My Chiefs Offseason based off of scenarios

Throughout any offseason for any team there are many things that can happen from one day to the next. The biggest talk of this offseason for every team lacking a true "Franchise QB" is of course Peyton Manning. The Manning factor is just one scenario that plays into my offseason. I will also do a non Manning scenario for those who say they want to see what Cassel can do with one more year. Manning or no Manning all I care about is the Chiefs meeting there Goals as a team and giving me, an avid Chiefs fan, something to look forward to every Sunday afternoon other than of course spending time with my beautiful wife. So here goes my Mock offseason.....

Star-divide

Manning Scenario

Free Agency:

Peyton Manning: is signed to an incentive laden contract to protect the organization. If he hits all of his escalators then it will definitely be worth it to pay him whatever his contract ends up being.

Dwayne Bowe: is signed to the tune of 5 years $45 million a year. If you heard him on ESPN radio the other day, he sure talked like he was coming back to the Chiefs.

Brandon Carr: is signed to a similar deal as Flowers and the Chiefs lock up there young secondary for the next half decade.

Paul Soliai: he is the best FA NT available and seems to be on his way out of Miami due to there switch to a 4/3. The Chiefs BADLY need a solid NT and this kid comes in and at only 28 he can last another good 4-5 years. You see what DJ did this year behind a declining Old Gregg, as my wife likes to call him, now picture him behind one of the top NT's in football. Head exploding beast mode!

Le'Ron McClain : Most people on AP seem to think there Daboll won't use someone like McClain, but if I remember right in the Miami game this year, didn't there FB have a couple hellacious catches against us? Bring him back and at the very least he can pick up Thomas Jones portion of the carries.

*Mike Tolbert : if you don't resign McClain, Tolbert should be the way the Chiefs go. He won't command huge money, but knows how to share carries and can also play a role in special teams.

Jeff Saturday: While I don't agree with pushing Rodney Hudson back another year, in this scenario Peyton is coming to town and he brings his hand picked Center with him and while learning from Casey Weigman is a great Honor, learning from Jeff Saturday is the Golden Ticket. Only at a 1 year deal though.

* Dan Connolly: If the Chiefs don't bring in Saturday, then they will need a veteran C to back up Rodney Hudson and he has the Patriot Connection.

The Draft:

1st Round - OG David Decastro: with the Chiefs landing Peyton Manning they will need to assure that he is on the Field to make a difference, Decastro is the best Guard prospect in years and the Chiefs shore up the interior of there line for YEARS to come and also give manning a healthy pocket to step up in to.

2nd Round- OT Zebrie Sanders: The Chiefs get a pure Right Tackle in the 2nd Round with Sanders. While many wouldn't have imagined them going O-line with there first two selections the Chiefs need to protect there investment of Manning. This also sets the Chiefs up with a solid line to protect the future franchise QB when that comes.

3rd Round- S Mark Barron: I believe I read that Barron suffered a sports hernia and had to have surgery which will cause him to miss the combine. This allows Barron to slip to the Chiefs.

4th Round - ILB Tank Carder: The Chiefs need someone to compete with Jovan Belcher and Tank Carder can step in and instantly help on special teams while competing for playing time.

5th Round - TE Michael Eggnew: As the Chiefs follow the Patriot way, they need another TE and Eggnew can catch the ball pretty well as he showed at the Zou.

6th Round - RB Terrance Gannaway: Add's depth to the running backfield and can also step come in on heavy packages with McClain in goaline situations

7th round- NT Hebron Fangupo: What a name huh? Comes in to add some depth to our NT position. Hopefully we can get some great value from this big guy 6'1" 331.

Non Peyton Manning Scenario

Free Agency:

Bowe, Carr, McClain and Connolly for all the reasons I stated above.

Devin Thomas: Bring him in to be our 4th Reciever. With Urban as a FA the Chiefs need some depth. They have Bowe, Baldwin, Breaston, Horn, so they sign Thomas who can also help on special teams as he showed in the playoffs.

Joel Dreessen: Veteran Presence that can help our TE Depth. He can block Solidly and has shown he has hands as he always catches Multiple TD's throughout the year. I remember back in 2010 when we played them I believe he tore us up.

Carl Nicks: The Chiefs need an upgrade at the Guard position and while Nicks will cost some money, the Chiefs have the cap room and he is young so he will be worth it.

James Sanders: The Chiefs showed interest in Sanders when he was cut by the Patriots earlier this year so why would they not be interested now? The Chiefs need depth behind Eric Berry and Sabby isn't cutting it. I don't know about anyone else but he wanted to puke every time he was on the field.

*Matt Flynn: If the price is right, bring someone in to compete with Cassel. I know I will catch some heat for that one from most fans because they say Stanzi should be the one to compete with Cassel. While I don't disagree, I don't agree either. If the Chiefs front office believes that they need to bring someone in than bring Matt Flynn in and see what happens, as I said, if the price is right.

The Draft:

1st Round- RB Trent Richardson: While many of you say this is a luxury pick, I agree and disagree. If Kalil and Rieff are off the board and Richardson is still here than you go with him without hesitation. This gives the Chiefs the best runnging Backfield in the NFL without Richardson even playing a down. The kid is a physical freak that can run flat through you, around you, or over you. If Cassel is the starter then Chiefs fans know you need a running game to help him play at a pro bowl level ala 2010.

2nd Round- NT Dontari Poe: If Poe Slips to us then its another gift and another no brainer. He is another Physical freak that carries his weight crazily, is that a word?, well.

3rd Round- S Mark Barron: as in my other Scenario Barron falls to us due to his injury. a late 1st to early 2nd round talent falls to us in the 3rd. He can compete with Lewis for the starting postition.

4th Round- OT Andrew Datko: He is a medium risk high reward player. He has first round talent but has been injury prone. If he can stay healthy the Chiefs get a steal in the 4th.

5th Round- WR Ryan Broyles: Another risky player that can help the chiefs with depth and a deep threat if he pans out.

6th Round-QB Chandler Harnish: Mobile QB that has a decent arm. A great project that could turn out to be huge if he develops like he should.

7th round- ILB Audi Cole: Comes in to add depth and has the potential to turn into a decent starter. Can definitely help on special teams.

As you can see, Peyton can Change the whole tune of the offseason. I'm not for or against Peyton coming KC. All I care about is the Chiefs winning and becoming a perenial playoff contender. I'm sorry if this bothers some of you because it "isn't in the right section" or "should have been in the draft talk section" but I worked hard on it and I hope you enjoy it. I also, apologize that it kind of tailed off at the end but it is late. As always......

GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!

Like the Manning scenario--non Manning.....not so much

If we don’t get PM then we need Soliai even more.

And if we sign everyone else you listed I would say we need DeCastro & Sanders even more as Cassell has proven he needs time in the pocket and no pressure to be effective.

We can only hope your Manning scenario works out—that would be a team that would inspire hope and be a lot of fun to watch and root for.

In the scenario without Peyton we draft a NT and while we don’t draft decastro we still get a top G in zeitler and a tackle prospect in Datko. If we need to sign some tackle competition in FA then we do it. But we get the best runningback since AP and we don’t need soliai with Poe who is the top NT in the draft. Those were just my thoughts in the 2nd scenario

by Chiefs Nation 24 on Feb 11, 2012 10:45 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

Or you could still get Soliai with the first draft

Or Nicks/1st round OT with the second draft

Agree almost 100% with the Peyton scenario

I would however prefer the following for the draft:

OT Jonathan Martin – Rd 1
LB Vontaze Burficit – Rd 2
DE Franklin Alexander – Rd 3

Bringing P. Manning and J Saturday (1 yr) would be huge due to the obvious familiarity.

This is with me hoping that Burficit's character issues

drop him to us in the 2nd

I wouldn't touch Burfict if he dropped to 4th round

and what is it that people think Manning is so “familiar” with regarding Saturday … his butt? come on, man … it’s the same football regardless who snaps it to him, and Saturday is about as over the hill as Weigs …

it’s time to start Hudson

really it is

wow ... great work and all, but I sure disagree with Jeff Saturday ... really, that's a Carl Peterson move if I ever saw one

and your first draft was far, far, far better that your second … but hey, lots of work, great stuff :-)

I would be ok with Saturday IF it was a true competition with Hudson

I wouldn’t bring him in and just hand him the job, there are worse people for Hudson to learn from than Weigs and Saturday

Way I see it

Hudson will win, so I’m not concerned about that. Saturday would bring good depth and a good mentor to Hudson.

what if you delete Payton Manning

from the first scenario and add Kyle Orton(maybe Jason Campbell) with thats list of free agents and draft? looks pretty good to me!

by stuck in denver on Feb 11, 2012 11:09 AM CST reply actions

Not a bad thought...going with Orton may prove good step while building team for QB to be named later.

What we see by difference in scenarios is that how Pioli plays the FA game will have huge effect on the draft.

for a minute I thought you said "while building the QBotF" and thought "now that would be cool ... build our own QB

just get a kit at QBs-R-Us

thats even better than drafting one!

who needs the draft now?! we just found way to be a dynasty! can we get a NT too please?

by stuck in denver on Feb 11, 2012 11:30 AM CST reply actions

Saturday would be a waste

Connely or Koppen makes sense as veteran depth

Hudson is the starter, and will be very good.
I think Lilja starts in 2012, unless DeCastro is the pick.

by stagdsp on Feb 11, 2012 11:55 AM CST via mobile reply actions

i like the Sanders option

Or a similar type S for depth

I don’t see Nicks getting paid in KC

by stagdsp on Feb 11, 2012 12:01 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

sign Carr and Bowe

get Soliai and a qb (orton preferably, maybe Flynn) via FA
draft DeCastro, Fleener or Sanders in the second, and Barron,
obtain a vet FA for depth at rb ala Bush or Law firm or draft one in the later rnds
depth in the later rnds Audie Cole etc

by tomachop on Feb 11, 2012 2:22 PM CST reply actions

S barron's injury wont make him slip missing the combine, look at micheal crabtree.

they dont just go off the combine on judging players, although I think it is 30% of what they go off of, the other 70% I think they get from just watching game tapes and what not.

by kc-twitch on Feb 11, 2012 6:08 PM CST reply actions

It will be more important to Barron as people want to see his hips in the drills

Also REC’d for all the time/effort

Nice work

Love #1 (with or without Pey Pey)

by Hateraide on Feb 13, 2012 2:54 PM CST reply actions

Barron to the third?

Even with a hernia, I have a hard time believing he’d slip that far. But who knows, I’d love him at that value for sure.

Can’t see Saturday leaving. Seems like he’s a “Colts or retire” kinda guy and I think they’ve already offered him an exec job.

I like the idea of Tolbert and Dreessen being picked up. Would love to see them make Carl Nicks a priority.
