Irsay just groaned.

Good luck putting a positive spin on this one Jim.

I guarantee

He’ll want him to restructure his contract to a cap friendly number, then flip him to the highest bidder.
…and Peyton will tell him to go eat a dick.

by craig in calgary on Feb 2, 2012 4:52 PM CST up reply actions

This was my original thought, but word is he can't.

Contracts can’t be changed until after the start of the new league year, which is after the 28 million is due.

Manning will be released, and you need to supply only cash to get him.

The views expressed by craig in calgary do not necessarily represent the views of all Canadians.

by saskwatch on Feb 2, 2012 4:55 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

At that point

I’m thinking he doesn’t go to the highest bidder, he’ll go to the team he has the best fit.

I know I’ve been on Pioli lately, but could he be holding his cards close to the chest? Sign Peyton and then let him “chose” his OC? I’ve never been called a homer before, but of all the QB-needing teams, I truly believe the Chiefs are the best fit.

Meaning

Manning doesn’t want money, he wants to win, AND beat the Colts (On our schedule)

Well, that would be the team that's the best fit.

A lot of Peyton’s success comes from his familiarity and rapport with his receivers and line.

There is no way they draft Luck to sit him

Why would Irsay do that, when what they did with Peyton (started right away) worked out great?

Add in that Luck’s supposedly the most “ready” QB to come along since PeyPey, and that would not make sense at all as their move.

If they thought they were ready to compete for a SB, sure. But they’re not. ESPECIALLY if they spend big money on keeping Peyton and drafting Luck and lose some of their other FA’s…

That would make zero sense under the circumstances

I know he still needs to regain his strength in his arm

But if Vegas put a line on him coming back this year or not… I’m not betting against Peyton effing Manning.

by Sam D on Feb 2, 2012 4:57 PM CST up reply actions

The way I was reading things

It wasn’t that Peyton would never be a functioning member of society again, but that he might not be able to make the NFL throws even when he’s “physically” healthy.

Tyler Palko is also cleared to play

I don’t know why this is such a big deal. Peyton has been practicing. He’s been cleared since November. The whole point is, sure, he’s healthy enough to play, but he doesn’t have all of the feeling nor all of the strength back in his arm, mainly in the tricep. What use is the guy if he can’t make the throws he needs to make?

by Chief Willie Wildcat on Feb 2, 2012 4:57 PM CST reply actions

Thanks Sherlock

glad I typed all of that out for you to have one little piece to dissect.

by Chief Willie Wildcat on Feb 2, 2012 5:06 PM CST up reply actions

What else would you like sir?

As I said he is cleared to fully return to playing football. Arm strength is the only issue now and rehabilitation is going “great” and could likely be 100% by May…

by jsChiefs23 on Feb 2, 2012 5:09 PM CST up reply actions

And sorry I was under the assumption we all understood the season doesn't start until September...

Which happens to be 8 months away. If he is cleared now and people who “know” what they’re talking about say he will be ready I tend to listen to them.

by jsChiefs23 on Feb 2, 2012 5:14 PM CST up reply actions

I don't believe anyone said he'll be ready
So Manning is not "back." This may not even qualify is particularly new information. He doesn’t know yet when or if his arm will perform at an acceptable level. One source told Mort it could take until May. Left unsaid is that it might not happen at all.

by Chief Willie Wildcat on Feb 2, 2012 5:22 PM CST up reply actions

Manning said himself that the doctors Said he is...

On point, cleared, and ready to go in his interview two days ago. So I’ll take not only his word, but his doctors.

by jsChiefs23 on Feb 2, 2012 5:29 PM CST up reply actions

Are you even paying attention to what you're saying?

You’re probably healthy enough to play. I’m healthy enough to play. That doesn’t mean either of us are any friggin good!
Which brings us back to my original post. Even Tyler Palko is cleared (healthy enough) to play. And that doesn’t mean jack shit as far as performance goes.

When Manning says "ready to go" for next season...

I take that as he expects to be 100% meaning neck is healthy and arm strength is good. Maybe it’s just me, but I doubt he plans to “be ready to go” if he has the noodle arm of Palko. Manning being the player he is I doubt he would do himself or another team the disservice of returning if he didn’t have an appropriate amount of arm strength. But I’m not Manning nor will pretend to be a doctor.

by jsChiefs23 on Feb 2, 2012 5:50 PM CST up reply actions

It would be amazing to bring him in

With Manning we could go OT/ILB in the first two rounds and just prepare to dominate the NFL. I think Bowe would come back at a discount to play with Manning leaving us money to get Carr back

Reading the details, it seems clear he’ll be ready to play.

I also agree it’s not about money, but about winning.

Which makes KC as good of an option as ANY team he’ll have to choose from… that being said, I still think it’s a looong shot…

No need to sign a wide receiver unless Bowe walks.

How about this? Franchise Carr, sign Manning and if Bowe walks you could sign Garcon or Wayne.

If the Colts thought Manning could resume his career, why would they draft Luck?

Given the flat salary cap, trade down and draft Matt Kalil or a great defensive player. People don’t realize that if the Colts don’t want him, it’s because he’s about done.

by Dagda on Feb 2, 2012 5:47 PM CST reply actions

Because it'd be awful tough to pass up on a QBotF.

If Manning CAN play and they re-sign him, then when he’s actually ready to retire the Colts will likely be stuck near the bottom of the draft with no franchise QB prospect.

How long have you been a KC fan?

It’s hard getting a franchise QB. They have a chance to draft a guy who will be theirs for the next 15 years. They’re not going to pass on that, because Manning might be good for another two or three years while they’re rebuilding.
