It's only December 7th and the debate over which position we will pick first in the draft is over. We can debate all we want on AP, but it's already done. The pick will be a quarterback.
But what if they...? Nope. It's over. It's done. Arguments for Te'o, Jarvis Jones, et al are moot.
It's very simple.
The Chiefs have only fielded 188 points this season. Only Arizona is worse with 186. That puts us on pace for 250 points for this season - a number I'm not actually comfortable we can hit. 20 other teams have already fielded 250+ points this season in the first 12 games.
Last year we fielded 212 points all season (only St. Louis was worse with a staggeringly bad 193). Only three teams this year have fielded fewer through 12 games. Those teams are, of course, KC & Arizona, and...anyone want to guess? Anyone? Jacksonville.
It's hard to stop and acknowledge how absolutely awful the offense really is.
The Te'o debate or a debate for any Def player is over. We have fielded one of the two worst offenses in the NFL for two years in a row and had the worst quarterback situation in the NFL for those same two years. The only other Off player in the top 10 of the draft would be LT Luke Joeckel, and regardless of whether we re-sign Albert or not, an LT doesn't put points on the board.
What about free agent QBs? In Joel's post yesterday he stated that the two most exciting possible free agent QBs in 2013 are Alex Smith and Mike Vick. If we picked up Smith, the collective eye roll from KC would be deafening. If we picked up Vick, it would begin an enormous debate about whether he can return to form along with the perennial argument about why we won't draft a QB. It would also be a PR challenge that I don't think Clark wants to put his team into, especially considering the acts of Jovan Belcher.
I'm not going to predict which QB it will be (collective boos and calls of "copout!" be damned), but it will be a QB. So we can all stop worrying about the rest of the top players in the draft. Keep debating which QB you want - that argument has tons of merit. Then start looking at the top of the second round for other positions on the field.
