Former Chief Signs With The Dolphins

A few days ago former Kansas City Chief Quinten Lawrence wrote on his Facebook page that he signed with the Miami Dolphins and the team has now confirmed the move.

Lawrence was part of the Chiefs 2009 draft class, a sixth round pick.

He was originally drafted as a receiver out of McNeese State but the Chiefs ultimately moved him to defensive back. Sounds like he'll play defensive back in Miami.

Speaking of the 2009 draft class, only four of the eight remain with the team -- Tyson Jackson, Donald Washington, Jake O'Connell and Ryan Succop. Here's that entire 2009 draft class.

My earliest Chiefs memories are watching guys named Dawson, Podolak, Taylor, Thomas, Bell, and Buchanan. So, yeah...I'm kind of an old fart.

O'Connell actually seemed to make a pretty big jump between year 1 and year 2.

Unfortunately he didn’t do much last year.

I still want to add another TE, but with Moeaki, O’Connell, and Maneri all under contract, I don’t know how much room we have.

Just because those guys signed contracts

doesn’t mean they are guaranteed to make the team. I would be surprised if both of them on on the roster come Sept

ya he went from 2 catches to 3 catches pretty big leap

. He is 1 of the worst Tight ends I have ever seen play. Cinder blocks for hands, couldn’t seperate from a slug if he had a 5 yard head start and can’t play special teams. Dude is worthless

Pioli’s done better since but he still has some head-scratchers like McCluster and Gabe Miller. We could’ve maybe head a real OT with one of those picks. Why he seems to mostly ignore the OL is beyond me.

What is the problem with the McCluster pick? I understand the head scratching with Miller but DMC was has been pretty productive.

I think the problem people have with Dex is that he could have been had later in the draft

Comparatively

this draft class wasn’t that bad. Take a look at other teams and how many players they have from that class remaining on their roster(s). Sure it could be a sign of weak depth, but in a rare optimistic view I agree with commentors above who include Belcher, Cassel, and Vrabel. It could have been a lot worse. I’d predict Jackson will have a longer career as a Chief than Dorsey

It was a terrible year league wide.

I think it’s interesting that most of our good starters and star players were drafted by herm edwards and carl peterson. Flowers, Carr, Bowe, Charles, Johnson, Hali, Dorsey, and Albert.

After 3 years Pioli can hang his hat on Berry, Lewis, Jackson, Houston, Moeaki, and Breaston with a few others too early to tell. (Baldwin, and Hudson).

I’m not sure what that says other than perhaps Edwards and Peterson should get more credit than they do around here. Things look a lot different than I would have expected them to when Pioli was taking over.

Not really

Fact is Peterson couldn’t develop his talent or surround his players with competent coaching. At least in the latter part of his career. I don’t think the career’s of the players Carl drafted would have taken off under Herm, they needed a in-your-face approach and fire lit under their asses. Plus, Breaston shouldn’t be credited to Pioli. He was a FA, not a draft selection

2008 was apparently the first year that Peterson let Herm have a bigger say in the draft, and he knocked it out of the park.

Other than hitting on his first rounders in Tamba and D.J., Peterson’s last several drafts heading into 08 were terrible. It was definitely time for a change.

Carr and Charles were homeruns, I'll give Herm/Carl that.

The other guys were all high picks. They should be expected to become starters. For all the people that love to rip on the Tyson Jackson pick, Dorsey isn’t any better and he was drafted just as high.

Part of the problem lies with scheme/gameplanning (or lack thereof).

It worked so well to use Dex as a power back & Battle on outside runs that we just couldn’t HELP but call those plays over…& over…

Serious response: if we’d scheme to use the guy in space more, we’d see more “premium” performances from Dex. That’s when we get value from the pick—when we use the player the way the Football Gods intended him to be used.

Put it this way: A $100 German knife is a huge waste if you use it like a butter knife or worse, a flathead screwdriver. But use it to cut meat, etc? That’s value for the $.

As we discussed earlier this week: Are you evaluating the player, or the general manager?

Those are two different discussions.

Personally, I think Dex was drafted about a round too early, but STILL has the ability to justify being selected fairly high IF—and this is a big if—he’s allowed to do what he does best. Notice I said “ability.” I didn’t say “would definitely.”

And right now, seeing that he hasn’t gotten physically stronger to take the NFL pounding, it’s going to be harder for him to justify that spot. He goes down too damned easily when tackled…at the end of the day, he hasn’t developed (or been able to) become more than a role player. We’ll see if he takes a year three jump or not.

When you pick a guy that high he needs to be a starter not a 3rd down back. That round was full of quality starters, yet Pioli takes not 1 , but 2 role players. Shameful

He had the 3rd pick in every round and he can only manage a kicker and an average D-end?? He took Alex Magee over Mike Wallace, Terrence Knighton, Louis Vasquez etc…. Magee is out of the league, do you know how big of a black eye that is against Pioli? The fact that the 3rd pick in the 3rd round is out of the NFL 2 years after he was drafted is a major embarrassment

The ’09 draft was probably his biggest failure as a GM—might even be worse than hiring Haley. Coach Haley got the culture changed and imparted the kinds of offensive and defensive schemes that management desired…so there is that.

Joins the likes of Sammie Parker, Snoop Minnis, Kevin Robinson, Kevin Lockett, of speed receivers KC has drafted that can’t seperate from anybody. He proves , yet again, that it takes more than 4.4 speed to be a good NFL receiver
