Hello, fellow APers. It's been a while since I've written a fanpost and I think now is the right time to do it.
Like many of you, I'm frustrated with the Chiefs and their lack of on-field success. This season has been a disaster. Not even the most cynical of all saw this coming. The only lead we have held this season has come from an OT victory in New Orleans. We lead the league in turnovers, and there isn't even a close second place team. The defense has underperformed big time. And in the last month, the most notable Chiefs-related news we have seen on ESPN is Eric Winston's rant against the fans who booed at Cassel leaving the game.
Clearly, things need to improve. But how? I've got several ideas that I believe would help us out of this hole.
*Romeo Crennel should hand the DC duties to someone else on his staff. In 2009, Todd Haley fired his OC during the preseason and took over OC duties for the remainder of the regular season. On top of that, he was also coaching the quarterbacks. We all remember how badly that went. Crennel has some pretty good defensive coaches on his staff. Gary Gibbs and Emmitt Thomas are both experienced coaches who could handle the DC duties. Romeo is a great defensive coach, but he can't do it all by himself.
*Stop turning the ball over. That's obvious, but it needs to be repeated: we have the worst turnover margin in the NFL.
*Get a lead. A lead will at least generate some momentum.
*In his last three seasons as OC, Brian Daboll's offenses start to generate some momentum during the midway point of the season. I'm not saying it's a guarantee that the Chiefs offense will suddenly go wild but it's happened before. My advice: be a little more patience with the offense. A breakout performance could be right around the corner.
*Get Dex out of the slot and throw him in the backfield a little more. Give the Chiefs some more options at RB. He's shown the ability to make big plays. Give him a few more opportunities and see what else he can do. He's not really doing anything as a WR, so why keep him there?
That's all for now. I know a lot of this stuff is common knowledge around here on AP but the Chiefs do have some good young talent here and we feel that it isn't being properly utilized. I still think there is time to get things moving in the right direction, but the Chiefs cannot keep making the same mistakes over and over and expect a different result.
