Last week word came down that the Kansas City Chiefs had worked out free agent kicker Matt Szymanski, whose name sounded familiar because he spent some time with the Chiefs in training camp.

The Chiefs announced today that Szymanski has been signed but not to the active roster -- to the practice squad.

This gives the Chiefs an option if Ryan Succop goes down with an injury. Succop, as far as I know, is not hurt right now.

Here is Szymanski's bio from the Chiefs:

Szymanski (6-1, 196) played in 52 games between SMU (2009-10) and Texas A&M (2006-07), competing in 26 contests at each school. He converted 35 of 58 (60.3 pct.) career field goal attempts with a long of 61 yards and was successful on all 131 extra point attempts. He also punted 123 times for 5,105 yards (41.5 avg.) with a long of 74 yards. He was rated the No. 1 kicker in the nation at A&M Consolidated High School in College Station, Texas. Szymanski originally entered the NFL as a college free agent with the Chiefs in May of 2012.
