After last years pathetic season, and in my observation it was all on the ex coach, I see a bright future ahead. For some our team is in dire straights because of a perceived need at QB. Others believe that we must get a NT. Some like myself are on the RT bandwagon, while others want a guard. Most of us hope and believe the Center is going to be Hudson and assume he will be good doing that. Well I am going to let you all in on an observation or two, nothing dramatic but to me self evident.
Firstly, we need to have our young, skilled playmakers return in good health and fine fettle. With the return of the big three on offense- Matt Cassel, Jamaal Charles and Tony Moeaki our offense is looking good with the other players who stepped up with those guys missing games. Many feel feel that our QB is all done and proven to be a sub-standard player by NFL standards. I must confess that I was wavering in my opinion as well. However, after letting it sift in the brain some I came to the conclusion that Haley was the causation for his degrading.
I have never witnessed on any level of football the terrible play calling we witnessed last year, or the ineptitude in which the plays were delivered to Matt. How many times I remember our QB signaling for the call from the sidelines in each game. Not an occasional game but every game!! Throw in a decrepit Center and really bad RT and we were shown the resulting success or lack thereof. I like Cassel and hope he hasn't been scarred psychologically from the experience and can bounce back into a QB we all can be proud of. It may be to late and I worry that the rest of the team has lost faith in his abilities, but am hoping the hiring of an OC who has familiararity with him will deliver the player we saw a couple of years ago.
As far as the RT and Center positions, I am looking for competence. Blue collar players who just chug along like the little engine that could. These guys don't have to be all pro, just good enough or competent if you will, in their ability to man those positions in a manner that do not cause negative plays. I would really like to see a FA Center come in as Hudson is untested and mans a position in which he handles the ball every snap that the offense takes. Don't get me wrong as I want Hudson to be the guy, but am feeling a little trepadation.
Having Eric Berry returning is a huge plus for the defense, and the report is looking good for him and all the guys who were injured last year. After losing some games and then transitioning into the changes that happened after losing Berry, much needed experience was garnered and the future of the Defense is looking good. Sure we need to address the NT position, but with a player who is competent at that position. He doesn't need to be great, just experienced and able to handle a few snaps a game competently. I have been on the bandwagon for a couple of years for that attitude guy that the whole defense looks to and tries to live up to. So rather than a particular position of need for the D, I want that balls to the wall, no holds barred never give up stud horse that gives this D the identity and moxie that I see lacking.
So in surmise, it isn't much that really needs accomplished for us to contend. We are pretty close to having a very competitive team for the forseeable future with a few additions. A couple of free agents and a player or 2 in the draft and Bingo! we have a winner! Go Chief's.
