Dwayne Bowe Should Return To Chiefs 'One Way Or Another'

Kansas City Chiefs GM Scott Pioli had quite a bit of information in his Tuesday morning interview with 810 WHB's Border Patrol. He cleared up the confusion surrounding the Chiefs salary cap, touched on Stanford Routt and also talked about free agent Brandon Carr.

Another thing he hit on was the future of Dwayne Bowe, the Chiefs impending free agent receiver. Judging by the quote below, it's safe to assume that Bowe isn't going anywhere.

"We're hopeful to re-sign Dwayne," Pioli said. "One way or another, we would love to have Dwayne back here as a Chief. Just like Brandon [Carr]. We would like to keep the good players we have. The important part is that you have to come to an agreement."

That's about as close as we'll get to Pioli saying Bowe will be signed to a longterm deal or franchised. Whichever one it is, it's clear he's coming back.

Very different language in what he said about Bowe compared to Carr

Bowe is here to stay for sure. Carr on the other hand he uses language like “If both sides find a deal that makes sense for one another” and then here again while talking about Bowe he refers back to Carr and reiterates “The important part is that you have to come to an agreement”. Something tells me they want Carr back but aren’t close at all with where Carr wants to be financially and Pioli is basically saying the ball is now in his court.

by GenericBrand on Feb 21, 2012 2:51 PM CST reply actions

I don't disagree

but I don’t think the above quote makes the case Joel’s conclusion does.

“We’re hopeful to re-sign Dwayne,” Pioli said. "One way or another, we would love to have Dwayne back here as a Chief.
Just like Brandon [Carr].

Those words suggest that both situations are exactly (just like) the same.

“We’re hopeful to re-sign Dwayne Brandon (Carr),” Pioli said. "One way or another, we would love to have Dwayne Brandon back here as a Chief

I think the particular translation is based on the signing of Routt.

But hey, I don’t get paid to make people post :)

I didn't hear the interview but I'd like to just to hear how he said it.

Depending on how he said it you could be right that “Just like Brandon Carr” could be more tied to the first part of what he said or it could be tied to the last part.

"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"

by GenericBrand on Feb 21, 2012 3:06 PM CST up reply actions

I agree.

I think Joel is using his Routt filter. If you take what he says at face value, I see no difference between how he’s talking about the two players.

In all seriousness, though, I would be 100% in favor of signing Peyton Manning then drafting RGIII to groom behind him for a year or two.

If all goes well we’ve fixed the QB position for the next 15 years.

Laugh all you want, I'm just saying one strategy should not preclude the other from happening.

I want the Chiefs to go after Manning, but he’s a short term fix. We would be wise to start looking to acquire a QBOTF even if we do sign him so we aren’t back here in 2 years.

And obviously you understand that while Rodgers is not acquirable, both Manning and RGIII are. And since one is acquired with money and the other players and picks, the two are not mutually exclusive scenarios.

Now I don’t expect us to get Manning or Griffin. I don’t even expect Pioli to make a strong play for either one. I’d be thrilled if we ended up with either. But if you’re asking me what we should do, I think we should make a play for both.

more than misleading unless my math and english skills are wrong
Tyler Palko playing in 6 games
Cassel half the others
Orton for 3

Cassel ‘playing’ in half the others (inferring half of the sum of all the games minus 6 for Palko, grammatically speaking): 16-6=10. 10/2=5.

Orton ‘playing’ in 3. Palko playing in 6 games (but not starting in six).

Who was the other QB then?

That’s only 14 games in which a KC QB ‘played’ in. And that total is counting games guys merely ‘played in’ as he says. Who started the other two games, and who started the other two games Palko didn’t start? Chalk at least 4 games started up to the sucky phantom QB Bowe had to endure.

According to Brad-KC…

Cassel: ‘played’ in 5 games, started??? (a joke)
Palko: played in 6 games, started 4.
Orton: played in 3 games, started?

Exactly.

In reality, Cassel started 9 games. Now how did he start in 9, but only play in 5? I guess he really is amazing.

Hopefully Bowe gets scared of the franchise tag and takes the Don's offer.

Then we turn around and slap the tag on Carr. Trade bait, or the best stable or CBs in a pass oriented league, take your pick.

In a way I kind of feel sorry for Bowe.

Dude has had to put up with shitty QBs and a constantly changing offense his entire time here. Surely he wants to get on a team with an established QB and offense. You would think Carr on the other hand would take a reasonable offer and want to stay here. Romeo and Emmit Thomas helped make him what he is today. He’s got great safety help behind him and a solid friend and CB opposite of him. Plus a front 7 that is coming along nicely.

Seems like Carr should want to remain and Bowe to shop, due to the progress and overall state of the team.

There’s a reason Peyton Manning can make scrubs look like all stars.

by ChiefWarPaint on Feb 21, 2012 4:11 PM CST up reply actions

really what does that have to do with anything?

Indy WR’s should be payed way less cause Manning is throwing to them?

by Steve_Chiefs on Feb 21, 2012 4:15 PM CST up reply actions

Meaning a Good QB makes a WR

If you have a bad QB, and your WR still produces like Bowe does, that speaks volumes on how good that WR is.

Give him Manning, or Brady, or Brees and he’d probably be an All Pro every year.

by ChiefWarPaint on Feb 21, 2012 4:23 PM CST up reply actions

Except how much better would it actually make Bowe

cuz he cant catch the balls that are thrown straight to him

by badassz1987 on Feb 21, 2012 4:26 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe if he had a QB who could throw the ball straight at him more often

He’d have better practice at it, and wouldn’t drop the ball so much.

His whole career he’s always had to make a play on a badly thrown ball, maybe that’s exactly the problem. If you were Bowe would you ever expect an accurate football to be coming your way?

he's worth as much as the other top WRs

I guess I am being dense

Are WR’s worth 1/12th of cap at all when you can get similar numbers from a cadre of cheaper WR’s?

by Steve_Chiefs on Feb 21, 2012 4:06 PM CST up reply actions

But you have to remeber how our QB situation has been the whole ime Bowe has been here

He definitely deserves the payday coming his way

He was paid as a 1st round pick

I don’t see that paying for past performance is a good thing to do

by Steve_Chiefs on Feb 21, 2012 4:11 PM CST up reply actions

And with that thinking we'll lose Bowe

And our entire offense will fall completely apart.

by ChiefWarPaint on Feb 21, 2012 4:12 PM CST up reply actions

I agree sorta

But what would Bowe look like if he wasn’t the focal point of our passing game for the last five years.

by Steve_Chiefs on Feb 21, 2012 4:16 PM CST up reply actions

He wasn't the focal point for 5 years, we still had Gonzo

And being the focal point doesn’t make Bowe look worse, it means that he’s who the defense focuses on besides the running game and he sees more double teams. Yet still produces.

We’ve already seen what happens when he’s not the focal point and we rely on other WRs like against the Donkeys, we can’t get crap done.

Targets when Bowe is on the Field

Chiefs offense

2008 – Bowe 16%
2009 – Bowe 11.5%
2010 – Bowe 13%
2011 – Bowe 14%

by Steve_Chiefs on Feb 21, 2012 4:30 PM CST up reply actions

Is that targets, or catches?

And what do teh other WRs look like?

"saints_chiefsfan1979 is a genius" - yes, I lost a bet.

by Tomahawk29 on Feb 21, 2012 4:33 PM CST up reply actions

in 2011

Breaston was targeted 11% of his snaps played
Baldwin was targeted 12.6% of his snaps played

they combined for 1039 yards

by Steve_Chiefs on Feb 21, 2012 4:43 PM CST up reply actions

So

you have ONE player with only 2-3% more targets but 150 more yards than two players combined. lol how do you not see his production?

by Brad-KC on Feb 21, 2012 4:45 PM CST up reply actions

Bowe often faced the opponent's best corner

or best corner + a LB
or best corner + a safety

You have to consider that in your evaluation…

That's nice

And he produces with crap at QB, and when we’re usually last in the league at passing the football per game.

by ChiefWarPaint on Feb 21, 2012 4:33 PM CST up reply actions

okay but

A point I tried to make last year regards Charles, having one player generating 25% of your offensive output is a bad thing if that player goes down.

by Steve_Chiefs on Feb 21, 2012 4:39 PM CST up reply actions

Without a threat like Bowe

Teams can play run D on us even more. Remember in 2010 when Cassel and Bowe had all those TDs? Bowe was able to keep defenses honest.

by Brad-KC on Feb 21, 2012 4:44 PM CST up reply actions

Or Charles did

not trying to argue against your point completely :)

Um, no.

They’re paid based on what they’re expected to do. Teams look at past performance as an indicator of what they might do in the future, not so they can reward them for what they’ve already done.

Well it's both actually

Based on past performance Brandon Lloyd didn’t get a big contract before he signed with Denver. The last 2 years he has showed he can be a # 1 WR so this offseason he will get paid like one.

I agree it's a lot of cap space for one guy

However, I disagree we’d get similar numbers from a cadre of cheaper WRs. Bowe was far more important to our passing game than Breaston or Baldwin this year; one of those guys was a first round pick and the other a respected slot receiver. I don’t know that either could pick up the slack for losing Bowe. I see the argument for one of two things, paying a top QB that can make lesser WR more productive than they should be or paying a lot of quality receivers to bolster a weak QB. Right now, we have the players to do the second option, not the first.

For sending S Jared Page to the New England Patriots? or am I just smoking dope?

by xXFlashXx on Feb 21, 2012 4:03 PM CST reply actions

We do

But I don’t see that New England has a 7th round pick this year

Show Bowe the money!!

Don’t pull another Carr, by tagging Bowe then have the possibility of losing him in FA. I say 7 yrs/65 million.

by ArrowheadS on Feb 21, 2012 4:20 PM CST reply actions

I think DBowe

“should” be happy with a 6 yr 50 mil contract. 20 mil guaranteed. With some bonus options built in.

by Brad-KC on Feb 21, 2012 4:52 PM CST reply actions

Deep WR class in FA this year

Hopefully it will dilute the market.

Pioli is smart to wait and see how things play out with the franchise tag in his back-pocket if necessary. Sort of like we did with Tamba last offseason.

Nicknames I have coined:

Jamaal Charles = 'Haley's Comet'
Shaun Smith = 'Big Nasty'
Kelly Gregg = 'Old Gregg'
