One move changes all of that. Short of Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning is the prize of the off-season. This story is even overshadowing the Super Bowl of all things. This is the big fish. If the Chiefs were to get him, they instantly become not only the favorites in the AFC West but guaranteed of several prime time games. The reality is that not only would they instantly sell a million of anything remotely team-related, but any and all ill feelings would dissipate immediately. A PR nightmare needs a salve that heals all wounds. Peyton is that salve.

Maybe a qualified QB could help chose one ;)

He probably won't be released until just before his roster bonus is due.

No reason for the Colts to release him much earlier than that. Luck could get in a car wreck next week.

Then they'd get RGIII

Manning is done in Indy if anything else, he’s tired of Irsay’s B.S., but the B.S. is worth the $28mil. wait.

Also, I’m not saying he’ll never play again…that’s TBD based on medical.

At least that’s what I think. They’re waiting until after Eli plays.

RG3 is less of a prospect.

And they might decide to keep Manning over him. Either way, there is no benefit to cutting Manning before they have to.

I disagree too but its all dependent how you look at at.

Peyton fits with 20 other teams because he would be an improvement over 20 of the teams QB. But those 20 teams aren’t a fit for Peyton. That list is probably 4-5 teams and the Chiefs would probably be top 3 in appeal.

I have heard the Peyton news

On 5 networks now. Every one mentioned some places where Peyton might end up. Not one mentioned the Chiefs. There has been at least one Peyton post per day here, (Or one QB post that turns into a Peyton post) all heavily commented, but everyone outside of rabid, wishful thinking fans know that the Chiefs are not one of the serious players.

And don’t talk about cap space. The Chiefs are ecstatic that there is no salary floor until 2013, and I believe they will keep their payroll low while they still can. (As they did last year) This is just simply not going to happen.

Agree with your disagreement.

Several teams have the need at QB, but not all of them have much cap space. Of those that do, not all are attractive destinations. The Browns would probably love to sign Manning, but he probably wants to go to a team more ready to compete for a Super Bowl.

In terms of teams with cap space, a need at QB, and the type of roster that’s otherwise ready to compete for a Super Bowl, only the 49ers would arguably be a better fit for Manning than the Chiefs.

How would it leverage the future of our organization

If we sign him without giving away draft picks?

We could still fill the holes in this team through the draft/FA. The only difference would be we’d have a franchise QB to contend with for a few years while looking for a young QB to develop.

I keep seeing that same sentiment around here and it blows my mind

People thinking we cripple ourselves long term by picking up free agent Manning.

That’s the perfect scenario. Win now with an established future HOF QB. Meanwhile, draft your future starter and develop him (and keep a legitimate QB coach if / when Zorn leaves the position! – so the youngsters actually develop).

It's no fun if I have to explain it.

I had my back operated on by the supposed best doctor in the country according to references and was told I was good being I was 17 and healthy and would have zero problems, didnt stop me from having to have another even more major surgery 4 months later and now 11 years later not a day goes by that I dont have some complication from a fused back whether its being bed ridden for up to a week or sudden pains that bring me to my knees feeling like someones stabbing me with a Bowie knife.

If he comes back I hope Im wrong but I just have a feeling this will not end well for him.

If it was that simple, sure...

but you know Pioli & Co are not going to want to spend a bunch of money if they have the QB situation taken care of in the short-term. They’ll be trying to get off cheap and find the next Tom Brady instead of drafting someone with better odds at being the number one.

I have this terrible fear that bring Peyton Manning here would make the last half of the 10s look like the last half of the 90s as far as the Chiefs’ QB situation goes.

correction:

He’s re-structured his contract in the past to go get other players.
Re-structuring most often means converting salary (dollars that count against the cap) into bonuses (that can be front loaded or back loaded into another year) so that the team can free up enough cap room to sign whatever other players they are trying to sign.

I’m not saying Peyton is a money grubbing whore or anything.. just thought someone should steer you in the right direction about Mannings “pay-cuts”

U think peyton manning wants to play for money? R u that stupid? The guy has more money than he could spend in 3 lifetimes and u think he wants to risk his health and safety to make more money?? That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. He’s been listening to people and the media tell him all season that he might not be able to play football again and that he shuld just hang his cleats up. Not to mention his brother could possibly win his second Super Bowl while he only has 1. Whether the giants win or not, Peyton is hungrier now than he’s ever been and if he is fully recovered than there is no reason in hell y the chiefs shouldn’t make a run at him. Ur argument abt him just wanting money is downright dumb… I understand getting a young qb in the organization but we can afford someone like Peyton right now and we wouldn’t have to give up any draft picks or anything.. Giving up what it takes to get to the second or first pick is mortgaging ur future on an unknown and unproven player at the nfl level

by njchiefs29 on Feb 2, 2012 8:40 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

If it wasn't about money Manning would defer his 28 million bonus

by SoCalChief17 on Feb 2, 2012 8:45 PM CST up reply actions

Pretty sure he cant...

NFL doesnt have “No trade clauses” I have never seen a contract that allows a player to block anything. The only thing that keeps some teams from trading is if it is the last year of his current contract and he tells them he wont sign an extension with them.

What a year! At least we have the Royals... Oh Wait!

by KSU-Chief on Feb 2, 2012 8:47 PM CST up reply actions

I'm nearly positive you can put no trade clauses in contracts

Either way if he defers the 28 million I’m sure his agent would negotiate a no trade clause in return. I just googled it and a few players came up. I’m sure it’s in more, but there aren’t many star players who are actually traded.

by SoCalChief17 on Feb 2, 2012 8:54 PM CST up reply actions

Why would Manning

want to hurt his next team by having them trade draft choices and/or players to get him, when he can just go to whatever team he wants, and all they have to give up is money?

Even under your theory of a no trade clause, that’s still not near as good as outright free agency.

I’m saying he’s going to be a free agent either way, and that he wants to get paid by the most competitive team available. He’s not going to go to a dysfunctional team like Oakland, and I don’t see him going to DC where he has to play his brother.

I’m not talking at all about trading for him. He’s going straight into free agency because it’s the most logical thing for him to do.

Deal with it. Get Adblock, or use the mobile site. This is the first time I’ve been on my comp all day and it’s really not that big of a deal.

Back on topic…
Obviously other teams are going to be interested, but it’s going to be the team that throws the most cash at him that wins. And I don’t mean a team like the Rams, but competitive teams.

Chiefs
Cardinals
Seahawks
Redskins (maybe)
49ers

I left the Jets off the list because they won’t be able to afford him (at least I don’t think so). The only other team I can see beating the Chiefs out on that list would be the 49ers. I’m not sure how their cap situation is looking at the moment though.

I'm not interested in bringing Manning to KC.

What are we as Chiefs fans constantly complaining about? The fact that we have not drafted/developed our own quarterback EVER. As awesome as Peyton is, I don’t see the sense in paying a king’s ransom for a QB that’s only going to be around another 5 seasons, maximum. Sure, it’d be a huge deal, and yeah, adding him would make us contenders…but the window of opportunity to win a championship with him is too small. Let’s focus on continuing to improve our roster overall rather than chasing Manning.

First, we aren’t sure if he’s ever gonna see the field again, much less at his former level.

Other than the QB position, we have far more talent on our team than he ever had in Indy. Combine that with the large amount of cap space we have, I don’t see why we wouldn’t be one of the most likely teams to sign him.

Right on guys

But I am very skeptical as to his playing condition right now and I don’t believe that the Chiefs are a team that can go out and sign any/every FA they want.

He’s a huge risk money-wise and though we all agree that a decent QB will do a heck of a lot of good, I’m not convinced he’s our guy. That money can be used in better ways IMO.

by workingmansdead on Feb 2, 2012 9:12 PM CST up reply actions

You make it sound like we can't use draft picks on some of those positions we need to patch up

And that FA is the only way we’ll ever be able to fill those holes.

Pay Manning cash money. Spend draft picks for O Line, ILB, S (depth), NT

Win-win?

I think many teams will go after Manning. He's a top 10 qb in the history of the game.

And everything does look great in KC, except the guys up front protecting the fused neck. I think we can work on that.

Jets O Line was great. Has been for the last few years.

And they’re declining rapidly. But probably 2 holes to fill with younger bodies and they’re right back up in the top 3-5 in the league if the youngsters pan out.

Mannings style of play doesn't require a great oline.

That and Drs have cleared his neck injury as healed and ready to play again and no Dr. would say that if he was at any greater risk to re-injure it.

I feel like this is very similiar to the debate we had about Moeaki vs. Gonk/Graham.

For example, Jacob Tamme looked like a stud last year with Manning throwing to him, Clark looked God-awful this year with Collins/Painter/Orlovsky throwing to him.

Eh, you take it too personal

I told you once that you were better off not reading the replies. Just write and don’t reply.

Do you think other writers really pay attention to the responses from readers? If they did, they wouldn’t get much sleep. Case in point Whitlock or Keitz, on the radio.

People just see you get riled up and keep going.

It’s all good, just let it go.

Write and don't read the replies?

That’s like telling an alcoholic not to drink. ALL writers pay attention to responses. The responses are the REASON we write. We want to know what others think. We don’t, however, like to be attacked and painted as inconsequential in the discussion because of our point of view. Whitlock has made an art out of having that done but I will bet you that he wishes he was loved by his readership rather than thought of as a freak. Crying on Nick Wrights interview when he left KC was real but not for the reason that most think.

Really?
ALL writers pay attention to responses.

Not true. Ask Chris Chase on yahoo or Whitlock (as a few examples of criticized writers). Whitlock’s even said he doesn’t care about responses to his article.

but I will bet you that he wishes he was loved by his readership rather than thought of as a freak.

Speculation. He also could realize that the way his readers react is why he makes all his money.

Crying on Nick Wrights interview when he left KC was real but not for the reason that most think.

Because you have the inside scoop directly from Whitlock.

Puh-leez, you’re assumming all writers think the way you do.. The difference is you wrote the above like it’s factual instead of just taking personal responsibility and saying it’s how you feel.

Not yet...still in the process

will probably have another steroid/cortisone shot next week. If that doesn’t cure it, then surgery. I do know a few people that have had the procedure done though. They say all is well, but they’re not playing in the NFL either.

It's a well written article Matt.

I’m going to give you credit for this one because I have been quite harsh on some of your previous articles.

I don’t think Manning would come to KC but if he did I would be ecstatic. Regardless of what anyone says about Brady, Rogers, Marino or even Elway, I will always hold fast to my opinion that Peyton Manning was/is the best QB to ever play the position. The numbers may not back it up, but no one changed a game or ran a consistent offense like he did. Not to mention the very average talent around him.

we have the money. We have the talent. We may very well go into the season with protection problems, but if the Colts cut him lose, I’d say we have as good a chance as any other team.

Its IDEAL...

I really think the only teams that make sense is KC and SF….and honestly, i dont know if SF will pull the trigger when they just went to the NFC Championship with Alex Smith and no weapons….I dont think they are looking to upgrade the QB position, they are looking to get some better WRs…NFC also means he may have to face Eli in the playoffs….

AFC East is out…he only has about 2-4 years left….he wants the easiest path to the playoffs each year. Being in a division with the Pats and Jets is NOT an easy path…he wants a Super Bowl before he retires, so he should want to lean towards a division that is unsettled …AFC West is THAT division…Denver just won it with an 8-8 record…..
Ive heard others ay Washington…no way…thats the same division as Eli…mark my words, the only way Eli and Peyton want to face eachother is in a Super Bowl…THAT would be AMAZING…

If he came to KC, with the weapons we have on the roster RIGHT NOW

so your tellin me theres a chance

make a trade Pioli, Peyton please be healthy, so we can get Luck

One move changes all of that. Short of Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning is the prize of the off-season. This story is even overshadowing the Super Bowl of all things. This is the big fish. If the Chiefs were to get him, they instantly become not only the favorites in the AFC West but guaranteed of several prime time games. The reality is that not only would they instantly sell a million of anything remotely team-related, but any and all ill feelings would dissipate immediately. A PR nightmare needs a salve that heals all wounds. Peyton is that salve

In nomeni parti et fili spiritus sancti

by saints_chiefsfan1979 on Feb 3, 2012 3:28 AM CST reply actions

How might Peyton narrow down his choices?

AFC or NFC… I think he’d choose AFC. NFC is Eli’s competition and Peyton knows the AFC well already.

Division… Would help to be a relatively weak division, one he could win every year: AFC West or AFC South. Would Manning go to a division rival? I think he respects Indy fans and the Colts as an organization too much. AFC West it is.

Chargers – Rivers
Broncos – Possibility. Team on the rise.
Chiefs – Possibility. Lots of cap room.
Raiders – Ha. Haha. Hahahaha. Probably not. Plus they’re stuck with Palmer.

I’d say the Chiefs are probably pretty appealing.
