My Favorite Chiefs- Defense (1980's-Present Edition)

51uz6lzolgl

Well, I am back with my defensive edition. And as a reminder, these are my favorite players, not who I think are the All Time Chiefs. There are some names on there who may appear on both lists but there are also some names that make you scratch your heads. At any rate, they are guys that I always liked, through good and bad. I'm going to run a 3-4 defense and take two safeties, ignoring the free and strong designations. Here we go...

Star-divide

DE- Neil Smith. I always liked Smith as a complete defensive end, he played the run well and relentlessly rushed the passer. I also loved how he paid tribute to George Brett with his home run swing after a sack.

DT- Dan Saleamua was the man! He had a great personality and was huge on and off the field; imaging=e him playing today with all the access we'd have to him. he'd be fun on Twitter, Facebook, etc. I also liked Joe Phillips, Lional Dalton and Chester McGlockton. Saleamua was a fun player to watch.

DE- Starting on the end away from Neil will be Darren Mickell. He was not a great player, almost like Wallace Gilberry before Wallace Gilberry! he was a pass rusher with limited ability but I liked him. He edges out Mike Bell, Art Still, Jared Allen and Gilberry.

OLB- Derrick Thomas was simply put an outstanding player. He was relentless going after the QB and his first step, especially at Arrowhead was phenomenal. He died too young, and broke a lot of hearts when he did.

ILB- I am choosing two here and they are Derrick Johnson and Anthony Davis. I loved Davis, not sure why (a recurring theme in this post!) but he was fun to watch, played with a little attitude. DJ has really come into his own and as a home grown Chief I have loved watching him grow. A big play waiting to happen.

OLB- Tamba Hali is the choice here; non stop motor and makes tons of plays on sheer effort. He has a great back story and his passion comes through loud and clear on Sundays.

Just missing the cut at linebacker are Gary Spani, Gary Stills, Donnie Edwards and Tracy Simien.

CB- Dale carter. I loved me some Dale carter! Athletic, cocky and what a player. He was a lock down, in your face aggressive corner and had swagger before we called it "swag". I know he was a knucklehead off the field, but man he came to play on Sundays.

CB- Albert Lewis. Can you imagine Lewis and carter playing together.? Wow, super athleticism and big play ability!!

Just missing the cut at CB: Tim Collier, Gary Green, James Hasty, Mark McMillan, Kevin Ross, Bennie Sapp, Dexter McCleon, and Cris Dishman. And I'd be remiss to mention today's starters who I like a lot, Flowers and Carr are moving up this list for me.I love the Chiefs history at corner!

S- My two safeties are Deron Cherry and Jerome Woods. I loved Cherry as a kid, he was the guy I wanted to be in the backyard when I played defense! He was an outstanding player and to become a great safety after being drafted as a punter from Rutgers ( a punter! from Rutgers!) Woods was a solid player and I loved how he roamed the field and played both the run and pass well. He didn't make a lot of big plays, but he was one of my all time favorites to watch.

Just missed for me: Eric Berry, Greg Wesley (if he would have kept hitting post contract as he did pre-contract he would have been a hell of a player), Lloyd Burress, Charles Mincy, Bernard Polllard and Gary Barbaro.

P-Geez, tough call. never had much of an affinity for a punter. i guess I'd go with Colquitt because I admire the way the whole family punts!

PR- Dante Hall. Not even close. He was phenomenal. The most exciting player in the league for a few years; one who truly could score every time he touched the ball. JT Smith was also exciting to watch back there.

KR- Tamarack Vanover. he was a big strong return man who was different in that he broke tackles and ran away from people. An overtime return versus SD was huge and Marty loved him. Like Carter, he had some issues off the field which curtailed his career.

Well, there it is. And again, I hope I may stir up some conversation and bring a smile to a few faces with some blasts from the past. Go Chiefs!

I was always a huge fan of Tracy Simien, too (former ILB during Schott's term).

He wasn’t the most talented guy, but he was about as physical a defender as it gets.
Loved Art Still, too. When the rest of the team was totally weak, Art never dissed KC and kept producing.

Tracy

once had a goal line stand performance similar to DJ’s last year. It was a shining moment for a workmanlike defender, but I always think of it when his name comes up.

Was that against Miami in 1991?

The RB (forget who it was) was trying to jump over the line and into the endzone on 3rd down and Simien stuck him dead in his tracks midair and forced a fumble which someone else ran back for a TD.

Chris Martin

Martin #57 ran the ball back for a TD, Sammie Smith was the RB. I don’t remember if that was SImien on the hit but I remember the other two.

Mine was actually a different game

But I do remember the hit and fumble return in that game. One of the best weeks in Chiefs football history, starting with the huge Monday night victory against the Bills and culminating with avenging the prior years playoff loss to Miami 42-7.

I was in Las Vegas then, but the Chiefs-Dolphins game was the national game that week, so I got to watch it at home. Unfortunately, the game turned into such a blowout that the network switched games, so I had to get in my car and drive to the Hilton to watch the rest of it.

Dante was great.

Derrick Thomas was and will always be a beast. If only he were around today to mentor Tamba Hali.

Perhaps I'm the only one

But I think Dale Carter is the most overrated player in the history of the franchise. I remember too many times when a team got a long TD against us and be open enough that you didn’t know who was supposed to be covering him. Most of the time, it turned out to be Dale. Why was he not in the picture? Because when he saw he was beat , he would fall down ON PURPOSE! (We used to say “Dale tripped on the chalk again”) so he had an excuse. A talented quitter with no heart.

Another guy in your starting lineup I was not fond of was Jerome Woods. Part of this, I must admit, was that when the Chiefs took him, Lawyer Milloy was available, and he was the safety I really wanted. (I think I was more than proven right on that one) I also thought his tackling was absolutely atrocious. He would line up for the big hit and completely miss people. I started saying (parroting some ESPN guy’s call of strikeouts) “Jerome with the WHIFF” and I had to say it ALOT.

Agree with most of these

Just glad to see no Eric Warfield, William Bartee, or Ray Crockett. Bartee had NO career aINT’s. He actually had 3.5 sacks, about the only thing that went right with Greg Robinson’s defenses of the time.

I don't even like seeing the runners up

Bennie Sapp and Dexter McCleon in there. Both were pretty useless IMO.

Agree on Dale Carter

Side note...

And I mean this “with all due respect”, so that absolves me from any butt-hurt feelings, but your avatar/profile pic makes me laugh. Not saying YOU make me laugh, just that…….well….it’s either a senior picture, or you sell real estate. Again, with…all…due…respect!!

OK...

I don’t agree with Carter, I don’t recall him tripping and falling on purpose and I think he lived up to his 1st round status, he was a very good player.
As for Woods, he did whiff on some but I liked him. And keep in mind, this is not a list of the best players, just players I liked. Perfect example is a guy like Simien, not a great player but a workmanlike guy who played hard and was fun to watch.
Finally, my profile pic…what can I say. I wanted to upload a pic and it was the only one I had on my new laptop! And it’s not senior portrait and I do not sell real estate! My son actually beat you to the punch when he laughed at my picture, he said it was dumb and I needed to get a Chief pic in there. So no hard feelings. LOL

Glad you got the profile pic joke, like I said, didn't mean it in a bad way

Regarding Dale, I think you misunderstood me. I loved the guy, and while he’s a better speaker at an AA meeting than at your local elementary school, he was still one of my favorite Chiefs from back in the day.

Great List

Only changes I’d make are:

Donnie Edwards for Anthony Davis
Jared Allen for Mickell (Allen might be my favorite FOOTBALL player ever)
Louie Aguiar for Colquitt
James Hasty for Dale Carter (I never really liked Carter’s attitude)

by Bonofied on Feb 16, 2012 8:38 AM CST reply actions

Nice list but if the time time line is 1980 -present.....

and if it is to include guys I just plain liked to see do good cuz they were fun to cheer for….

I could not leave off:

Joe Delaney RB – HERO who gave it his all.
Dan Saleaumua – Huge number of big plays for a NT.
Kevin Ross CB – What a duo with Albert Lewis.
Gary Spaini LB – Local guy makes good.

Delaney played defense?

Albert and Ross may have been the best CB combo we ever had

Whitney Paul

At linebacker was a great player on some dismal teams. What about the 60’s and early 70’s Chiefs? they would still probably kick all their asses and Emmit, Bobby and Willie are in their 60’s at least.

The most important thing you can do in life is help other people.

Good comments

I love hearing the old names like Whitney Paul, that is why I wanted to do one of these. And seeing some of the other corners from way back is great too, man we have had some great corner play.
I like Sapp blitzing off the edge, thought he should have done it more; I also was at a game in Baltimore and McCleon had a big pick right in front of me, maybe I liked him because of that.
My memory of Aguiar is running the fake punt in a playoff game. It took him 32 minutes to go 3 yards…and we needed 5! Not his fault,m he didn’t call the play but its my clearest memory of him.
