Very different language in what he said about Bowe compared to Carr
Bowe is here to stay for sure. Carr on the other hand he uses language like “If both sides find a deal that makes sense for one another” and then here again while talking about Bowe he refers back to Carr and reiterates “The important part is that you have to come to an agreement”. Something tells me they want Carr back but aren’t close at all with where Carr wants to be financially and Pioli is basically saying the ball is now in his court.

Depending on how he said it you could be right that “Just like Brandon Carr” could be more tied to the first part of what he said or it could be tied to the last part.

I think Joel is using his Routt filter. If you take what he says at face value, I see no difference between how he’s talking about the two players.

Laugh all you want, I'm just saying one strategy should not preclude the other from happening.
I want the Chiefs to go after Manning, but he’s a short term fix. We would be wise to start looking to acquire a QBOTF even if we do sign him so we aren’t back here in 2 years.
And obviously you understand that while Rodgers is not acquirable, both Manning and RGIII are. And since one is acquired with money and the other players and picks, the two are not mutually exclusive scenarios.
Now I don’t expect us to get Manning or Griffin. I don’t even expect Pioli to make a strong play for either one. I’d be thrilled if we ended up with either. But if you’re asking me what we should do, I think we should make a play for both.

I can understand if Bowe wants to shop. The offense is going through another transition, the QB situation is questionable at best. If I was in Bowe’s position I would definitely like to go talk to teams like NE, GB, SF, NO, etc.

The Chiefs are very similar to the 49ers.
Mediocre QB, great run game, good defense. The Niners are a team that just turned the corner, the Chiefs are a team that has recently turned the corner. A healthy Chiefs team compares very closely to a healthy Niners team.

Not sure I would hate this actually.
Get a beef cake NT and it might actually work. Berry is versatile enough to attack the LoS or drop back into coverage. That would put a lot of wear on him quickly though.

Also, safety isn't really out of the question for a "normal" base set
Both Routt and Carr have the frame to handle safety (maybe add a few pounds). Especially if the Chiefs see Lewis as up-gradable. We certainly could use the safety depth.

In a way I kind of feel sorry for Bowe.
Dude has had to put up with shitty QBs and a constantly changing offense his entire time here. Surely he wants to get on a team with an established QB and offense. You would think Carr on the other hand would take a reasonable offer and want to stay here. Romeo and Emmit Thomas helped make him what he is today. He’s got great safety help behind him and a solid friend and CB opposite of him. Plus a front 7 that is coming along nicely.
Seems like Carr should want to remain and Bowe to shop, due to the progress and overall state of the team.

That is the one saving grace in all this.
We actually have a pretty good crop of CBs for them to work with too. Flowers, Routt, Javi, Brown, etc. We’ve invested a lot of resources into getting some decent CB talent. As much as it pains me to say, Carr is expendable. Just wish we could hang on to him.

If you have a bad QB, and your WR still produces like Bowe does, that speaks volumes on how good that WR is.

He’d have better practice at it, and wouldn’t drop the ball so much.

He wasn't the focal point for 5 years, we still had Gonzo
And being the focal point doesn’t make Bowe look worse, it means that he’s who the defense focuses on besides the running game and he sees more double teams. Yet still produces.
We’ve already seen what happens when he’s not the focal point and we rely on other WRs like against the Donkeys, we can’t get crap done.

A point I tried to make last year regards Charles, having one player generating 25% of your offensive output is a bad thing if that player goes down.

They’re paid based on what they’re expected to do. Teams look at past performance as an indicator of what they might do in the future, not so they can reward them for what they’ve already done.

Based on past performance Brandon Lloyd didn’t get a big contract before he signed with Denver. The last 2 years he has showed he can be a # 1 WR so this offseason he will get paid like one.

I agree it's a lot of cap space for one guy
However, I disagree we’d get similar numbers from a cadre of cheaper WRs. Bowe was far more important to our passing game than Breaston or Baldwin this year; one of those guys was a first round pick and the other a respected slot receiver. I don’t know that either could pick up the slack for losing Bowe. I see the argument for one of two things, paying a top QB that can make lesser WR more productive than they should be or paying a lot of quality receivers to bolster a weak QB. Right now, we have the players to do the second option, not the first.
