Chiefs Coaching Staff Should Be Done 'Soon'

We may have some news on the Kansas City Chiefs coaching soon. Really soon.

Romeo Crennel talked with Soren Petro and Co. on 810 WHB this afternoon and Crennel said he hopes to have the staff complete "soon".

"One of those things that pops up with Bill Muir retiring so now I have to extend my search because I need an offensive line coach," Crennel said. "We are going to work through it but I think relatively soon we'll be able to tell everybody who we have and how we're gonna go forward."

As for a timetable, Crennel said he hoped to get some things done over the weekend. So we might be hearing about the Chiefs coaching staff very soon.

To review, the Chiefs are still looking for an offensive coordinator, offensive line and receivers coach.

he indicated that he’d like to get into coaching sooner rather than later. Of course, he needs to start as an assistant line coach before being given the whole ball of wax.

by 12t on Feb 2, 2012 5:11 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, I don't see why this couldn't be true.

O line coach is already technically an assistant. If the HC and OC think he can handle it, why not?

Because he's never done it before?

There is a lot more to being the OL coach than just teaching technique. He has to develop strategy, help with gameplanning, manage various personalities, etc. Just because he was a great player doesn’t mean he’d be a great coach, especially on his first day on the job.

alright, the problem here is everyone (or even anyone, really) thinking that the Coaching Staff is ever "done"

it’s never “done” but rather it’s a “work in progress” … new coaches in, old coaches out, constantly churning the coaching staff roster and, of course, the continual search for new talent

this, then, becomes the central and motivating issue as to whether the organization addresses these coaching staff needs thru free agency or the draft … and of course should the answers lie in the draft process itself, that will beg the question of “value” at our position, and if we’re better off drafting an OC early on or an OL coach and “settling” for an OC from a lower round

obviously this draft is full of OC prospects, but to rely on an unproven talent is a dangerous game, and it might be wise for the Chiefs to address this need in free agency instead, thus allowing the team to add proven talent and achieve maximum value at the same time

see, the fallacy is in thinking that one coach can carry the team

that’s a misguided perception that usually ends up in failure, look at the Rams: they got their HCotF but at what price?

no, I honestly and sincerely believe that a team needs to fill other holes in the coaching staff first, and THEN go after that HCotF type later on … and there’s always another guy out there next year, and the year after … the worst thing we could do at this juncture would be to rely on some young, untested rookie to do everything by himself without the protection and help afforded by other coaches on the team

not sure I completely agree with that line of thinking ...

… it might be best to actually trade back a few spots, as deep as the coaching talent is this year, perhaps get a few extra coaches to develop along the way, and even a few extra picks that we could use for next year’s coaching draft

Alright, if we hypothetically only habe three options for OC, what's your vote:

1) Al Saunders
2) Jim Zorn
3) Hue Jackson

by Another Successful Tedford QB on Feb 2, 2012 3:26 PM CST reply actions

Zorn

Chiefs didn’t let him interview with the Bears. Any new OC will bring his own staff including QB coach so that move didn’t make any sense unless he is the front runner for the position. Zorn WANTS the job. He knows the talent we have and how the Chiefs work. Looking at his resume, he is a winner. All evidence points to Zorn.

Actually, I think the HC would be making the final decisions on the staff, not the OC...

Not sure that a new OC could demand the organization and HC to release a QB coach that has spent the least year with the GM’s prize pig.

Also, the chiefs could easily have denied the Bears the right to interview just based on the fact that

Zorn’s move would be lateral and he’s under contract in KC. Unless CHI wanted to trade something they’re just SoL.

Al Saunders.

Seems to fit into the time frame perfectly:

Last week, Bill Muir: “I’m not retiring”
Yesterday afternoon, Bill Muir: “I’m retiring”
Yesterday evening, Bob Gretz: “Al Saunders met with Crennel and the Chiefs this week”
Today, Crennel: “Relatively soon we’ll be able to tell everybody who we have and how we’re gonna go forward.”

But I doubt we’d be poaching an OC from either the Giants or Pats. It would be a position coach to promote. Not sure I’d be too keen on that move, considering we could have Saunders again, or even Hue Jackson. Or just promote our own position guy…
