I fully expect all the analysts to spend a lot of time this week talking about awful coaching, QB play, the draft, Pioli, etc. But if anyone talks trash on our defense today, Tamba should show up at their door holding Quinn and Crennel by their shirt collars to say, "I think these are the guys you meant to be talking at."
First of all, the Raiders ran for more than 200 yards. That is probably the stat that anyone who wants to blast the defense will bring up (watch, Bob Fescoe will do this exact thing). But they will fail to acknowledge that the Raiders had the ball for 40+ minutes. That's right our offense couldn't stay on the field for more 20 minutes today. That's a staggeringly bad stat. The Chiefs have averaged 30:06 in TOP this year. When your offense can't stay out there, you will get tired.
Second, the defense held the Raiders to only 386 yards. I know...I said "only," but remember that 40 minutes of TOP? Well, Oakland is averaging 360 yards per game and they average less than 30 minutes of TOP. So extrapolate that and in that extra 10 minutes of time, they only got an extra 26 yards. That's pretty damn good.
Third, the Raiders scored five times but only got 15 points. Also, two of those FGs came from 50 and 57 yards out. We kept them out of the end zone. If anyone told me that the Raiders would have the ball for 40 minutes and score five times, I would have guessed they would have scored 27-35 points.
The defense is making it darn hard to justify using that top 2 pick on a defensive player. The offense on the other hand...
