Colts will lose cap space if they release Manning
Per Andrew Brandt, who is a good follow on twitter. - "@adbrandt 2012 Colts Cap number for Peyton Manning: $17 million if kept; $10.4 million if released." Maybe this isn't news to everyone but me, but I sure didn't see their cap space shrinking by releasing Manning.

a couple of additions...
“@JimIrsay We can make it work if he wants to be here.”
“@adbrandt Problem for @JimIrsay is that contract was negotiated with decision point in mind. Peyton has the leverage to say no.”

No reason for Peyton to say yes
after his GM and head coach were fired. Colts are moving on to a new era.

and Irsay
is trying to figure out some way to renegotiate the contract so he doesn’t have to pay $28 million to a player that didn’t play a down in 2011 and who is now a health risk, plus save his cap space.

Yep, no reason for either side to come together.
Of course, they’ll act like they want to, for PR purposes.

I'm not sure about this
The way I read it he was more costly to keep. Try reading Brandt’s piece (Peyton-Predicament )on Manning. You can find part one here → http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Peyton-Predicament-Part-1.html
It’s a 3 part series.
by the way is that Albert or Andrew Brandt?
My info is from Andrew
It is Andrew, my bad
I’ll fix it.

Right, $17M is more costly than $10.4M.

Of course, that's just the cap hit.
The actual cash hit is about $35M.

got it
I went back and looked it over again. I just don’t see how they could possibly keep him.
They would be idiots to do so, actually.

You're probably right
Take the cap hit. Know that you’ll have Luck, be extremely limited on FA signings, and probably suck for another year. On the other side of the coin, a sucky year means another high draft pick. Unfortunately they won’t be out from under the mess Polian and Manning created until 2016.

I'm talking cap space alone though..
as he says, They could be paying $51 million for both Manning and Luck, but taking nearly a $7 million hickey on cap.

This is a story written by Albert Brandt on the Colts situation with Manning
Again, if somehow, contrary to all indications, the Colts exercise the option on Manning and draft Luck, the combined cash to the two players – who play the same position – would be close to $51 million paid in 2012. Paying $51 million for two players at the same position, only one of which will play, is untenable.
the Cap charge for Manning’s signing bonus – before adding any salary — is $4 million per year every year from 2011-2015.
Remaining signing bonus proration accelerates upon release of a player. Thus, were Manning released, the entire remaining unamortized bonus — $16 million — would accelerate into the 2012 Cap. This charge is commonly referred to as "dead money": amounts on a team’s Cap for players no longer on the roster.

ahhh I re-read the series
actually I just scanned it but basically yes it would cost them more under the CAP but they save a bunch of CASH
Either way they screwed themselves on his contact.
Exactly
so it does add to the drama of what they actually do next month. They need some serious rebuilding pieces and this does not help.

Their fans that want to keep him are morons.
Everything is set up perfectly for them to make a clean break into a new era, and they couldn’t ask for a better prospect to lead them going forward. They should be thanking their lucky stars instead of going all nostalgic.

I see both sides
if he had been a Chief for 10 years and had taken them to the Super Bowl a couple times and won one, it’d be hard to let go. Even if Luck is the next superstar, he has yet to do anything in the NFL. I get told that all the time when commenting on prospects.

So you're saying they should keep Peyton and we should trade up for Luck?

of course not ... they're still going to draft Luck, regardless of what happens with Manning

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
True
He’d be one hell of an expensive mentor, but honestly what Colts fan would complain about Peyton being there to groom their next star?

none, I'm sure
he’s an icon in Indy … as he should be
although there are some, to be sure, who are ready to say “bye Peyton, thanks for all the memories” and move on

They'll complain when the rest of the team sucks
because they have $51M tied up in one position.
