Irsay just groaned.
Good luck putting a positive spin on this one Jim.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
I guarantee
He’ll want him to restructure his contract to a cap friendly number, then flip him to the highest bidder.
…and Peyton will tell him to go eat a dick.
by craig in calgary on Feb 2, 2012 4:52 PM CST up reply actions
This was my original thought, but word is he can't.
Contracts can’t be changed until after the start of the new league year, which is after the 28 million is due.
Manning will be released, and you need to supply only cash to get him.

At that point
I’m thinking he doesn’t go to the highest bidder, he’ll go to the team he has the best fit.
I know I’ve been on Pioli lately, but could he be holding his cards close to the chest? Sign Peyton and then let him “chose” his OC? I’ve never been called a homer before, but of all the QB-needing teams, I truly believe the Chiefs are the best fit.

Meaning
Manning doesn’t want money, he wants to win, AND beat the Colts (On our schedule)

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
After they draft Luck #1?
I doubt that. I know you hate the idea of him coming to K.C., but he’s not going to stay in Indy.

Well, that would be the team that's the best fit.
A lot of Peyton’s success comes from his familiarity and rapport with his receivers and line.

Absolutely.
Colts’ only difficulty in that situation would be getting Manning’s eventual replacement. They re-build their team in three years through the draft, but then are stuck with low draft picks and no franchise QB…..ha, sounds familiar don’t it?

Why would Irsay do that, when what they did with Peyton (started right away) worked out great?
Add in that Luck’s supposedly the most “ready” QB to come along since PeyPey, and that would not make sense at all as their move.
If they thought they were ready to compete for a SB, sure. But they’re not. ESPECIALLY if they spend big money on keeping Peyton and drafting Luck and lose some of their other FA’s…

It wasn’t that Peyton would never be a functioning member of society again, but that he might not be able to make the NFL throws even when he’s “physically” healthy.

Tyler Palko is also cleared to play
I don’t know why this is such a big deal. Peyton has been practicing. He’s been cleared since November. The whole point is, sure, he’s healthy enough to play, but he doesn’t have all of the feeling nor all of the strength back in his arm, mainly in the tricep. What use is the guy if he can’t make the throws he needs to make?

Don’t get your hopes up.
by Chief Willie Wildcat on Feb 2, 2012 5:12 PM CST up reply actions
And sorry I was under the assumption we all understood the season doesn't start until September...
Which happens to be 8 months away. If he is cleared now and people who “know” what they’re talking about say he will be ready I tend to listen to them.
I don't believe anyone said he'll be ready
So Manning is not "back." This may not even qualify is particularly new information. He doesn’t know yet when or if his arm will perform at an acceptable level. One source told Mort it could take until May. Left unsaid is that it might not happen at all.

Manning said himself that the doctors Said he is...
On point, cleared, and ready to go in his interview two days ago. So I’ll take not only his word, but his doctors.
Are you even paying attention to what you're saying?
You’re probably healthy enough to play. I’m healthy enough to play. That doesn’t mean either of us are any friggin good!
Which brings us back to my original post. Even Tyler Palko is cleared (healthy enough) to play. And that doesn’t mean jack shit as far as performance goes.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
When Manning says "ready to go" for next season...
I take that as he expects to be 100% meaning neck is healthy and arm strength is good. Maybe it’s just me, but I doubt he plans to “be ready to go” if he has the noodle arm of Palko. Manning being the player he is I doubt he would do himself or another team the disservice of returning if he didn’t have an appropriate amount of arm strength. But I’m not Manning nor will pretend to be a doctor.
I wasn't referring to the pro football talk article either which doesn't really have any actual info...
And even the in the ESPN article
though optimistic, no one says Peyton WILL be back.
by Chief Willie Wildcat on Feb 2, 2012 5:44 PM CST up reply actions

That usually happens when players get injured. Every player is optimistic that they WILL be back.

I could play RT and he’d throw for 4,000 yards. Name one good tackle he’s ever had. I can’t
by craig in calgary on Feb 2, 2012 5:08 PM CST up reply actions
4000 with Charles putting up 1700+ rushing too.
Can you imagine what Bowe would be capable of with Manning?
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
Can you imagine the hardon Peyton Manning would get the night before the Indi game with Jacob Lacey lined up with Bowe?
Bowe might break the single game mark.

And Charles hardon when thinking about running against 6 man fronts all year.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
Gotta protect that neck, you don't want to take chances
also imagine Manning with our weapons and actual time, then Charles behind an actual O line. Holy Mother of God scary offense

This
He hasn’t had a run game since Faulk. And the rest of the team sucked horribly then.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
Well Edge in his prime was pretty damn good.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
this IS big news
Reading the details, it seems clear he’ll be ready to play.
I also agree it’s not about money, but about winning.
Which makes KC as good of an option as ANY team he’ll have to choose from… that being said, I still think it’s a looong shot…

Exactly
He just made 26M$ to stand on the sideline on Sundays and watch a couple off the street QBs tank everything he built.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
What kind of contract would Peyton commad?
4 years $60M?
by craig in calgary on Feb 2, 2012 5:15 PM CST reply actions
Honestly, that's low
He was getting ~23 million per year in Indy. Assume that’s a hometown discount… we’d be lucky to pay that low, considering his potential health issues if he keeps getting hit in the backfield.
fully healthy? yeah, or maybe 3/$60
to be more specific: a lot

You also have to think that Jacob Tamme and Jeff Saturday come with Manning as well

then a good #2 TE
his blocking is not shabby, and he’ll tear you to shreds if you put a linebacker on him. He and Moeaki in a two TE set could be a LOT of trouble

No need to sign a wide receiver unless Bowe walks.
How about this? Franchise Carr, sign Manning and if Bowe walks you could sign Garcon or Wayne.

sign Manning = Bowe not going anywhere

No and no.
Hudson is fine and Manning could make Jake O’Connell look as good as Tamme.

I’ll have more on the blog, and who knows, but sounded to me today like Pioli/Romeo want to be aggressive in improving the QB sitch.

I'm sure whoever gives Manning a contract will work him out first, and make it necessary for him to pass a physical just like anybody else.

At least that sounds logical
everyone else is already ordering confetti for the Super Bowl parade downtown because we may have the slightest chance at getting a quarterback who only had 3 years left in the tank BEFORE neck surgery.

Yeah, any new team Manning goes to would have a hoard of fans with unBELIEVEable expectations.

I think Romeo learned his lesson in Clevland about trying to win with a QB that made the probowl, but anyone with eyes can see he is not good enough.

If the Colts thought Manning could resume his career, why would they draft Luck?
Given the flat salary cap, trade down and draft Matt Kalil or a great defensive player. People don’t realize that if the Colts don’t want him, it’s because he’s about done.
Because it'd be awful tough to pass up on a QBotF.
If Manning CAN play and they re-sign him, then when he’s actually ready to retire the Colts will likely be stuck near the bottom of the draft with no franchise QB prospect.

How long have you been a KC fan?
It’s hard getting a franchise QB. They have a chance to draft a guy who will be theirs for the next 15 years. They’re not going to pass on that, because Manning might be good for another two or three years while they’re rebuilding.

chief willie the chiefs haven't done shit until they brought montana in, if able to go u
got to take a shot at manning, gets old having a qb that mediocre at best. Time to win now and a great qb is all the chiefs are missing.
