Sorry to add fuel to the fire...

but this really hurt. I just won’t believe he couldn’t have played at least as well as B Rich. He saved what was left of the Chargers season. Just plain stupidity and spite on Haley’s part.

Pioli Cut Him, Not Haley

Muir said he was practicing like crap, and when he played in limited time for the Chiefs, he played like crap. Not sure what kind of “stupidity and spite” Haley exhibited in this case.

Wow

link me one, JUST ONE STORY, where Muir said anything about Gaither’s practice or playing habits.

by Chief Willie Wildcat on Feb 2, 2012 2:40 AM CST up reply actions

Muir did say

he lacked the explosiveness he showed at Baltimore. Maybe they ultimately cut him to bring up Mims, but Richardson is like Palko, you see enough crap and it’s time to see something different.

by Chief Willie Wildcat on Feb 2, 2012 2:45 AM CST up reply actions

This is what was said
“I think basically the situation was pretty clear cut,” Muir said. “Even though technically he was 100 percent healthy, I guess technically, physically I didn’t see that as the offensive line coach/coordinator. I didn’t see the physicalness or the explosiveness he had when he played at Batlimore.”

Interesting. The Star reported previously that Gaither said he was healthy, and now the Chiefs say he was “technically” healthy, so maybe there are varying interpretations of exactly what healthy is.

Anyway, Muir went on to indicate that what Gaither lacked physically and explosively wasn’t the sole determining factor in his release.

“But there were other circumstances involved in it as you manage your roster at this time of year,” Muir said. “So it wasn’t all about, ‘Can he play?’, ’Can’t he play?’ or ’Who’s better?’, it was a tactical decision we made.”

To me, that says they think that David Mims has a bright future

but just wasn’t ready to play yet.

Who knows what the next OL coach will think?

No idea

but after so many false starts, holds, complete whiffs that lead to sacks, and ultimately drive kills Richardson committed, I wish Gaither had gotten a fair shake.

by Chief Willie Wildcat on Feb 2, 2012 2:49 AM CST up reply actions

I think most fans agree with that senitment.

I don’t Barry Richardson is a terrible player all of the time.

Maybe adjustment in scheme and coaching will help him long term. This coming year would be his third year starting and some players really start to come into their own in their third year starting.

It is time to bring in some competition at the RT spot though. Drafting a tackle high is a great idea IMO, but bringing in a FA wouldn’t be to shabby either.

If they don’t go tackle high in the draft, I think that will translate to how high the team is on David Mims long term, that kid has a bright future if he can learn some footwork and technique.

The blocking schemes were a problem this year

Bill Muir moving up to the booth spelled disaster for the line and Pat Perles was in over his head handling the duties full time with Muir busy.

I can’t wait for the fresh perspective coming to Arrowhead.

I'm with you there

as far as Mims goes, he has the physical talents to be great. Hopefully with an opportunity to have OTA’s and whatever else available to him over the summer, he can contribute next season. A rookie which is what Mims practically is or one we draft may not be able to unseat Richardson from the spot and that’ll suck unless he’s vastly improved.

by Chief Willie Wildcat on Feb 2, 2012 2:59 AM CST up reply actions

I don't think Mims is some kind of savior or anything

but he obviously has potential, the coming months will show what the team feels about Mims.

He is potential and not much more at this point, new coaching will help him on his journey to make it in the NFL from a small school as a UDFA.

I’m looking forward to OTA’s this year just because they are actually going to happen.

It will be interesting to see what the focus is with Romeo at Head Coach.

Pioli cut a guy who was wasting a roster spot.

Because Haley wouldn’t play him. Gaither was only on a one year contract, so there was no reason to keep him on the roster if he wasn’t going to play.

So you think he'd have refused to play RT?

He said all along he was good playing either spot, especially since Albert is one of his best friends. He was also the backup RT on game days, so he was a Richardson injury away from being the RT anyway.

As opposed to made up speculation on AP.

Hard to put any real truth to any thing from this team right now

Coaches decided he was the odd man out, despite our lack of depth on the o-line. They must have seen it differently, right or wrong.

I'm so overrated, I'm underrated.

Hopefully it has more to do with David Mims then anything else.

If Mims pans out, this move can be forgiven IMO.

Though personally, I would have cut Steve Maneri… I don’t get the transaction with Jared. Maybe they felt they had no chance to sign Gaither long term?

Could be

I don’t think anyone can argue that the coaching staff should have had Gaither in there if he was healthy enough to play. If he wasn’t, and he was cut, understandable. If it was a “tactical” move implying roster move, and just like you said, they felt he was expendable over Maneri or even Richardson, you absolutely have to question the coaching staff’s judgment, and that may have been a contributing factor to their demise.

I'm so overrated, I'm underrated.

Gaither could have been a determining factor is Haley getting fired...

There is so much speculation to throw around.

If you present it right, anything can look like the logical truth.

you absolutely have to question the coaching staff’s judgment

Of course you do, any time the team makes a questionable decision… we will be here to put the pieces under a microscope.

i refer to Kent Babb's article

He said Haley never gave Gaither a chance, that he didnt even get reps in practice, and Gaither didn’t understand why.

You can say it was Pioli’s decision… but Pioli could only go by what he saw, and what the coaches told him.

If muir truly believed explosiveness was the problem… how is it that he is doing so well in SD, where they use more of a power-blocking scheme, where explosiveness would seem to be more important?

I am the first one to give this organization the benefit of the doubt, but simply put; letting Gaither go was a mistake

by stagdsp on Feb 2, 2012 7:31 AM CST via mobile reply actions

This sounds right.

Wasn’t it rumored that someone was trying to sign mims off of the ps? If so they had to make room for him and you can’t very well release the guy your head coach has starting.

It’s like others are saying. Haley’s dissmisal could be related. This is the type of mistake I would fire a coach for, but I’m not a GM.

by fishhooks on Feb 2, 2012 8:18 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

Well at least Gaither got an opportunity in San Diego

if he stayed in Kansas City it wouldn’t have done him any good.

At least now the guy will make some money in his next contract.

letting Gaither go was a mistake

I agree, but how Mims does in the future will represent how big a mistake it was… and we all will be watching Gaither’s progress wherever he goes.

The really strange thing would be if he somehow ends up back in KC during FA.
