Former Broncos Safety Says He's Signing With The Chiefs

Former Denver Broncos safety Kyle McCarthy writes on Twitter that he's agreed to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs. McCarthy, 25, joined the Broncos in 2010 as an undrafted free agent.

McCarthy went to school at Notre Dame. He's listed at 6'1" and 205 pounds. He's a Youngstown, Ohio native.

The Chiefs will get Eric Berry back next season but they're also scheduled to lose three safeties in free agency -- Jon McGraw, Reshard Langford (exclusive rights free agent) and Sabby Piscitelli. But this move is more about special teams than anything else.

McCarthy played in four games in 2011 and eight games in 2010. He has seven total tackles on his career.

McCarthy was released by the Broncos in December and then re-upped with the team for the final month.

He was a cast-off from a pretty decent defense

still…buying more from the scrap heap. I wish some of our “scrap heap” guys were guys that got cut for $$$ reasons and not lack of ability reasons.

Why are we letting go of Jon McGraw again?

Is it because he’s getting to old or what? I like that guy.

by Brad-KC on Feb 10, 2012 9:59 AM CST reply actions

I think it's age

He’s a heady guy, but he just doesn’t have the tools to compete at the same level anymore.

I wouldn't put anyone

on the Palko level.
McGraw had 3 ints and 1 FF… I wouldn’t say he’s a waste of space like Palko

by Brad-KC on Feb 10, 2012 10:19 AM CST up reply actions

Hey!!!

Palko almost completed that hail mary to Brian Urlacher, but it got batted down and intercepted by McCluster for a TD.

Palko had more ints than Mcgraw. Palko > Mcgraw

Shenanigans, McGraw was one of the most consistent players last year

He’s not spectacular but he’s rarely out of position and a great veteran rotational guy that knows the system. He’s obviously not a starter but he’s exactly what is meant by the term “veteran leadership”. Plus he doesn’t break the bank.

by mushin on Feb 10, 2012 10:21 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah I like having Quickdraw around for depth and ST's

I hope starters don’t get injured where he has to come in and start games, then it kind of sucks.

But for spot duty, ST’s and generally knowing what’s going on – good guy to have around.

It's no fun if I have to explain it.

by TRSChief on Feb 10, 2012 2:48 PM CST up reply actions

My only knock on McGraw

is he’s been having issues with injury the last couple of years. Maybe that’s normal for the safety spot, I have no idea. I like having a K-Stater on the team and I think Berry and Lewis are still leaning on his leadership. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him signed for another year either.

by Chief Willie Wildcat on Feb 10, 2012 6:29 PM CST up reply actions

Nawww.

Pioli just took a secret vacation to Scotland to recruit more white guys with the name of Mc. He’s decided Italians are so passe. So, no worries, McGraw will be back, and just add on McCarthy now, too.

That means they may or may not be back, not that they are gone

Are you kidding me, Pioli wouldn’t tell Joel (or anyone else including his coaches) if his hair was thinning, let alone what KC was going to do when FA starts.

Think you read that wrong.

Agreed

I really liked McGraw. I like that soph safety at K-State, reminds me of McGraw

Not the most gifted athelete but has good instincts and could provide some depth or at least a camp body.

Dawkins May Actually Be Done

His last injury plus age and salary make him a long shot to return to Denver…if he ever plays again at all. Definitely surprising they’re letting a young safety go.

Maybe they signed him to help figure out Tebow's complex offensive style

Special teams guys...

“this move is about special teams more than anything else” Why do you need special teamers? If that is the case get new kickers.

by 12t on Feb 10, 2012 11:49 AM CST reply actions

What?

Do you remember those two blocked kicks against Oakland?

Here’s a hint: those weren’t Succup’s fault. There are 11 guys on the field playing special teams, and they all need to be performing at a high level.

by cheapham on Feb 10, 2012 11:51 AM CST up reply actions

yeah...

that is why you use starters. A# 3 safety ain’t blocking Seymour.

by 12t on Feb 10, 2012 12:32 PM CST up reply actions

That was on Hoffman

He didn’t scheme right for Seymour, and didn’t replace the jerry who allowed Seymour in the first time.

New kickers?!?!?!?!

Uhm, we have one of the best kick/punt tandems in the business. Was this a rhetorical statement?

It has nothing to do with kickers...

it’s about trying to find a guy to fill JMc’s role. With the new rules you see few (IMO you shouldn’t see any) kick returns. Same with our punter. Why would we go out and look for special teamers vs. quality back-ups. If i’m knocking anyone…it is Joel.

by 12t on Feb 10, 2012 5:12 PM CST up reply actions

Please replace Sabby

Puhlease!

by ChiefWarPaint on Feb 10, 2012 1:14 PM CST reply actions

Shouldn't even make the final 53

Why are the Chiefs interested in this loser, looks like another J. McGraw/Sabby prototype(slow, unathletic, and supposedly smart waste of a roster spot guy). If Berry are Lewis goes down I really feel good about this guy coming in…what happen to building depth?

by Terell C. on Feb 10, 2012 2:19 PM CST reply actions

building depth

is exactly what they are trying to do… churning the bottom of the roster is an important part of building a deep team.

you can’t get ProBowl players top to bottom… you need some role players, and sometimes you gotta churn through some scrubs to find the right fits

Brings the question:

Who’s more worthless? Palko or Piscitelli?
