The "Ideal" Offseason
Obviously there are a thousand opinions out there on what the chiefs should do the offseason and I've heard them all. I am going to do my best to combine them and provide our ideal offseason.
As you may know the Chiefs have approximately $63 million dollars to spend this offseason, by far the most of any team in the NFL. We have no idea how much Pioli/Hunt are willing to spend but we all agree it has to be a significant amount. The key is spending it wisely and it the right places. There are quite a bit of wholes that need filled(OT, NT, RB, OG, TE, SILB, Secondary Depth) and a lot of places to do that with. Our goal for this offseason should be to fill every single need we have with the best player possible. So these would be my ideal moves(mostly realistic) for the rest of this offseason(Best Case Scenario).
Bringing Back Our Guys:
Our wonderful GM has preeched to us since hes been here about drafting well and re-signing our guys. His first draft was an epic fail but I think it has improved the past two years. It would be an absolute travesty to allow Carr or Bowe to walk especially with the consistent passing on great options via free agency the last few years. I would give Carr almost the exact same deal as Flowers contract (6yr, $50 mill) because I think he has an incredibly high ceiling and is a cornerstone for our young D. For Bowe I'd go 5 years for $35 million, making him a top 5 paid wideout. Those are the obvious guys but great teams have great depth and that comes when you have guys in backup roles that had started for you in previous seasons. Re-sign UFAs: Bowe, Carr, Jackie Battle, Barry Richardson, Amon Gordon, Travis Daniels, Le'ron McClain, Jon McGraw Total Expenses: Approx. $18 million
Free Agency:
As of any season, there are positions where the free agent pool is deep and others where that is not the case. The positions of depth that are of interest to us are NT, RB, OG. Sign:
NT Paul Soliai

Nuff said??? Dudes a beast and the anchor this D needs. Nose tackles cost big money and we got it. Contract: 5 years, $75 million
OG Carl Nicks

Money=Beef=Win LOS=Championship.... We have to get better at the line on both sides of the ball. This one is also pretty obvious but is someone who can lead our young interior and provide dominance. Contract: 7 years, $126 million

He's 35. Obviously this one could really change to Kyle Orton in the coming weeks but as of now he's a top 5 QB of all-time and this kind of opportunity doesn't come along everyday(if he's healthy...) Contract: 2 years w/ team option for a 3rd, $20 million guaranteed, incentive for games played making total value of $40 million
Total Free Agent Expenses: Approx. $43 million
Yes my goal is to spend Clark's money and I'm cutting it close but a little trimmin here and there and whala.
NFL Draft:
We've all seen our fair share of mocks this season but here's one after free agency. Needs as of now(in order): OT, RB, TE, SILB, Secondary Depth
Round 1: The Chiefs trade the 11/12th pick and DE/DT Glenn Dorsey to the Bengals(needs: RB, OG, CB, DT) for the 2012 17th(1), 53rd(2), 116th(4) Select: OT Mike Adams-Bit of a reach/risk here but has as high of a ceiling as top prospect Kalil...............Alternative- SILB Vontaze Burfict
Round 2a: SILB Donte Hightower.................Alternative- OT Zebrie Sanders
2b: DT/DE Alameda Ta'amu-Really like Bailey but he still needs improvement in the run game and with the trade of dorsey this becomes a need. Versatile big man, reminds me of a Haloti Ngata
Round 3: TE Ladarius Green
Round 4a: RB Isiah Pead
4b: FS Janzen Jackson
Round 5: WR Marvin McNutt
Round 6: CB Asa Jackson
Round 7a: SS Charles Mitchell
7b: RB Foswhitt Whittaker
Be Gentle!

Ehhh... needs tweaked
Drop Peyton Manning and I like the FA. The reason you need to drop Peyton Manning is so you can pay the rookies. The money’s gotta come from somewhere. Unless I’m mistaken, and it comes from somewhere else. In which case, someone please correct me. That 43 mil. would pay for most of if not all of the rookies contracts. Another thing is that between Bowe and Carr, if they both re-sign, there will have to be some guaranteed money thus pro-rating their contracts, making them more appealing, and saving us potentially $3 mil. a year in cap space under the new CBA. Also, I’m not too fond of the later rounds, mainly because of the way I went in my own mock draft. Overall, not bad.
Yeah like i said best case scenario, kyle orton is probably more realistic
And the reason for Dorsey’s trade is A) out of position B) i wanted to dump his contract. And i paid everyone except carr and manning top 5 positional money figuring you can get some of them cheaper. And honestly the last few draft pick i was just tryin to fill cause i ran out of needs ha

Well done
It’s creative and makes sense. I think NO will get Nicks resigned, and let Colston walk. It’s always hard to predict draft picks but I don’t see us having a shot at Hightower in rd 2 and if the chiefs trade back it better be a hell of a deal.
I think people are really high on him cause of the season he had but
once the combine rolls around and he runs a slow forty and struggles with lateral movement he’ll drop. And if he doesnt drop burfict will

Positional value
Inside linebackers are always mocked high but when the draft actually roles around they almost always fall; especially ones, like Hightower, who lack elite athleticism. For example remember last year Martez Wilson was mocked as a late first very early second, ended up falling to the third.
that deal might be a good one if Richardson is still there when we pick
might have alot of interest from several teams wanting to get to that slot
nicely done ... I dislike it almost all the way thru, that is I disagree with just about everything ... but VERY well done!
Soliai I do agree with … for the record, the rest … no thank you :-)

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
You mean you don't want the Chiefs to spend 126 Million on Carl Nicks?
I thought you liked him? 0:)

oh, I think Nicks is awesome ...
… but I want the Chiefs to spend $126 Million on ME, not HIM!
come on, I’m worth it :-)

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Why are we giving Soliai 15M$/year?
I would be surprised if he gets more then 6 per year. He’s a one dimensional, 2 down(at most) player. No way he’s making anywhere near 10 a year let alone 15. Also Nicks is a great player but he’s another guy that won’t get much more then 10M$/year. Other then that I like the draft and the trade.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
In 2010, Wilfork received the highest NT deal to that date...
And it was $40mil for 5 years. $8 mil per year. No WAY we pay Soliai $15 mill a year…That’s good QB money per year.

Agreed.......
Soliaia may be good but he isnt elite (yet) so we cant give him elite money let alone rediculous Albert Haynesworth money. 6 or 7 million a year should get him.
And Wilfork is far more versatile then Soliai.
Good find

all those millions being tossed around was hard to accept.
I know thats kind of what has to be done, im cheap cheap cheap though I would like to see it spent in a different way. nicks at 7 years 126 million was hard to swallow thats 18 million a year? then soliai at 5 years 75 million, thats 15 million a year? Hard to imagine backloading any of those two contracts. Peyton, dont get me wrong prior to all this neck stuff I would throw whatever to get peyton but, only being able to pass 24 yards and cant pass to one side of the field? I want to pass on the peyton stuff until there is some more positive things about his so called recovery let alone throw some millions his way.
Not trying to destroy your post great work, again the sign bowe, carr, mcclain, all the others you added all for around 18 million? I dont see that happening either maybe bowe at around 9-12 million carr is probably wanting just as much as flowers and no less, I will let you finish that math maybe all them for around 25 million.
remember we have albert to resign also within the next year, I think albert is nice, not a stud but I like what he gives us and im not going to complain no matter where he plays and im not going to ask him to play anywhere else I like him at LT with that said he needs a new deal before next year at least worked out within next year. save some money back there.
point of my long boring comment is this, I know its great to be a fat kid in a candy store with your christmas money, lets not just blow money to blow money, how great would we have been if we had a legit backup to charles, berry, tony, ( not a cassel fan ) and cassel prior to palko playing we might have made the playoffs. point is once again lets build lots and lots of depth while also having really good not expensive but quality players all over the roster.
nicks goes down in your scenario we are up a creek no paddle and headed for the old folks nudest beach ( not a site I want to see ).
im hearing nothing but bad things about mike adams also.
watching tv today and mcshay and kiper was breaking him down and saying he was inconsistant didnt have his head in the game all the time and we already know he doesnt have all the skills we look for. bruce cambell ringing a bell here?
This is from 2010 as well...
Top paid O-lineman…biggest contract was 43 mill for 5 years…that’s $8.6 mil per year

Saints, All-Pro G Evans do 7-year, $57M deal
Just sayin
No WAY you offer up a 126mil contract even if Nicks is the better of the two IMO

I like it but don't like the peyton risk either!
if we trade dorsey and it better involve moving up to get RG3 but do like you draft for the most part love the FA signings other the peyton just don’t want us to take that risk I’d rather leave it to the rookie RG3 if anything

If we're playing fantasy land (ideal off-season)
then I’ll take…
Re-sign Bowe.
Re-sign McClain.
Tag Carr and trade him for a 1st rd in this year’s draft.
Trade Dorsey for at least a 2nd in this year’s draft.
Sign Soliai. NT….check.
Sign Finley. TE….check.
Sign Green-Ellis. Power RB/3rd Down RB….check.
Sign Landry. S….check. Berry and Landry.
Sign finnegan. CB….check. Flowers and Finnegan.
Trade 2012 1st, 2012 2nd, 2013 1st for overal #2.
- overal pick: Draft RG III.
Other 1st rd from Carr trade: best RT available.
2nd: best CB available/best OG/C available.
3rd: best OG/C available.
4th-7th: bpa

I would take that in a second...
Doubt it works out that way, though…
Think Cleveland will make a play for RG3, and they have the #4 pick and another pick in the first round ala Julio Jones trade. More attractive than our #11 and next year’s #1 which could be anywhere…
by AnkenyChiefsFan on Feb 17, 2012 8:37 AM CST up reply actions
I doubt it too. I more than doubt it.
but if we’re going with ideal, I can’t settle for anything less, right?
For instance, I’d take any number of pending FA TEs. Shiancoe, Finley, Carlson, etc.
I’d be okay with Garay at NT.
I’d absolutely love to sign a flashy WR (Mike Wallace, anyone???).
And I’m not going to judge Routt off of one season playing, especially for the NFL equivalent to dementors.
I’d still love to see all most our FAs re-signed.
Soliai is at the top of my list.
Green-Ellis replaces Jones, easily an upgrade.
Landry is probably a pipe dream, but he is supposedly coming of an injury, so who knows?
As for trading up to draft RG III, it is much easier to draft up to #3 overall. However, it isn’t impossible.
Even if Dorsey is only valued at a 3rd, and Carr only at a 2nd, it would give KC an extra 750 pts or so (the equivalent of pick 24ish?). Surrender our actual 3rd rd as well and you’ve pretty much moved up to #3 overall. But from there, you have give up our 2nd rd or next year’s 1st.
However, if Carr is properly valued in the 1st, well then you would already be at that #2 pt value.
I don’t think they’ll come close to that $60M they have to spend, but I do think they will spend. Even if Bowe and Carr re-sign at an overpay of $10M/yr that still leaves $40M. And even if they front-load their contracts, making 2012 worth a bigger hit than the rest…say $15M cap hit each? That still leaves $30M.
I can’t believe I left off signing Nicks on that list.

I agree with you
NT and TE resign our guys bowe,Carr, mcclain and trade up get RG3 because we can afford it sign OL also

really quite rediculous
we wouldn’t even need to spend that much to lure nicks away. we could give him 80 over 7 years and he’d still come. let’s not just spend for the sake of spending
KC Draft prediction: No OT taken in first round
$11.5M/yr ???!!!
I would not want Pioli to sign him if he is seeking that kind of money. No way in hell!

yeah, i'd love to have him, but not for much more than $9M (and maybe not even then)

Get Nicks and Soliai for way less than the post suggest
+ Bowe + (yes maybe pipe dream) Landry and that is a great FA Off season for me. Clark’s money well spent. Tag and trade Carr + Dorsey (still think Glen could dominate in a 4-3) and picks for RG3. Draft the first best available RT, whatever round we end up drafting first in because of picks traded..
Give all these guys a year to gel together. Albert – Asa – Hudson – Nicks – BRTA looks pretty good for RG3 to learn behind. Handing off to Charles and McClain. Next year grab another 3-4 DE/CB/ILB in the draft/FA.
