Third Shift Open Thread

We've posted this picture before but dammit if it doesn't make me smile every time I see it.

The big NFL talk right is the NFL Combine, which I unfortunately have not had the time to follow closely. Oddly enough, since I've been working at SB Nation, I'm positive I watch fewer sporting events than before.

This is your open thread for the night. How is everyone doing this Tuesday?

The entire campus was freaking out because of a Tornado Warning. They sent everyone one to the basement. What did I do? I went outside.

Last time they ran the sirens I just wanted them to shut up so I could go back to sleep. They use them way too much here.

Hate to be "that guy"

but don’t be stupid. Get inside and take cover when there’s a Tornado Warning. It’s not much of a hassle, and when the real deal comes you’ll be glad.

If the Chiefs don't win a Super Bowl by 2075, I quit.

I hear where you're coming from. I used to be the same way.

but when that monster hit us in Joplin, I was telling my fianceé to calm down and that it wasn’t that big of a deal right up until about 2 minutes before it hit us.

The NOAA report on the Joplin tornado concluded that the single biggest reason for the high fatalities was residents’ failure to heed warnings when they were first given.

I think part of the problem is that they use the sirens too much.

If they go off three times a year, then people will stop taking them seriously, because it will be impossible to tell when it’s real and when it’s not.

by wustl_chiefs_fan on Feb 28, 2012 11:36 PM CST up reply actions

agreed

Coincidentally, I had this exact same discussion with a group of friends the day before the Joplin Tornado.

I think that’s just being cautious, though. I think that article states that they’re supposed to only sound the sirens when a tornado has been spotted or if winds are in excess of 75 MPH. Unfortunately, though, weather patterns are very hard to predict on such a small scale.

If they sound the sirens when there’s a tornado 4 miles east of you that might travel north, west, or south, and it travels north and misses you, I’d hardly say that was an unwarranted sounding of the sirens.

If the Chiefs don't win a Super Bowl by 2075, I quit.

by joplin chiefs fan on Feb 28, 2012 11:42 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, I've thought about that.

Personal experience says tornadoes rarely hit when the sirens are on, but I know enough to know personal experience isn’t a very good argument for this kind of thing, and I’m sure that the people who actually run it have a very good reason.

Then again, I know enough about people to know that it could be caused by some stupid person who probably has power over people who know better.

by wustl_chiefs_fan on Feb 28, 2012 11:46 PM CST up reply actions

I went with a group to Joplin shortly after the tornado hit

I will never again just go outside to see the thing like I always did before. Until you’ve been through one or seen the devastation and wonder how it could only be this many dead, it just really doesn’t affect you I guess

I'm not concerned with UMKC's quality.

The main issue is that it’ll cost money while I’d be making money working. But, in theory, I’ll make more money in the long run by getting a Master’s anyway. Plus, I can just live my parents, so going to UMKC won’t cost as much.

I've probably missed all the comments on this guy

but what about:

Alameda Ta’amu, NT, Washington: 6-2½, 348. Made himself a lot of money with a terrific week at the Senior Bowl. “You can’t single-block him,” one scout said. “He’s athletic for his size.” Started 42 of 50 games, finishing with 7½ sacks. “He’s very much like Paul Soliai of the Dolphins,” another scout said. “He is a true space-eater. He didn’t play like that (the Senior Bowl) all year. He did have a good Senior Bowl, he really did. He’s got a big (expletive) and great big thick thighs on him.”

fanpost is up on this scouting report for GB, good stuff

I live in Bellevue NE (Stationed at Offutt AFB) and will get most of the KC home games when they are playing well. IF KC struggles then Denver and Chicago games take over in my area.

Any thoughts? Should I get it or should I just bank on KC going 16-0 and being able to catch them all on my local channels?

It makes a lot of sense if you think about it.

They’ve got a 2-3 year window with Reed, Rice and Lewis being the cornerstones. They’ve gotten where they can get with Flacco. Granted, they could get some lucky breaks with Flacco and win, but that isn’t the optimal situation. For that 2-3 year window, why not throw out the luck variable and go with Manning. When the 2-3 year window is over and Reed, Lewis and Rice are done, where is Flacco going to take them anyway? They’ll have to rebuild when those guys are done, why not start now?

by BeauJackson on Feb 28, 2012 10:04 PM CST up reply actions

I'm holding on to this one.

I just don’t see Manning ending up in Arizona or Washington. The Ravens, Falcons and Jets all make sense when looking at teams that need a little something more to reach the top. The Chiefs do to, but I just don’t see it happening.

by BeauJackson on Feb 28, 2012 10:15 PM CST up reply actions

They're the bottom dweller I could see making sense.

Have some O-Line pieces, have Marshall, Wayne went to Miami so he’d probably follow, not a terrible defense. I still think he ends with a team that is already good instead of a team that hopes he makes them good.

Well

I dunno about the whole Ravens thing, but I would think that KC would be much more attractive than most of the other bullshit teams they (sports media) keep trying to link him to. We have cap room to pay, although we would never pay absolute top dollar. We have a really strong up and coming defense. We have weapons in both the running and passing game. If we address the O-line issues, it’s obvious he could come in and take over a winner.

I think Romeo has made it publicly clear to Scott Pioli

that he wants to do something in regards to the current QB situation. I’m not going to say it’s a slam dunk by any means, but I do think this snowball has a chance in hell. Manning already has more money than God. He only has a few (potentially) good years left to win. Little bro has already passed him with two rings and two SBMVP awards. If he’s as smart as we all know he is, he’ll understand that he’s not going to get the kind of money with a winner that he otherwise would. I think it’s just as much on Peyton to compromise on a good deal as it is the Chiefs to pony up for a real QB. That said, I think there’s a chance.

also consider that this year will be insane with over 600 FA’s hitting the open market. It’ll probably be a bit more entertaining than the last few years. Also considering that he’s done a pretty damn good job of retaining the core of the team WITH cap space to spare. Stanford Rout isn’t a bad start at all IMO.

My cousin is settling an old credi card debt that's being handled by a 3rd different collections agency.

How much should he be paying in a settlement? I told him no more then 25-30% but not exactly my area of expertise. Anyone ever deal with this before?

I had to do 50%

I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.

loving the report that the raiders are 22million over the cap

PFT

If the 2012 cap lands at $120 million and based on the availability of $3.23 million in 2011 cap space that can be carried over, the Raiders still must clear more than $22 million in the next two weeks.
