Ain't it amazing how my favorite draft resource is mocking a player who I thought was a distinct possibility and which was referenced by me in a comment a few days ago. This guy, Luke Joeckel, is supposed to be the best tackle prospect since Joe Thomas. We all know the value of good tackle play, or the lack of it as well. It is a key element in having a playoff caliber team. Since this is a position in which we have some latitude in, the emergence of Donald Stephenson and a now suspect Brandon Albert, I cannot say this is a great choice as we go forth.
Albert already was in the suspect list due to his contract situation. Now with a back problem he is certainly more suspect than before. It takes a strong back to play football and the amount of weight training these guys do makes the issue take on a new dimension. If you never have had back problems yourself, take my advice and avoid them at all cost. Once you have them, they seem to never go away and it alters your life in what you should and should not do.
While I still like this pick to some extent, I think that it won't happen because if we trade out of the top spot it is likely that a team will trade up for this particular player. Think St.Louis, with a pot full of picks, Philly and Chicago as well. I'm sure other teams are on the list, but having a stud LT is something that is a must have and whoever our GM is will make this call. That is the fun part of having the #1 pick, it gives you the option of some many players and the opportunity to make a very favorable trade.
Of course this is all hyperbole and speculation as we do not even know for sure what the drat order will be. It is certainly a possibility for us to not only have the first pick, but also to draft a guy like this. It certainly, if it happens, is a good spot to be in. The flip side is to have had to endure a season that sucked on so many different levels that it makes you question yourself and your fanaticism for our team of choice. Go Chief's!!!!
