles, Mccluster, Moeaki, Bowe, Breaston, Baldwin, DJ, Berry, Flowers, Carr= Super Bowl Bound.

Because calling plays in Cleveland = success.

I prefer to look at how he grew from effing up with the Browns, and making a pretty good season out of it in Miami this year.

I wanted Saunders as bad as the next guy, but I’m willing to wait and see on Coach Daboll. His learning curve looks pretty steep. Plus, he’s worked in Erhardt AND Coryell style offenses. It shows he’s likely less of a “system” guy….that’s a plus.

Hmm. We’ll see.

Not a bad hire...

He ran a very versetile offense. The first SB they won was based on heavy usage of Cory Dillon… They made an easy transition to Brady and a wide open passing attack. He’s from the school of thought that (like Weis) doesnt really have a set system. He changes the offense to best attack the opposing defense…. at least, that’s the Weis claim to fame. Good thing is that this allows KC to keep the same personel and base system. No major changes.
But, like I voted…… We’ll see

by Lokrath on Feb 3, 2012 11:50 PM CST reply actions

He's got four years' experience in the Coryell offense too (time with the Jets).

So he does have outside experience with other offenses…

He did run an ugly offense in Cleveland, but so far, so has anyone not named “Chud.”

Could be a good hire…could be a fuckup. I’m keeping my mind open; like you, I was impressed by what he got done in Miami this year.

Initial feeling is let down and disappointment.

Not a fan of this move. Not a proven oc in the least. I can’t see this guy bringing any sort of spark to this offense.

And I’m a tad sick of new england’s leftovers.

by bossmanham on Feb 4, 2012 12:06 AM CST via mobile reply actions

It's not like the guy stayed in NE because he couldnt do anything anywhere else.

He left to coach the Jets wide receivers, then he coached the Jets quarterbacks, then he called plays in Cleveland in ’09 (note: He evidently treated McCoy like hell, but McCoy also had an above-average rookie year, too). Finally, he and his staff turned Reggie Bush and Matt Moore into starters at the NFL level.

I wanted Al Saunders, but I’m happier with this than a Zorn promotion and WAY, way happier with this than a Carthon promotion. Mo Carthon is to coaching as Fazoli’s is to fine dining.

will the chiefs ever draft a Qb in the first round, not since todd blackledge in 83. and the chiefs could of had marino. OH well atleast 65 toss power trap worked for KC, it should be wide open red. Hank stram still the man.

by niageriannit1 on Feb 4, 2012 12:10 AM CST reply actions

I think he's good but I wanted Al

…but I think the Raiders are going to hold on to Al for spite. Daboll uses the Weiss/McDaniels offense to a good degree so that’s in place already.

by FrankPitts on Feb 4, 2012 12:17 AM CST reply actions

Daboll is highly motivated...

…he was thought almost as highly of by Bellichick as McDaniels and left Pats because he wasn’t made QB coach.

Highly motivated...

But has still sucked.

by bossmanham on Feb 4, 2012 12:23 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

Did you watch the Miami game this year? 38-3?

He’s not an exciting hire, but he doesn’t suck, I don’t think.

Any man who can make Cassel’s brother from another mother, Matt Moore, look legit as a starter has to be worth at least a look-see.

No.

Guy has never proven anything other than being mediocre at best. I was OK with making Romeo interim coach with the impression that they’d go out and get an up-and-coming or proven OC that could light some fire under the offense. Instead we have another journeyman. I’m willing to admit I could be totally wrong here, but I’d venture to say you now how have nothing to be excited about with the 2012 chiefs.

I think he's done well with what he has had

Colt McCoy regressed greatly without him, he made the most out of Miami with no QB…I loved Al but Al had a Hall of Fame O-line

by FrankPitts on Feb 4, 2012 12:27 AM CST reply actions

Second coming of Haley

Read an article about him on Yahoo. He used to yell at Colt McCoy in his helmet while he was trying to call plays. Other Browns players didn’t approve of his methods. Sounds like a real winner to me.

by GoChiefs2012 on Feb 4, 2012 12:30 AM CST reply actions

That's exactly why I like the hire

He does sound alot like Haley, at least demeanor wise. Hopefully he can be as innovative and creative offensively because the Offense is gonna be his alone.

by dablueguy on Feb 4, 2012 2:45 AM CST up reply actions

And look at the season McCoy had under this yeller and screamer, in '10, compared to what he did last year.

Methinks two things…

a) the story is over the top
b) McCoy needs a boot up his ass (as do a lot of Texas players at the NFL level)
c) a little of both.

I like Mike Silver and the Yahoo crew, but they took that quote straight from McCoy’s book. That’s like asking Timberlake what he thought of Britney right after they broke up…or what Parcells thought of Belichick right after he stiffed the Jets for NE.

Given some talent and three, four quarterbacks who can run an NFL offense, have him pick the better passer of the three/four, and go to war.

We’re going to feed the ball to Charles a TON, if my read on his playcalling in MIA is correct. Thats always a plus.

There really wasn't a guy out there that was head and shoulders better.

For me, that was Bruce Arians, but who knows how that would have went.

Hopefully Brian can figure out some new ways to utilize Dexter and Jammaal. The good part about this is all of the terms will be similar so the learning curve will be easier for the offense.

The best part is, no matter who it is, it is a fresh perspective and the Chiefs needed that more than anything. If Daboll is ever going to be a good OC, he should be able to start with all of the Chiefs weapons.

The biggest thing I wanted was new coaches

Some people to come in and look at what we have and make some solid smart adjustments, because the talent is there.

This is a good foundation of a team, they just need some help getting a little better. Hopefully, they can take what they learned from Todd, add a little Daboll salt to it and be ready to go.

It is definitely not a sexy pick though.

Plus, all three of the top positions would be 65 years old.

That concerned me, even though I too wanted Saunders. We’d be looking at replacing the entire staff, possibly, in just a few years. Plus, he hasn’t really done anything special outside of that run with Vermeil.

I never did get used to Bill Muir, so I hope it’s not like that.

Stuff like this is a bother
It’s hard to describe the style of offense the Browns were running the past two seasons under former head coach Eric Mangini and former offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. Archaic and simplistic are some words that come to mind. Cleveland’s passing game was very conservative and it was a big reason why president Mike Holmgren made the coaching change to an offensive mind in Pat Shurmur.

and yet, all of the articles in Miami talked about his creativity and ability to motivate.

I think he learned from his time in Cleveland….seriously, outside of Chudzinski, who has succeeded in that town since 1999? And they’ve had a parade of good to decent coaches swing through town, too.

Well he'll get his chance

Yes none of his offenses have ranked high but he’s only been a OC for three years. Plus none of the teams had much talent, so I wouldn’t spend to much time looking into it. I like what he did with miami last year and the fact that he is a intense coach might be a good thing considering most of the remaining staff is pretty laid back. Now I just hope he’s the type that wants to decide who starts and sits and isn’t afraid to tell the GM no.

Wonder if this means we have some miami free agents heading our way?

by Rollo80 on Feb 4, 2012 5:18 AM CST reply actions

Daboll?????

If the idiot wasn’t part of the McCoy situation, i’d say this was a good hire. What he did with Reggie Bush was unexpected. I thought Reggie would fall on his face. Even McCoy did well with his offense. But he seems to be another problem child.Next we’ll hire the guy that tripped the guy out of bounce.

It seems like a bunch of jerks came from the Patriots or are still there. So if you are happy with all the jerks as long as you win. This was a good hire. If you want to be treated fairly at a game. Or your drafted Qb to be helped along instead of some childish garbage. This was a bad hire.

by Totally confused on Feb 4, 2012 5:23 AM CST reply actions

And yet, no one called him an a-hole in Miami. Chad Pennington and others really stuck up for the guy.

Bear in mind, that bitchout section in the Yahoo article was quoted from McCoy’s book. That’s like your best friend and his wife divorcing, and then you asking him “How were things with the old lady, anyway?”.

Yup. You’ll have stories just like McCoy’s.

That’s all I’m sayin’….consider the source.

What was RAC looking for?

Brian Daboll !!
1. Someone he knew and trusted.
2. A creative play caller who had no set system.
3. OC who knew how to attack different defences.
4. A small learning curve for his offensive players.
5. A OC who had sucess with very average QB’s & had experience working with QB’s.
6. A OC who could get all his playmakers involved in every game, thus a better chance for sucess!

He made a sub-par team score 24 points a game with a average QB. If that is not being a good OC then im not sure what is. What would the chiefs record be if we scored 24 points a game?
