Around SBN: Ryder Hesjedal Wins Giro d'Italia

He's playing in Canada. 6-4 325. Watch how fast he is for his size, plus he's super strong.

I'd love him as a late round developmental guy

He was originally going to LSU, but I think had academic problems so off to Canada he went.

Interesting

Academic standards at Canadian universities are traditionally higher than at US colleges iirc.

It was recruiting violations..

He was paid(moving) to come from his junior college…so he left LSU, so they wouldn’t get in trouble..

oh, ok. Thx for clearing that up

he sure doesn't look or play like he is 325 lbs...

its just hard to tell if he is that good, or the guys he’s on the field with aren’t that good.

In any case, the dude doesn’t like like a NT. Maybe DE?

From the video it looks like the other guys are pretty small... hence why he over powers them.

Then he puts himself into position… making himself look faster than he actually would be against higher caliber players.

I’d pass and see if we couldn’t get him as a UDFA.

Go Chiefs!!!!

he dominated at East~West Bowl..

Already predicted 4-5 rd….a lot of talk about him from the coaches..

by cyberry on Feb 11, 2012 10:03 AM CST up reply actions

Yep

If we haven’t taken a DE before then, I think he’d definitely be worth a 4-5 rd pick. He probably wouldn’t be ready for a couple of years, but looks like he has the athletic talent to be a stud.

I'd pass on him all together but I'm no GM

he just looks so slow

CBS qoute:

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Offensive and defensive linemen began to stand out Wednesday at the East-West Shrine Game practice, where one of the biggest stories was from the far north — Canada.

Eh?

Well-traveled defensive lineman Akiem Hicks was impressive for a second successive day. Hicks played high school and junior college football in Sacramento, Calif., area. But after being at the center of a LSU recruiting controversy in 2010, he wound up playing for the University of Regina in Canada the past two seasons.

Hicks (6-5, 324 pounds) is one of the largest players on the field, but the most surprising aspect of his game is his impressive movement, showing nimble feet and fast hands. He definitely has some work to do before he is NFL-ready, but he has raw ability. Hicks isn’t a natural bender and has very ordinary initial explosion out of his stance. But he does have an 84-inch wingspan and used those long limbs to dominate blockers and prove to pro teams he should be drafted in April.

NFLDraftScout.com has considered Hicks as a seventh-round or free-agent projection, but if he continues to impress, he certainly could climb on some charts.

It does speak volumes that LSU was recruiting him, and apparently wanted him that bad (to throw money at him).

still think he’ll have to woo some coaches with impressive workout results.

And he sure doesn’t look like an NT.

I'd be happy to have him at DE

He is an interesting choice

Think of him in terms of someone like Vaughn Martin with the Chargers. The level of play at Canadian universities is much below that of the top US colleges. He will probably take a couple of years to get up to speed but as a 4th round choice he would be worth the investment for a team that can afford to wait. In fairness to this guy, Martin only played two years before he was drafted and he didn’t play his high school in the US so this guy may not take as long to reach full potential.

As the token Saskatchewan guy I say he'll yes, but...

Remember that looking fast and strong against the left over guys that were too fat or not athletic enough to play hockey is quite different than looking fast and strong in the NFL.

The views expressed by craig in calgary do not necessarily represent the views of all Canadians.
