Stanford Routt Reportedly Visiting Chiefs Tomorrow

Photo

The Kansas City Chiefs were one of the initial teams linked to free agent CB Stanford Routt via various media reports and now comes word that Routt will actually visit the Chiefs. NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reports Routt is scheduled to visit KC on Tuesday.

Interesting, for sure. The Chiefs are probably doing some due diligence here in case CB Brandon Carr gets away in free agency. But we haven't heard anything on where they stand with Carr so it's hard to read anything into that.

On Routt, I would guess this is more of a getting-to-know-you sorta thing. Until free agency starts on March 13, he's the best free agent cornerback available, which means his value is probably a little inflated. That's not the Chiefs style to sign a guy at a time like that.

I think the Chiefs are probably doing their homework to prepare for all possibilities rather than scurrying to sign Routt, like, tomorrow.

Routt visited the Buffalo Bills on Monday. He's also been linked to the Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys and Tennessee Titans.

me too

But, it’s smart of Pioli to take a look-see

Could be market research, leverage, due dilligence, or maybe they just want another good CB (remember they looked at Leigh Bodden last year)

Could they really tie up that much money in the secondary (by retaining Carr AND bringing in Routt)?? We have to prepare to give E Berry his big pay day in a few years too

by ExRoyalsFan on Feb 13, 2012 6:01 PM CST up reply actions

Berry isn't getting paid for a while....And by the time that comes around we should have other options

Either way I’m pretty sure it’s going to be either Carr or Routt, not both. It’d be far too expensive to have elite players at all positions of the secondary.

by SoCalChief17 on Feb 13, 2012 6:03 PM CST up reply actions

doubtful

I think they would ask Routt to take a big pay cut to sign here, which is one reason he won’t be a Chief

You're assuming anyone will give Routt a contract like his previous Raiders contract

Chances we keep Carr and pay Routt like the Raiders did – pretty low.

Chances Routt gets paid like the Raiders paid him, by anyone else in the NFL – my guess is, pretty low.

It's no fun if I have to explain it.

by TRSChief on Feb 14, 2012 7:04 AM CST up reply actions

This is starting to make me a bit nervous

Why pay this guy big money when you could just give Carr his pay day? Seems counterproductive. Pioli and Hunt have been preaching about signing the guys they draft. Letting Carr walk and signing Routt makes no sense to me.

by ExRoyalsFan on Feb 13, 2012 5:59 PM CST reply actions

If that's the case

Then I would probably take it. Routt isn’t a terrible corner, and he’d have more help in our secondary than Oakland gave him.

I’d rather sign Carr cheaper but still….

Finnegan

Is wanting a contract for 5 to 6 years in the $10mil/yr range… Wanting and gettting are two different things but I think with the way Carr is going to see himself and the way KC is going to look at him, I wouldnt be surprised if he and KC are $3-$4mil/yr apart in a contract. I cant see Carr wanting less money than any CB on the market this year and I dont see KC giving him more money than Flowers. I also dont see him giving KC a hometown discount.
I hate to say it but I think Carr is as good as gone this year.

What a year! At least we have the Royals... Oh Wait!

Bowe

Only if Bowe is signed… If they get the feeling that Bowe would/will take more of a KC discount they will tag him and work on a long term deal.

by KSU-Chief on Feb 13, 2012 7:22 PM CST up reply actions

well, obviously if they can come to terms with Bowe, Carr will get tagged if he won't come to terms.

the big thing is that neither one of them have re-signed yet, and you can only tag one of them…

the big question is why is this going down to the wire?

"At one point in your life you either have the thing you want or the reasons why you don't "

by chief Stevie_k on Feb 13, 2012 7:31 PM CST up reply actions

It is going down to the wire because that is what sometimes happens with good players

Every player is different. It isnt like KC is going about this any differently than they did with Hali, JC, Flowers or DJ. Some guys have a different idea of what they are worth.

What a year! At least we have the Royals... Oh Wait!

by KSU-Chief on Feb 13, 2012 7:33 PM CST up reply actions

Why is every other NFL team going down to the wire with their FAs?

It happens every year. These negotiations take forever, it’s a ton of money with all sorts of incentives, bonuses, etc. to deal with.

by cheapham on Feb 13, 2012 9:17 PM CST up reply actions

If it was easy

one side wouldn’t have done their job, and got screwed. That’s just the nature of negotiations, when there’s that much at stake.

Exactly

That’s why the raiders would announce signings all the damn time. When your owner/GM irresponsibly throws money all over the place (hence Routt’s current situation), it’s a bad situation.

by cheapham on Feb 13, 2012 9:23 PM CST up reply actions

And yet all the other big names were locked up way earlier.

None of the guys who got re-signed got screwed. They got paid fairly well.

I think the point is, Carr wants more money than Flowers, and Bowe most likely thinks he is as good as Fitz, which he isn’t even on the same level.

Routt isn't well liked in Raiderland after commiting (a league high) 17 penalties for holding, PI, illegal use oth, and personal fouls

Apparently both Routt and Seymour had a bunch of whiny give up moments in 2011.

by chief Stevie_k on Feb 13, 2012 7:32 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

Carr is probably asking more than Flowers and knows that he’s arguably the number 1 FA in the league. Routt on the other hand just got cut for gettin paid way too much and not producing like a number 1 CB. Pioli and Routt’s agent knows that where ever he goes he’s gonna get a huge pay cut…why not sign Routt for cheap and see if you can’t win a bidding war for Carr since everyone should know that’s whats gonna end up happening.

by tgitth on Feb 13, 2012 8:06 PM CST up reply actions

I like Carr, but there are really good pending FA CBs this year.

If they could get Bowe re-signed, then the whole Carr issue is basically settled for at least another year (franchise tag).

But the longer this draws out with neither unsigned, the more likely it seems we will lose one.

$63 million in cap space

We’re signing Bowe, Carr, and Routt for depth. However, I’ve seen so many cap space figures thrown out lately, I’ve really got no idea how much we have.

by Chief Willie Wildcat on Feb 13, 2012 6:28 PM CST reply actions

So long Brandon Carr

Routt is going to sign with someone before free agency starts. He isn’t going to wait for a bunch of other CB’s to flood the market. This doesn’t bode well.

The Chiefs may be just doing research but they have to at least be toying with the possibility of offering Routt a deal before FA starts that makes me think they likely aren’t even considering using the franchise tag on Carr.

That means Bowe gets the tag if no deal is reached. Unless they are out of their minds.

Maybe not

Maybe they get the feeling that Carr is going to walk. Or they’ve made an offer and he laughed it off.

I’m sure the people doing the negotiating have a better “feel” for whether or not a deal is going to be made. Maybe the Chiefs think the chances of re-signing Carr are not good. We don’t know the details. And probably never will.

Damnit.

My understanding with FA is that they can’t sign (don’t know if they can even work out with other teams or talk money) until the FA period officially begins in March. Since Routt was waived, is he eligible for signing right now?

Can I just say this...

Being $63mil under the cap doesnt mean that you start signing players to more than they are worth. If Carr is wanting $11mil/yr then I dont care how far under the cap we are that isnt a good contract for KC. It is different if you are signing a guy to a 1 yr deal, then go right ahead and pay him $13mil because he will be off the cap the next year.
You also dont FT a player if you dont think you can either trade him or work on a long term deal.(unless you think that player is the one you NEED to win a SB). If KC put the FT on Carr this year for $10.6mil, he would have all the power in the negotiations. If KC wanted to keep him and they cant work out a deal then it would cost us $12.72mil to tag him next year.

What a year! At least we have the Royals... Oh Wait!

by KSU-Chief on Feb 13, 2012 7:30 PM CST reply actions

well
You also dont FT a player if you dont think you can either trade him or work on a long term deal.

If you could have worked out a long-term deal, most of the time you don’t have to franchise tag them.

And….

If you have to franchise tag them, generally that means there is a lot of interest in said player. AKA you can trade him. Scrubs do not generally get franchised….

therefore, the above quote just doesn’t seem to stick.

Carr must really feel disrespected

Pioli doesn’t even attempt to resign him during the regular season after watching Charles, DJ, and Flowers getting extensions during the season. Now he brings in a chump from Oakland who got over paid and cut a year later. Carr is gone and I wouldn’t blame him.

How do you know he didn't try to re-sign him?

He said in his interview with Nick Wright about a month back

Tried to find a link but couldn’t. Wright asked him if he was hurt that they didn’t try to get anything done during the season and he said yeah a little, it’s nice to be wooed and being made felt appreciated.

I'm pretty sure once he signed his tender we were unable to re-sign him due to the jump in his salary. At least that's what was reported.

So that would mean that either Pioli doesn’t know what he’s doing or he made a pretty conscious decision to roll the dice on getting Carr done after the year.

What Tarkus asked

How on earth do we know they weren’t trying to sign him? If anything, Pioli’s MO has been to do this stuff during the season, not at the last minute.

I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.

Carr has stated he wants to stay here

Remaining in KC is his first option, so I don’t think he would turn down an extension if Pioli was trying, unless his offer was a slap in the face.

by KcChiefsMo on Feb 13, 2012 9:25 PM CST up reply actions

Pioli and RAC have both said they want him back.

Talk is cheap. For both sides.

if by 'slap in the face' you mean an offer not bigger than the one Flowers got (around $8 MM/yr)

then yes, you’re probably right…the offer probably was a ‘slap in the face.’

Pioli is not going to grossly overpay someone.

What we do know is that all the other core players on the team have gotten rewarded fairly in the monetary compensation of their new contracts. Why should we expect anything different with Bowe and Carr?

More likely is that while, yeah Carr would like to stay in KC, he knows Gunter wants him in Detroit, and being from Michigan, Carr is completely fine going there….

This has adulterous affair written all over it.

I would think Pioli is a genius

if some how he managed to sign Rhoutt and then tag Carr knowing he has a serious suitor and using him as trade bait. I’d take an extra pick in the 1st or top of the 2nd for Carr.

I think that

This is proof that Carr is wanting Flowers money. As much as I like Carr, I think he is not better than Flowers.

Another thing with Routt is that he doesn’t have any help on the other side. Here he has Flowers on the other side, Arenas in the Nickel and then Berry and Lewis at Safety. He was having to do everything on that field and I am willing to bet that half of those penalties were because of that.

by ForeverRanger91 on Feb 13, 2012 9:30 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Why would KC even contemplate paying Routt 2/3 of Flowers' deal but not Carr?

Pioli has not shown himself to be a tightwad re-signing our core. If Carr only wanted $5.5 MM/yr or so, he’d already be re-signed.

Routt could be a good alternative if the price is right. big if.

otherwise, it isn’t as if there aren’t any real upgrades in FA.

For the price Carr MAY want, we could possibly sign a guy like Courtland Finnegan.

Hopefully..

Pioli knows what he’s doing.. I want Carr to be signed and forget about Routt. Unless Pioli has a trick up his sleeve and gets both for a good price! to create some depth

There is absolutely nothing wrong with bringing in a free agent at a position that you may have a huge hole. It’s called due dilligence, and Carr shouldn’t be upset by that, otherwise he is in a overly sensitive douche.

by Topchief1 on Feb 13, 2012 10:39 PM CST reply actions

Wouldn't bother me none

Routt is a solid #2 corner. I don’t understand all the hype with Carr recently. Yea he’s a pretty good player but he damn sure isn’t an elite corner and shouldn’t be paid like one. I like Carr better but if he walked I wouldn’t be too disappointed if we signed Routt. People seem to forget 2 years ago Nnamdi and Routt we’re considered in the top 5 CB tandems in the league. Even thought he is a Raider you still gotta respect game.

carr is a big physical corner, something routt is not.

this team needs brandon carr for that reason

Yeah, Carr is 1" shorter and 10lb heavier.

Nothing really game breaking in either direction.

It's no fun if I have to explain it.

by TRSChief on Feb 14, 2012 7:10 AM CST up reply actions

Why

Why go down this road??? Sign carr or tag him

by Kcc on Feb 13, 2012 11:57 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Better yet

Give carr the contract if you ask me the chump from pkland is not worth the 50 million his contract he had in oaky dokie land carr is worth the 50mil and if we pick up the most penalized corner, player on oakland don’t we have to take up the contract he left on. If so think pioli. Carr is a better corner

agreed.

Just because he comes in to talk, doesn’t mean we’ll sign him.

lol

If the Chiefs Brass fails to sign Carr, ie, lets him go over a million or 2, and signs a cornerback that probably had the worst season in the league for a starting cornerback in 2011 -ie, for a whole lot less money, and still convinces everybody here that they are trying to win a superbowl.. … well, that’s the coup de gra of spin from a GM’s office. I mean, somebody will have to give them a trophy, yeah, they will win the SUPERBOWL of bullshitting.

by rdc on Feb 14, 2012 8:06 AM CST reply actions

I say offer him a #2 CB contract.

Low-ball him just a little. He got fat paid by the Raiders last year, so he can afford to take a bit of a paycut based on his actual play last year. Routt would be better than drafting a CB. Probably a top 5 #2 FA CB.

We’ll see what happens. I’ve said all along one of these two guys, Bowe or Carr, would be gone. It’ll come down to how much money they want and who we can stand to lose more than the other. I think Carr is more important, but also most likely to walk away.

2012 Chiefs Draft Picks by Falcon58: CB Kirkpatrick/G DeCastro 1st rd, WR Wright/OT Adams or Sanders 2nd rd, QB Foles/ILB Cole 3rd rd, TE M. Williams/RB I. Pead 4th rd, S G. Iloka or DT/NT Hicks 5th rd, RB L. Dunbar or ILB Galippo 6th; FA Signings: NT Poliai or Hill; Resign: Carr, Bowe, Orton, McClain, Gordon, Belcher. Trade Dorsey for picks, promote Gordon to DT/DE.

by Falcon58 on Feb 14, 2012 9:24 AM CST reply actions

I think the Chiefs are just getting Carr's attention.

Personally I think there is a very small chance the Chiefs let Carr go. Unless he is asking for outrageous numbers. The Chiefs are playing it smart and looking at all there options. Maybe Routt will take a little cut just for the chance to play the Raiders twice a year. Revenge is sweet. Carr now knows the Chiefs have options. Maybe the Chiefs are doing this to put a little pressure on Carr to sign now. So if needed they can tag Bowe. We really don’t know all the facts and have to just trust our front office.

GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
