It's complicated
if the two sides have completely different definitions for “his money.”

Very different language in what he said about Bowe compared to Carr
Bowe is here to stay for sure. Carr on the other hand he uses language like “If both sides find a deal that makes sense for one another” and then here again while talking about Bowe he refers back to Carr and reiterates “The important part is that you have to come to an agreement”. Something tells me they want Carr back but aren’t close at all with where Carr wants to be financially and Pioli is basically saying the ball is now in his court.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
i still think they offered carr something very close to routt's dea, just over 5-6 years, he declined, and they went a different route with routt

3 year age difference, 3 year contract difference? makes one wonder
if they let colquitt walk im going to kick someone
Team Colquitt
I don't disagree
but I don’t think the above quote makes the case Joel’s conclusion does.
“We’re hopeful to re-sign Dwayne,” Pioli said. "One way or another, we would love to have Dwayne back here as a Chief.
Just like Brandon [Carr].
Those words suggest that both situations are exactly (just like) the same.
“We’re hopeful to re-signDwayneBrandon (Carr),” Pioli said. "One way or another, we would love to haveDwayneBrandon back here as a Chief
I think the particular translation is based on the signing of Routt.
But hey, I don’t get paid to make people post :)

I didn't hear the interview but I'd like to just to hear how he said it.
Depending on how he said it you could be right that “Just like Brandon Carr” could be more tied to the first part of what he said or it could be tied to the last part.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"

I agree.
I think Joel is using his Routt filter. If you take what he says at face value, I see no difference between how he’s talking about the two players.
in other words, sign the contract d-bowe, or else the tag is a coming

What if we resign Carr, tag then trade Bowe, Dorsey and our first rounder to St Louis and get RGIII

In all seriousness, though, I would be 100% in favor of signing Peyton Manning then drafting RGIII to groom behind him for a year or two.
If all goes well we’ve fixed the QB position for the next 15 years.

Laugh all you want, I'm just saying one strategy should not preclude the other from happening.
I want the Chiefs to go after Manning, but he’s a short term fix. We would be wise to start looking to acquire a QBOTF even if we do sign him so we aren’t back here in 2 years.
And obviously you understand that while Rodgers is not acquirable, both Manning and RGIII are. And since one is acquired with money and the other players and picks, the two are not mutually exclusive scenarios.
Now I don’t expect us to get Manning or Griffin. I don’t even expect Pioli to make a strong play for either one. I’d be thrilled if we ended up with either. But if you’re asking me what we should do, I think we should make a play for both.

I would rather
Not give up the picks to get rg3 if he isn’t going to start game 1. If manning is the guy, which I would be fine with, I’d rather have osweiler or foles backing up manning, and fix other areas
With those picks

A lot of top WR’s have drops from time to time.

Way over his head, IMO.

Escher, M.C.
I think if you look at his 2011 numbers...
he’s easily worth it.
I posted this below… but 81 receptions, 1159 yards, 5 TDs… with Tyler Palko playing in 6 games? Cassel half the others? Orton for 3?
Bowe had another Pro Bowl year.
I stand corrected
4 games and 12 snaps combined in two others

Thank you, I was well aware already.
I choose my words carefully to support my argument.
Haha yes
Nicknames I have coined:
Jamaal Charles = 'Haley's Comet'
Shaun Smith = 'Big Nasty'
Kelly Gregg = 'Old Gregg'
more than misleading unless my math and english skills are wrong
Tyler Palko playing in 6 games
Cassel half the others
Orton for 3
Cassel ‘playing’ in half the others (inferring half of the sum of all the games minus 6 for Palko, grammatically speaking): 16-6=10. 10/2=5.
Orton ‘playing’ in 3. Palko playing in 6 games (but not starting in six).
Who was the other QB then?
That’s only 14 games in which a KC QB ‘played’ in. And that total is counting games guys merely ‘played in’ as he says. Who started the other two games, and who started the other two games Palko didn’t start? Chalk at least 4 games started up to the sucky phantom QB Bowe had to endure.
According to Brad-KC…
Cassel: ‘played’ in 5 games, started??? (a joke)
Palko: played in 6 games, started 4.
Orton: played in 3 games, started?
Exactly.
In reality, Cassel started 9 games. Now how did he start in 9, but only play in 5? I guess he really is amazing.

Hopefully Bowe gets scared of the franchise tag and takes the Don's offer.
Then we turn around and slap the tag on Carr. Trade bait, or the best stable or CBs in a pass oriented league, take your pick.
This is an interesting offseason…
"saints_chiefsfan1979 is a genius" - yes, I lost a bet.
Tag Carr
Sign Orton (tell him he’ll start the season)
Trade Carr and Cassel (to be a quality back up when Bradford inevitably gets hurt again) to STL with this years 1st next years 2nd for their #2 pick.
Draft RG3. Let Orton start until RG3 is ready. Win a Super Bowl next year.

As I said below,
I can understand if Bowe wants to shop. The offense is going through another transition, the QB situation is questionable at best. If I was in Bowe’s position I would definitely like to go talk to teams like NE, GB, SF, NO, etc.

I completely disagree.
The Chiefs are very similar to the 49ers.
Mediocre QB, great run game, good defense. The Niners are a team that just turned the corner, the Chiefs are a team that has recently turned the corner. A healthy Chiefs team compares very closely to a healthy Niners team.

All the theory in the world doesn’t mean a thing until you’ve actually done it.

One tidbit we can gain from that examination is the realization that a lot of wins and losses turn on small things.

Thats just a slap in the face to really mediocre qbs. Cassel is far below that,.. and Palko is in a category of his own for possibly being the worst starter in Chiefs history
Even though Alex Smith had an ok year
Bowe signing with SF would be the same as him re-signing here to play with Cassel. I doubt NE would fork over the kind of money Bowe will want. I doubt that NO and GB could afford to bring Bowe in.

Also, safety isn't really out of the question for a "normal" base set
Both Routt and Carr have the frame to handle safety (maybe add a few pounds). Especially if the Chiefs see Lewis as up-gradable. We certainly could use the safety depth.

In a way I kind of feel sorry for Bowe.
Dude has had to put up with shitty QBs and a constantly changing offense his entire time here. Surely he wants to get on a team with an established QB and offense. You would think Carr on the other hand would take a reasonable offer and want to stay here. Romeo and Emmit Thomas helped make him what he is today. He’s got great safety help behind him and a solid friend and CB opposite of him. Plus a front 7 that is coming along nicely.
Seems like Carr should want to remain and Bowe to shop, due to the progress and overall state of the team.
"saints_chiefsfan1979 is a genius" - yes, I lost a bet.
I feel super sorry for Bowe
VJax has 3/7 season that are 1000 plus with a 4000+ yard throwing QB
Bowe has 4/5 (one was 995 w/e) 1000 plus years with a turd throwing list of QBs
Bowe is sick….
also
this is extremely overlooked
Romeo and Emmit Thomas helped make him what he is today.
That is the one saving grace in all this.
We actually have a pretty good crop of CBs for them to work with too. Flowers, Routt, Javi, Brown, etc. We’ve invested a lot of resources into getting some decent CB talent. As much as it pains me to say, Carr is expendable. Just wish we could hang on to him.

Um, no.
They’re paid based on what they’re expected to do. Teams look at past performance as an indicator of what they might do in the future, not so they can reward them for what they’ve already done.
Well it's both actually
Based on past performance Brandon Lloyd didn’t get a big contract before he signed with Denver. The last 2 years he has showed he can be a # 1 WR so this offseason he will get paid like one.

I agree it's a lot of cap space for one guy
However, I disagree we’d get similar numbers from a cadre of cheaper WRs. Bowe was far more important to our passing game than Breaston or Baldwin this year; one of those guys was a first round pick and the other a respected slot receiver. I don’t know that either could pick up the slack for losing Bowe. I see the argument for one of two things, paying a top QB that can make lesser WR more productive than they should be or paying a lot of quality receivers to bolster a weak QB. Right now, we have the players to do the second option, not the first.
Great argument
as to why a franchise QB is the cheapest way to win.
When you gotta go in the lion's den, you don't go quiet. You go in loud, kick the door down and say WHERE IS THE SONUVABITCH. -B. Billick
yeah but baldwin in theory should be as productive as bowe's first year in the league, now that he will once again in theory be healthy and playing a lot
if they let colquitt walk im going to kick someone

Can you get consecutive 1000 yard years out of cheaper WRs?
"saints_chiefsfan1979 is a genius" - yes, I lost a bet.
How would getting a better QB allow you to determine if you "Can you get consecutive 1000 yard years out of cheaper WRs? With shitty QB's"?
Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl
Do we have an extra seventh round draft pick?
For sending S Jared Page to the New England Patriots? or am I just smoking dope?
We do
But I don’t see that New England has a 7th round pick this year

Pay the man
Standing on the corner in a white Godfather hat. He drives a long black gangster Cadillac. He can steal a broads mind, man, in three or four minutes. It’s not how long you talk, brother, it’s what you put in it.
Show Bowe the money!!
Don’t pull another Carr, by tagging Bowe then have the possibility of losing him in FA. I say 7 yrs/65 million.
I think DBowe
“should” be happy with a 6 yr 50 mil contract. 20 mil guaranteed. With some bonus options built in.
Deep WR class in FA this year
Hopefully it will dilute the market.
Pioli is smart to wait and see how things play out with the franchise tag in his back-pocket if necessary. Sort of like we did with Tamba last offseason.
Nicknames I have coined:
Jamaal Charles = 'Haley's Comet'
Shaun Smith = 'Big Nasty'
Kelly Gregg = 'Old Gregg'
yeah. id be completely shocked if a deal is worked out before they announce their plans to tag him
if they let colquitt walk im going to kick someone
Team Colquitt
can we get the "open thread" started early?
I need to drop KSUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU all over Mizzwho fan’s faces.
