Options At Quarterback for 2012

I'm with most of the people here on AP: the Chiefs need to upgrade the quarterback position. We've got some great young talent on this team. We just need the right quarterback for us. What options are there? Let's take a look.

*Matt Cassel: He joined the Chiefs in 2009 and so far he's been very inconsistent. He's got some great leadership qualities but he holds on to the ball too long and his arm strength doesn't scare anyone. He's had some good games here: he's also had plenty of bad games. But after three seasons I haven't seen much progress from him and I think it's time to move on.

*Kyle Orton: He stepped in and performed very well during the last three games. Many of us are clamoring for him to be the starter next year. I'd like to see him do that. However, he didn't play all that well at the beginning of 2011 and he ended up being waived by Denver. He's never been spectacular but he's a good stop-gap player and could help give the offense life next season.

*Ricky Stanzi: My personal man-crush. I liked seeing what he could do in the 2011 preseason. He didn't get any true playing time last year (much to my dismay). I was ready for the Chiefs to start him after the loss to Pittsburgh. He's probably still pretty raw but I'd like to see what he could do in 2012. The team might be favored to win the division next year and if Stanzi sucks, then it might be a wasted opportunity to take control of the West.

*Peyton Manning: A lot of people on here would love to see Mr. Big Forehead playing for the Chiefs in 2012. That would be quite a sight to see. But he will be an expensive target for us and his neck is still a cause for concern. Out of all the options, he's the biggest risk/reward player out there.

*Matt Moore: He's still under contract with the Dolphins next year but new HC Joe Philbin may want to bring in his own guy and Moore could be released. If he is waived, then I believe the Chiefs will take a long hard look at him. He's not a dazzler but he's good enough to win some games. Daboll was calling plays for him last year in Miami and they seemed to mesh well. It might be worth a look.

Now the question remains....

What could we realistically get for Matt Cassel?

Just curious about opinions on his value on the market, or if trading him would be nuts.

Seems like if we sign Orton and draft another mid to late round QB we could trade Cassel away for at least a mid round draft pick. Seems like a logical train of thought, but haven’t seen anyone talking about it.

by Xander Crews on Feb 12, 2012 8:45 PM CST reply actions

IF we could get the 2nd round pick we paid for him back from another team AND we can resign Orton I would be alright with starting Orton next year.

I have said many times that neither Cassel nor Orton are the long term answer at QB. Cassel is a ‘little’ bit better overall than Orton, but it is not an overwelming advantage by any means.

An additional 2nd rounder could be huge to the real Chiefs QBOTF (Stanzi) and allow for us to address G, RT, and TE in the first 2 rounds. Give the draft picks 2-6 full games playing together to ‘gel’ then bench Cassel/Orton and give the keys to the Offense to Stanzi.

by DivineGrace on Feb 12, 2012 9:01 PM CST up reply actions

I disagree with cassell being better than orton I think its the other way around with orton being slightly better than cassell.

I was being nice also, orton is alot better than cassell from what I have seen. gets rid of the ball faster, better thrown ball, more accurate, faster reads ( cassell has no read actually he just locks on one guy ) orton actually has a deep ball he can throw, thats alot to me.

the eyes dont usually lie either when its that big a difference watching it.

by kc-twitch on Feb 12, 2012 9:10 PM CST up reply actions

Doubt anyone will give a 2

maybe a 3-5th round pick…even a 3rd is a stretch. But I do think we could trade Dorsey for a 3rd at the very least. Sign Peyton, draft Foles, and let him sit and learn behind “The Brain.” Draft OL first and second round (DeCastro OG/ Sanders OT), be a sweet set up IMO. Wishful thinking but it’d get me hot in the pants if it happened.

If you think any team might be willing to give a 2nd round pick for Cassel

I’ve got a bridge in Brooklyn I’d like to sell you. Only one team was willing to roll the dice on him, and Cassel has now shown he’s not a winner. If we can’t find someone much better, we need to settle for Orton while the search goes on.

Ancora imparo.

by midcalchief on Feb 12, 2012 9:15 PM CST up reply actions

Didn't say we could get a 2nd, only said that IF we could (I did capitlizie the IF) we could get a 2nd and resign Orton, then we sould make the trade and let Orton play.

Short of that (getting a 2nd for Cassel), let Orton walk…draft a G, RT, and TE, start Cassel for the first 2-6 games to give the new O-Line time to ‘gel’ then start Stanzi.

If Stanzi is not the Manzi, then we can draft a 1st round QB next season (which is shaping up to be a deeper draft for QBs anyway), and he (the new QB) can start with a O-Line that won’t get him killed. (Lets face it, our O-Line let not one but TWO QB’s get injured last year).

by DivineGrace on Feb 12, 2012 9:50 PM CST up reply actions

im all for trading him.

I dont think any price is to cheap honestly, he only cost 5+million this year but next year its alot more and everyone knows he is not what we need nor will he ever be if not by now. cut our loss while we can and get some value while maybe some teams think there could be potential there and he is younger meaning more value, either way if he is not on the roster he cant play for us which would be great.

by kc-twitch on Feb 12, 2012 9:07 PM CST up reply actions

that's kind of what I was thinking.

At this point no one seems to believe he has shown enough to be considered “The Guy” for us. The window for us to trade him for anything of value is closing. If we signed Orton, and Stanzi is coming along at an acceptable pace, I think now would be the time to deal Cassel.

If we want to take a run at Peyton or RG3, it might be a good idea to keep Cassel. Peyton could get hurt, and a safety net behind a rookie wouldn’t hurt.

by Xander Crews on Feb 12, 2012 9:52 PM CST up reply actions

Xander, I believe

that Dallas, who’s in desperate need of a back up QB, would give a 4th for Cassel.Possibly a 5th next year w/incentives to become a 4th in next years draft.

What about

RG3? Could there be a chance Pioli thinks putting him with Charles in the backfield is worth trading away some high picks for this year and next year?

I thought about putting RGIII on this poll but I'm not sure Pioli would be willing to trade away the farm just to get him.

man the choices are overwhelming

1) Cassel a slab of meat with mittens
2) Orton the communist that hates to finish from the Red zone
3) Stanzi..the great unknown
4)Pey pey the pain in the neck
5)Matt Moore see Cassel

Not at all likely scenario

what the hell else we got to talk about, here goes.
1) Redskins acquire Manning
2) Dolphins acquire Flynn
3) Chiefs trade Cassel, our 1st and a 3rd next year for their 1st
4)Chiefs trade their #3 overall pick to St Louis along with Dorsey and a 3rd this year
5) We draft RG3
Its alot to give up,… but would you do it?

by tomachop on Feb 12, 2012 9:49 PM CST reply actions

Lol

I honestly would give up two first rounders and two second rounders for RG3. Its honestly a similar deal to how much raiders had to give up for Carson Palmer. It is basically a second round pick more since we get a first round pick back for two firsts and two seconds.

by andrew33 on Feb 12, 2012 9:54 PM CST up reply actions

that just makes me realize how shitty that trade was for the raiders haha

except

the fact that RG3 gets the ball out of his hands as fast and strong as Elway did.

And the fact that RG3 looks similar to Jamaal Charles running the ball.

And the fact that RG3 is just as great passing the ball as running the ball unlike Vick (minus one year).

by andrew33 on Feb 12, 2012 9:57 PM CST up reply actions

yea i probably not talk to much about it

I dont follow enough college football to say i know enough about him.. Just seems those running QBs are good for that x factor but never seem to make the big one. I guess though if his arm is solid, then he would be even more deadly

by TheScreenName on Feb 13, 2012 12:29 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

I feel like

a lot of fans just put him in that Vick category, but I think he is much better than Vick at throwing the ball. He does run, but he is primarily a throwing QB. I could see him running a decent amount as Newton is early in his career, and transition to stop running so much in the late stages of his career.

Vick didn’t even complete 60% of his passes in college. RG3? 72%.

who says we'll run a spread option offense

It’s just another great attribute to have. Especially when we have a suspect OL. A QB with big arm strength, accuracy on the deep pass and pocket awareness is awesome. Being mobile just adds another dimension to the offense. Another the defense has to plan around only helps the offense

Steve Young?

That’s my closest comparison. A guy who passes first, but defenses also have to worry about taking off and running. Rodgers is similar, but I’m not going to compare RG3 to Rodgers…yet….

I'm with you. He might be the missing piece

To an incredible offense. With all the tools we already have on offense(re-sign bowe!), what he brings to the table could really push us over the top.

by Xander Crews on Feb 12, 2012 10:21 PM CST up reply actions

Don't get me wrong...RGIII could be a great QB...elite even.

That said he has played 0 downs in the NFL. The history books are FILLED with ‘could have been’ / ‘should have been’ sure fire QB’s taken in the first round that ended up being busts.

Now that I think about it more, at least the Raiders traded for a known ‘pro-bowl’ QB that had already proven he could be effective in the NFL. For as good as RGIII ‘might be’…he has done NOTHING (in the NFL) yet.

I stand by my ‘dumb as a box of rocks’ making a Raider like trade for an unproven (at the NFL level) QB who may (or may NOT) be a good/great QB.

by DivineGrace on Feb 12, 2012 10:27 PM CST up reply actions

So you would

rather have Palmer than RG3 after thinking about it?

I believe our team can still succeed because we have more playmakers than a lot of teams, even if RG3 doesnt turn out so well.

Also the first round pick and the other 2 second round picks aren’t guaranteed locks either. If two of those dont pan out and one does hypothetically, it would be a better risk to just go with RG3 because he has such great intangibles, great skill set, and great successes in his college seasons.

by andrew33 on Feb 13, 2012 1:35 AM CST up reply actions

I think that trading that many draft picks would NOT be wise....for either.

The difference is the Raider know/knew that Palmer has played at a high level….the same can not be said for RGIII (at least not in the NFL).

Listen, you want to trade multiple high level draft picks for muiltiple years that is your deal…who knows IF RGIII is an ‘elite’ QB, and IF our O-Line that let two different QB get injured last year dosn’t get him killed then it would be worth it, but do you really think that he will be THAT good (elite) behind OUR O-Line???

by DivineGrace on Feb 13, 2012 3:24 AM CST up reply actions

Yep, stay the course of mediocrity.

That is the safe way to go, and will win lots of super bowls.

by Mr.Pibbs on Feb 13, 2012 7:48 AM CST up reply actions

I mean

if Charles stays healthy, I believe he will stay clean during games. And have you seen RG3? The guy is extremely elusive and I believe our O line is good enough with a competent QB.

Did our O line get killed when Orton was in town? It looked much better with him than Cassel or Palko. Now we are talking about RG3 who has the threat to run and pass, not to mention having Charles in the backfield makes the D back off on pass rushes.

by andrew33 on Feb 13, 2012 1:09 PM CST up reply actions

Did you see our O-Line let TWO QB get injured last year. (including Orton)

Trade the farm for a QB that plays a couple of games before being sent to the Hospital. What are we left with….no QB, no draft picks, no hope of EVER becomeing a good team.

my understanding is that on orton's finger injury it was sort of a freak play, a busted flea-flicker or something

that was probably less on the OLine and more on bad play to begin with or something

and still not sure how Cassel go hurt to begin with

I don’t see the skins getting Manning unless he is not healthy enough for other teams. I think he’ll want to go to a team than can win right away with him. Dolphins would be a little better, but I see him looking elsewhere.

I’m on the brink of hopping on the RG3 bandwagon simply because he’d be the most exciting to watch. With RG3’s ability to run, Charles, McCluster, a re-signed Bowe, Moeaki, Breaston, and Baldwin we would be an absolute nightmare to game plan against.

that would for sure lock us up for the number one draft pick next year. Will play a bunch of nobodies and hope one of them becomes a somebody, then get a draft pick out of him. Then, we can trade Palko for a water bottle and a bag of sunflower seeds. Might have to pay for the bag of seeds, but will try anyways. Seems so simple. No way I sell the farm for RGIII.

The success of some rookie QB’s have many thinking that it is almost a guarantee that RGIII will be a good NFL QB. How many of you had even heard of him before this season? I mean some of you are willing to risk setting this team back 3 years, by giving away what you think this guy is worth. There will be another RGIII next season, the season after………….

There are “can’t miss” QB’s every year, in the draft. I remember Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, J. Russel, Tim Couch, Matt Leinhart, David Carr, Vince Young?, our own Todd Blackledge, Rick Mirer, Todd Marinovich and Dan McGuire. Yep! All can’t miss QB’s! The failure list far exceeds the success list, and the odds are that some team is gonna do just what many of you want, and get a bust. The risks of giving up multiple high draft picks and even throwing in some veteran players (who we would also have to replace) is a recipe for potential long term failure.

I propose we fill the holes in the O-line, the D-line, add a LB or 2,.add some depth at other key positions, and provide whoever our QB is, the tools to succeed, with also a new O-Coordinator. If he doesn’t, well we haven’t sold the farm and the future. Maybe a one year setback, at worse. More likely still a pretty good season. I’ve been watching the NFL for 45 years, and all I can say is" be careful what you ask for."

I am going to defend a couple of the QB you listed.

David Carr: Guy had no line in front of him….Peyton Manning would have done no better than Carr.

Vince Young: All this guy did was WIN. The issue was Jeff Fisher (So glad we didn’t pick up this POS Coach) and his “I don’t want him so I am going to do everything I can to make SURE he fails” bull-sh!t, even WITH J-Fish trying to sick ‘it’ in his bum-bum Young STILL won game after game after game.

The point of your post “RGIII could be a bust just like anyone else”, why leverage YEARS of draft picks for someone who could be a HUGE bust…I agree with 100% though!

agree with Carr especially ... which is why it's vital that we draft DeCastro :-)

see how I snuck in that small advertisement?)

to add further

Akili Smith, Jamarcus Russel and Ryan Leaf had red flags all over them. Huge mistakes. But if you want to look at 1st round QB for every Leaf there is a Manning. For every Blackledge there is a Marino. For every Tim Couch there is a Donovan McNabb.

KC Draft prediction: No OT taken in first round

Between ALL of the QB you mentioned.

One of them (Manning) has won ONE Super Bowl.

by DivineGrace on Feb 14, 2012 6:19 AM CST up reply actions

are you REALLY trying to compare past KC draft picks to a first round QB?

when was the last time KC took a 1st round QB?
i’ll give you some time to check the historical archives

85 I believe

that didn’t work out too well, so I guess we should never make that mistake again huh. Its only been…what 27 years.

I smell a T-Shirt

“I bought a bottle of your damn ketchup, give me a damn QB.”

Seems subtle enough.

This could make you a millionaire!

Hell yeah

I would too. I wonder… Would I get double taxed buying my own shirt? Sales tax and then tax for selling it?

Two words...

Tyler Palko! He can throw the Hail Mary like noone else…

For Hail Mary’s, Palko > Brady….

If Wheeden is there in the third rd, the Chiefs should take him.

If he were not 28 he would be a first rd pick. He could compete with Cassel.

by Mustang fever on Feb 14, 2012 12:39 PM CST reply actions

I actually like that pick...

But don’t think he will last to Rd. 3….

by AnkenyChiefsFan on Feb 14, 2012 3:20 PM CST up reply actions

Out of all of the things the Chiefs and Orton have said,

it doesn’t sound like he will re-sign. Peyton Manning is unrealistic. Have you seen Pioli bring in a big name FA? No, he works through the draft. Look for him to bring in someone maybe like Matt Moore to battle it out with Cassel in ST, then draft one of the many QB’s next draft
