Days before the Super Bowl, federal authorities blitzed more than a dozen websites illegally streaming live sporting events.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other agencies announced Thursday that they had seized 16 websites and brought criminal charges against a Michigan man who operated nine of them.

So SOPA was meaningless then?

Seems like the government never needed it anyways, King Obama sure is putting in a lot of fascist work in before his reelection.

Love how its Obama’s fault when it takes congress to send him stuff to sign into law

by vplus10 on Feb 3, 2012 3:25 PM CST up reply actions

You do realize that Obama runs ICE right?

ICE is the one who took down the sites, and he doesnt need congress’ permission to run ICE.

Or just look at the ACTA treaty Obama signed the other dya, didnt get Congress’ permission for that either and its still law.

Not meaningless.

That would have given them even more power to shut down sites that were simply under suspicion. They still need stuff like warrants and probable cause.

It doesnt matter hes assumed the power already

What gives him the right to shut down foreign or international websites, not based in the US?

Megaupload was from Hong Kong, why did Obama just assume Chief of World Police duties? I think it has something to do with all that corporate money telling him he can.

If they were out of bounds, then I guess Dotcom will win in court.

I checked

He’s stuck here after being denied bail and the US is seeking extradition. We arrested him on your behalf

by Chief Fan NZ on Feb 3, 2012 3:56 PM CST up reply actions

ICE didn't shut down the Megaupload site

as for Chief of World Police duties … the USofA has been that for YEARS … it really is allow about the money, that goes for the other side of the aisle too

I dont see sides

Theyre all for the most part in the Greenback Party.

Only in America will we have an Election with thousands of nominees and only see two sides, two candidates. Our stupidity will be our undoing.

They did this last year too right before the superbowl.

Took the sites about 2 weeks before they were up and running under different domain names

by Chief Fan NZ on Feb 3, 2012 3:38 PM CST reply actions

Only to shut down again not long later.

Or in the case of ATDHE, come back in a crappy form with very little to offer, including no NFL games.

I decided this year I'd had enough

Of streams being cut down at inopportune moments, lag and poor quality and shelled out a fair bit of money for GamePass

by Chief Fan NZ on Feb 3, 2012 3:44 PM CST up reply actions

I never had that problem.

Of course, the site I used most often was just shut down…

There are still other sources, though, and more will pop up. As long as they’re trying to cut off the supply instead of meeting the demand themselves, they’ll be fighting a losing battle.

No, but they could stream the Super Bowl

complete with all those expensive commercials.

But most of the commercials I see are purely aimed at american audiences

Very few would apply to me. Though I do enjoy watching them, you guys have some terrible advertising sometimes

by Chief Fan NZ on Feb 3, 2012 4:04 PM CST up reply actions

Advertising could be targeted

differently to different audiences, by IP address.

by Tarkus on Feb 3, 2012 4:08 PM CST up reply actions

True, but would companies want to pay to advertise in New Zealand or Costa Rica

Where the amount of superbowl viewers are lower, especially when espn screens it here.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the idea, just playing devil’s advocate

by Chief Fan NZ on Feb 3, 2012 4:11 PM CST up reply actions

Sure.

They’d just have to adjust the price for what the market will bear. Obviously they couldn’t charge as much as they do to run ads in U.S. markets.

Just glad that NBC has the decency to put their games online

Fox and CBS need to take notice and get this going with the next round of negotiations (2013 or 2014, right?). The region-only era of games has ended, and the NFL is way behind.

by cheapham on Feb 3, 2012 4:03 PM CST reply actions

Difference is

NBC only has one game a week. And it also doesn’t fall under the DirecTV monopoly package.
