My Chiefs 2012 Offseason... Thoughts?
I believe that with Manning’s recent medical clearance we should make a valiant effort to sign him. He is the missing link on an otherwise Super Bowl worthy team. Not saying he guarantees a super bowl win or even a berth, but he at least puts us atop the AFC West with a legit shot at winning a playoff game or two which is more than I can say for either Cassel or even Orton (whom I actually like). In the NFL you live and die by the QB position and so I’m going all in on this one.
On the other side of the ball, we are one bad mamma-jamma NT away from being ELITE. We’re talking back to the Neil Smith and DT58 days at Arrowhead. Lights out defense with a raucous crowd, total homefield advantage. That NT I believe is Paul Soliai of the Dolphins who most around here also know and love.
So here’s my ideal offseason. I’m not a pro on the fiscal side of things so I’m not entirely sure how or if all of these could be signed but if the Eagles can sign the whole world why can’t we figure out a way to get some decent players here as well?
Free Agents:
Re-sign - Carr, Bowe, McClain, Gilberry, Gordon
Newly Sign - Manning, Soliai, Shaun Rogers, Joel Dreesson, Veteran Safety
Draft:
- 1. David DeCastro, G
- 2. Zebrie Sanders, RT
- 3. Antonio Allen, S
- 4. Michael Egnew, TE
- 5. Ryan Broyles, WR
- 6. William Vlachos, C
- 7a/7b. RB/WR (power back, speed receiver/deep threat)
Depth Chart:
Offense -
QB - Manning, Stanzi, ?
RB - Charles, 7thRd RB, Battle, McClain, McCluster
WR - Bowe, Baldwin, Breaston, Broyles, McCluster, 7thRd Wr
TE - Moeaki, Dreesson, Egnew
O-line - Albert, DeCastro, Hudson, Asamoah, Sanders, Lilja/Vlachos/Mims
Defense -
NT - Soliai, Powe
DE - Jackson, Dorsey, Rogers, Bailey, Gordon, Gilberry
OLB - Hali, Houston, Studi, Sheffeld
ILB - DJ, Siler, Belcher, Greenwood
CB - Flowers, Carr, Arenas, Brown
S - Berry, Lewis, Allen, Vet FA, McGraw
Special Teams -
P - Colquitt
K - Succop
LS - Gafford (also Dreesson did some LS for Houston I think...)
PR/KR - Arenas, McCluster
I would only sign Shaun Rogers if he comes on the cheap, otherwise no thank you sir. Also a RB to look into could be Michael Bush from Oakland who I believe is a FA this year, would strengthen us and weaken a division rival which is always good. Also I really like Allen in the 3rd, he’s tall enough and athletic enough to be one of the new hybrid LB/S combos we need to help cover TE’s especially with the new dual TE sets people are and will be running more and more.
I think if we focus early in the draft on finishing a stout O-line to put Peyton behind and with all of our weapons we could be Top 10 on Offense and with Soliai, returning Berry, and adding some depth at Safety, and hopefully Houston turning into a beast we can be a Top 5 Defense. Tell me that team couldn’t at least win us a playoff game!
What are you thoughts, am I crazy? Is this feasible?

That would be a heck of an offseason
With a lot of chips falling into place. I don’t think it’ll go that well, but I’d take that offseason all day.
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.

would be an AWESOME off-season gear-up to 2012
well done, Doc! props for the work and thank you for sharing with us!

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Admit it. You stopped reading after:
Draft:
1. David DeCastro, G
If it wasn’t for the accursed paycheck, would I really imprison myself in this dungeon of the human soul?

Haha you know he did!!!
I knew ups would like it based on that alone, but hopefully he liked some of the rest too. But I’m on the DeCastro wagon right now, he solidifies the line for years.
TBH ... love #1 and #3 ... not sold yet on Sanders, Egnew is "ok" ... thinking Dwayne Allen (TE) in 2nd would be delightful if he's there
overall a very solid lineup though, and I’m just “picky” about top few choices … after that it’s a crap shoot anyway (hell, it’s all crap shoot when you get down to it)

Who the hell would stop reading after he suggests we draft the best player on the board?

I don't know why everyone around here is so high on Sanders...
from what I’ve seen the dude gets beat alot…No thanks
First of all, you throwin' too many big words at me, and because I don't understand them, I'm gonna take 'em as disrespect...

Mayock had him as his 5th rated tackle, behind some random dude from Wichita Tech Grand National State
I also read that he was getting smashed all week during the Senior Bowl, so if we’re really going to look at him, hopefully it’s waaaaay later on.
"There will be increased competition at every position, including the quarterback position".-Scott Pioli
I read a lot of that too
and even some questions as to whether he’ll have to move inside to guard now because of it. From what I saw in the FSU/Notre Dame bowl game, I fell in love with the guy as a mid round pick…but for some reason, he has suddenly jumped into late 1st round consideration and I don’t see why.
1. David DeCastro (Stanford- guard) 2. Nick Foles (Arizona- quarterback) 3. Hebron Fangupo (BYU- nose tackle) 4. Derek Wolfe (Cincinnati- defensive end) 5. Brandon Taylor (LSU- safety) 6. Tom Compton (South Dakota- offensive tackle) 7. Tyler Urban (West Virginia- tight end)
I've been tempted to put this as my Mock draft for a while. At least the first three picks.
I wouldn’t mind seeing a Joe Adams in the 7th if he falls there. Dude can flat out fly. and he’s a pretty good punt returner. Kinda reminds me of Devin Hester, but he’s always been a receiver.

I thought Joe Adams was a third round prospect?
I was once fired from a job two days after I waited on Matt Cassel and his wife Lauren Killian. Totally my AP moment to remember. Unfortunately also one of my stupidest moments.

Ark was really loaded at WR:
Adams probably a 3rd.
Wright probably a 4th/5th.
Childs probably a 6th/7th.

Could be.
I saw several mocks that had him going in the 6th-7th. but those were before the senior bowl.

I like the Free Agent Signings
But i’m not so sure about the draft. I like Decastro, but I’d rather an OT. And then I’d rather go for a proven TE in the off season, because we need a veteran who can also help Moeaki develop, Someone like Finely or Chandler. But overall you made a really good post!
Charles, Mccluster, Moeaki, Bowe, Breaston, Baldwin, DJ, Berry, Flowers, Carr= Super Bowl Bound.
no thanks of Finley ... talented but not a "team first" guy
according to the good people at Acme Packing Company (ChiefsSwagger got some really good quotes about him from there a coupla weeks ago) and just as we at AP know our players better than anyone in the world, I think the same is true of those fans and the Packers
