Triplettes

Ha, The Kansas City Chiefs attacking vertically. We all know why we have issues attacking Defenses deep.
So, the Horizontal attack with our ZBS Rushing attack and then maybe a little plunging fire from the Mortar battallion? Tight-ends are the New Passing attack.

Why Not, Lets get the opponent sliding left and right with a solid Front on the offensive Line and unleash the Three Horseman of Arrowhead.

I've seen a few Oregon games and it always seemed like LaMike was getting banged up every other play.

………………I know they platooned a lot with Kenjon Barner (who, if we didn’t have McCluster) I would like. But I know he had some off the field issues, not sure what but he doesn’t seem to be a guy I’d want. But who the @#$% am I ; )

Running backs are a varied taste

Some like em big, and some like em early, and some like em late, and we shouldn’t even go into whether they Compliment Charles or not.

Maybe just a fist bump is enough for Jamaal.

I like Carlson....he is still pretty young.

………….I know he had a injury, maybe a neck, not sure. But he is a good blocker and good receiver. I think he would be perfect. Probably relatively cheap as well, due to the past injury.

…..I’d skip LaMike and since Carlson is around there is no need for Fleener. Who do you go after in the second, in this scenario?

Understood. Sorta.

Josh Norman could be a great small-school pickup. Wonder where he’ll end up going, and when he’ll be taken. He was not at all intimidated in Senior Bowl week.

You always take TE and RB before I would, at least given the stage of development I see the Chiefs being in. Some have said Schwartz is basically Zebrie Sanders. I wonder if Sanders slips to late 2nd or 3rd and if Schwartz creeps up to something close to that.

by PVChiefsfan on Feb 16, 2012 12:53 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah. Side-to-side.

I don’t think we saw enough commitment to TRYing to turn the corner early and often. But you have to get the execution level up to where it’s a dead heat if the D plays it perfectly. Maybe a minimal gain, but never for a loss. That’s why I didn’t care for Reiff, very much. Gives up too much ground, imo. Pretty athletic, but against 5- and 6-tech, trying to string out the play, he gets driven backwards.

I hope the Chiefs can go to that, and GET a runningback or two who doesn’t dance around when he sees they’re gonna be TOUGH yards. Just lowers his pads and makes defenders WORK for it, and salvages something from nothing, that way. That’s why I like the short, stocky RBs, who’ll just try to move pile if nothing’s really there. Guys who understand the physics and see the weak spot, in terms of leverage, when there’s really no hole. This is a vision thing that I think goes overlooked in guys who look for shit at the Combine, assuming they’re even invited. Get you a guy with those big Marcus Allen eyes, and quick brains.

He made progress in pass pro'.

Still a non-factor as a lead blocker, imo. But he’s a guy who could play that kind of running style behind the right OL. I think Le’Ron might actually be more of an all-around guy for that system. Snatches the ball out of the air. Lead blocker. Pass Pro’ blocker. A load to bring down. Doesn’t dance around a bunch. One cut and go.

Yeah. You 'n' I seem to be partial to field generalship against elephants.

Fighting elephants without any elephants of your own was pretty revolutionary. Cost a lotta good men, while he figured it out, but Alexander was 2nd-to-none in gametime adjustments.

I think it takes a pretty special QB to really execute that stretch play offense. Elway managed it, but even in his dotage, he had better feet and was tougher to sack than most. Our current OL can do a heckuva job blocking it up off the run action, but it doesn’t always work. Need a heady, athletic QB with a BIG ARM to meet ‘em halfway, although Elway didn’t have the rocket arm after the biceps thing (i.e., during his SB victories, he wasn’t the elite downfield passer).

What is truly tough is to make a good Draft with DeCastro at the top

The premiere tackles are gone and everyone is a project from Mike Adams on down. If we can find a decent player for the RT in FA or drafted early in 2-4 round we got something going….

Cause the 2nd round is flush with offensive weapons.

Trading down leaves the same issue Offensive Tackle.

I would almost just suffer through Richardson for another year so we could get all the talent available in the 1st and 2nd rounds

IMO

by Steve_Chiefs on Feb 14, 2012 9:19 PM CST reply actions

well, any draft that starts with DeCastro is, of necessity, a good start

I don’t like RB in the 2nd, not that L James is a bad choice per se, but even a bit of a project at OT in 2nd should be close to ready to take over for BRich, no?

then too, is Dwayne Allen available? not that Orson Charles is a bad pick, I admit … damn, just has to be SOMEONE for OT in 2nd … has to be

hmmmmmmm … is 2nd too high for Antonio Allen?

1-2-3 are my focux points on the draft … after that it’s pure speculation (even before that, but you know the deal)

triplets … DeCastro-Hudson-Asamoah … one for all and all for me! on Donner, on Blitzen, cream cheese for the blintzes and blitz with Berry, not Lewis … re-sign Carr and Bowe and Orton and life shall be good, a light therefore to shine upon the land, fair knight!

But why take a possible player on a reach? Both Fleener and Charles are top-3 TE’s and Fleener was the pick and Charles was the best pick in the 3rd. I could live with two TE’s, but AP? and then the RB’s were okay, but really James did not become a National player by being bad….

by Steve_Chiefs on Feb 14, 2012 9:32 PM CST up reply actions

Because they're not done on OL, and the shortest path to good RB depth is good, consistent, strong OL play.

Makes me sick, when they draft RB high, and there’re defenders trying to get the hand-off before HE can.

All due respect, Mr. Wiegmann and Mr. Lilja, but there’re just too many DTs in the league who can blow right by and through you. And those DTs play for the key teams we’re gonna have to beat in December, January and February.

Spend those 2nds on OL until you suddenly realize that promising dark horse UDFA has some GAME. You’d never see it, until the OL reached a tipping point, but NOW those smarts, toughness and hands that you signed him for, are suddenly showing themselves on the playing field, and all it took was that extra half-second Decastro could sustain that block… Now the kid’s gettin’ to the 2nd level and DBs are bouncing off him! Something you’d never know he had in him, without that nice crease created by the pancake block. And what’s this? Decastro’s still on his feet and took out the Mike LB!

by Steve_Chiefs on Feb 14, 2012 9:45 PM CST up reply actions

I like the ZBS idea, but if you can't straight drop back and pass when you have to, you're in trouble.

Run action isn’t fooling anybody when you’re down a score, inside of 2 minutes. You’re throwin’ and they’re comin’ after ya. That’s why I keep going back to the classic elite tackles and top-1/3 interior. You can fall short on that and still be effective, but not WAY short on that, like the Chiefs have been since Roaf retired.

That small vaseline-jerseyed O-Line in Denver was pretty good at grinding.

And if you can punch it in more consistently than the other guys, trading your long drives for their QB-centric quick scoring, you can win a lot of games pulling away. But it sure is nice to be able to pass pro’ when you’re sending 3 or 4 or 5 guys into the pattern.

I'm down with that as long as we throw Le'Ron or Jackie into the mix every once in a while, keep the defense on their toes.

There worn out from jumping side to side trying to chase down these little gnats, then out of nowhere they have a 260 pound fullback is trampling them. Of course, I’d only be ok with this pick if we get DeCastro and a good tackle or Martin and a good guard. O-line comes first. :)
Also, I like Pead more than James. He’s a bit bigger, more durable, more physical but still has all the moves and speed. Just another addition to the unpredictable offense.

by NigerianNightmare on Feb 14, 2012 11:23 PM CST reply actions

I like Pead, too.

But there’s getting outside FAST with a LITTLE guy and getting outside PRETTY fast with a LOAD. Terrell Davis wasn’t super-fast, but he was gonna drive DBs and LBs backwards on contact. To stop him from picking up 4 or 5 yards, you needed to get your big men outside the hashes. Saw it a few times, but especially when Denver beat the Packers. Gilbert Brown was excited because of the stuffs he got outside, but by the end of the game, he was as useless as Porus’s elephants were by the end of the Battle of Hydaspes.

I would be disappointed if we went RB in round 2

There are solid options available in FA, and this team has too many holes to take a backup in round 2.

by ArrowDread on Feb 15, 2012 10:07 AM CST up reply actions

Sproles is good.

That Denver team won a couple SBs with very tough, physical RBs running behind that (cheating) athletic OL. A guy who can make something happen when the OL’s maybe just forcing the defender out of position a little bit, like he’s in position, but you got a piece of him, so he’s a tad off-balance and your RB hits him in the mouth. Sproles is just damn good, all-around. Not a power back, though.

Why pound the middle with big backs when you can get the edge and let your ZBS lineman do what they do best

Seal bigger lineman from the gap

by Steve_Chiefs on Feb 15, 2012 9:58 AM CST reply actions

But once again, that's much too predictable.

If we don’t even have a big back at all to threaten, then that’s just as predictable as lining up 2 big backs in the backfield. It’s not like three scatbacks isn’t less predictable than three brusiers.

by NigerianNightmare on Feb 15, 2012 10:04 AM CST up reply actions

That's why I just like an all-around tough guy. 7's and 8's in every category, rather than 10's and 2's.

I’d run the scatbacks outside and inside and I’d run the big backs inside and outside. The scatbacks get headway up the gut off cutbacks and that first step to the outside. The big backs get outside with that first step forwards and then cutting it outside.

That’s why the 7’s and 8’s deal, with a Top 5 or 10 OL. One of the reasons I hate Thunder and Lightning is defenses can gear up against one or the other. I want players with a little of both, plus blocking, head and hands. These kinds of guys tend to go overlooked, and that’s why Shanahan was so successful with RBs in Denver.

Anyway, big backs can threaten the edge, same as scatbacks, if the OL is athletic enough. It’s all about gettin’ wide of the guys who are big enough to stop you. In Terrell Davis’s case, he wasn’t all that fast, but he was a tough tackle, and the big men it took to deny him positive yards got worn down. And scatbacks can threaten the middle, because the D spreads itself out to meet the edge threat, and the scatback can cut back against bigger men who are now running the wrong way.

They get open off the play fake, because backers have to bite HARD to keep ‘em from busting up the middle, and then that big back’s moving in the opposite direction, which frees HIM up behind the LBs. That’s why play fake or not, I’m tryin’ ta deck that running back, because he STILL wants the ball, only later.

There are plenty of big guys with great hands.

Peyton Hillis, Mike Tolbert, Ovie Mughelli, Le’Ron McClain, Owen Schmitt, Jason Snelling, BenJarvus Green-Ellis… Steve Maneri.
Big is not a synonym for “unathletic”.

Oh yes they are.

Difference is, they’re fifteen yards off the ball and already geared up to shoot forward because they aren’t worried about having to run the other way. I’ve watched it for the last three years. Every D-back we play has visions of making ESPN with a highlight hit on a crossing or dump-off route, and a lot of them do make it.

I'm fine with James

after we get rid of McCluster. Which probably needs to happen anyways.

by rich04 on Feb 15, 2012 5:33 PM CST reply actions

McCluster's fine. he's just waiting for the team to catch up.

You don’t compound the error of picking him when they did by making the same error. Now that you have him, you do what you should’ve done in the first place, and taken the OL to the next level. If they’d had horse properly in front of cart, that McCluster pick is OL and NOW a James pick would make sense.

Jamaal could've set the record for YPC.

But somehow the Chiefs still struggled to convert on 3rd down against the better defenses. 230 carries is the most Jamaal ever had, and when they STARTED him against the Ravens in the playoffs, there was the one big scoring play and not much else.

My sense of the game is get you an all-around RB who’s TOUGH and quicker than guys bigger, bigger than guys quicker.

And I’m a big Jamaal fan, but I’d sure rather see them lay off the high picks at RB, and invest in guys to block for Jamaal. And that’s assuming he’s the same player he was before the ACL, when he comes back. Best way to make him SEEM like the same player is to block better and solidify the passing game.

You want elite RB's at a bargain basement price?

we did not have elite offensive lines in 2009 or 2010 either.

Jamaal got his consistently. and I bet a similar back could get it too.

I gotta side with Mills here. I don't think there are any similar backs.

He was one rush away from breaking a forty year old record. It’d be a mistake to chase draft picks in an attempt to duplicate him.

Better defenses do that to everyone, that is when Better QB’s come into the equation.

I am ignoring that other side of the issue :(

The Chiefs give up a huge chunk of relative Offense (to the rest of the NFL)

becuase of Cassel. Cassel is hunting 3000 yards while most QB’s are over 4000 yards passing.

So our ground game has to make up the difference. 2000 yards on the ground is not a luxery but a NEED for the Chiefs to make up for the QB. Wasting Downs on Ground Pounders over 5-6 yard per attempt Running backs is a bad bargain for the Chiefs.

This

Is just ridiculous.

Might as well give up 800+ yards from scrimmage (our 2nd biggest offensive contributor) and his 4.5 YPC (despite being used terribly for much of the year)…

Or something.

I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
