I was thrilled when he hired Pioli. I was also thrilled when Pioli brought in Haley and was able to pick up Cassell for a second rounder. Clearly, none of these moves were right, they've all ended in disaster, but looking back, they were clearly the right moves at the time.
What greatly concerns me is the next move. And I don't mean firing Pioli and Romeo, that should be a done deal; I mean who he gets in here to replace them. It seems to me that nearly all the moves made by the Chiefs over the last two years has indicated that they care much more about the bottom line of dollars and cents much more than the bottom line of wins and losses. There were better wide reciever options than Breaston, letting go Brandon Carr for Routt was an obvious money move and even the retention of Romeo was more about saving money than winning games.
This hire needs to demonstrate that Clark Hunt is interested in winning football games. I think it was so obvious to serious football people that winning wasn't the main priority here is why Peyton Manning never really considered coming here, even though many of us thought the chiefs were the best team on paper of any of the Manning suiters. If we hire some nobody for peanuts and then lead the league another year in cap space, you'll have your answer about how serious Clark Hunt is about winning football games.
