These 2 men are the top two guards in the draft and more than likely the who have a chance of being first round picks. Their names are of course David DeCastro out of Stanford and Cordy Glenn from Georgia. Now many of you are saying whoa whoa whoa the first round is not the place to take a interior offensive lineman right? Now me on the other hand I'm saying lineman are great picks anytime I mean they usually have productive careers and are usually easy to judge. So I went ahead and looked at every draft since 2004 and saw how many of these so called not worth a first round pick interior lineman have been drafted. I came up with 14 including 2 who are debatable as what position they play. Let's look at the list after the jump...
#15 Mike Pouncey OC
#23 Danny Watkins OG
#25 James Carpenter OG
#17 Mike Iupati OG
#18 Maurice Pouncey OC
#21 Alex Mack OC
#28 Eric Wood OC
#15 Brandon Albert OG/OT
#29 Ben Grubbs OG
#24 David Joseph OG
#29 Nick Mangold OC
#26 Cris Spencer OC
#32 Logan Mankins OG
#2 Robert Gallery OT/OG
Alright the number next to their name is obviously not there jersey but there draft pick number. A lot more than I thought there would be and it seems to be more popular as of late. Now its about a 50/50 split of Guards and Centers and I've included Gallery and Albert because they both kinda switch positions from what they were listed as coming out. I've left out OT because that is a post for another day when I have way more time to analyze the million of them drafted in the first round. The thing that jumps out at me most is the quality of this list. I mean your looking at some of the top interior lineman in the league and really I don't know about the newest guys like Danny Watkins but there really isn't one player on here who isn't damn good.
This list consist of multiple Pro Bowlers and guys that could be any given year. Your looking at not only the top 2 centers in my mind but also 2 or 3 of the top guards in the league on here also. There also seems to be almost 100% accuracy for starters and quality starters at that. So back to the main point here the Chiefs are picking 11 and only one guy on this list has ever been drafter higher than that and he was listed as a OT. So we all can assume a trade back would be a good idea but how can you not like picking an interior lineman with these results. Yes we all know that they can be had later but looks like some pretty ELITE lineman are had early just like any other position.
For a team that plans on running the ball a lot and has grown accustomed to having Pro Bowl guards why not try and get the next one with this years pick? I mean I'm not saying it would be the best idea to draft one at 11 but trading back 5 or so spots and taking your choice of the 2 top guards in the draft might be nice. Plus you get a good deal on a guy who can start for 12 or more years as we've seen with some of our lineman as of late ie Shields, Waters, and Casey. Just a little food for thought when your debating that DeCastro is no way worth are pick in the first.
