As Chief fans (as well as most draft followers) we can't get enough information about prospects. This is even more-so when you need a QB and may have the 1st pick. In a lost, horrible season this is at least one thing to get excited about.
I've read a lot about Tyler Wilson. He is tough, a warrior, a leader. He has the arm strength and plays in the SEC. I've been anticipating with great hope to see a young star QB grow into possibly our next franchise player. Then I watch the games and hear myself saying out loud that this guy is AWFUL. Play after play he makes bad decisions and worse throws. Arkansas plays LSU this weekend. Watch the game and tell me if the hype matches the reality.
The polar opposite of him is EJ Manuel. I read that he doesn't have "it". The mental part of his game is flawed. He is inconsistent, not a leader, a long term prospect. Then I watch his games. Florida State's only blemish is a 1 point loss to NC State. If not for that they would currently be in the conversation for the BCS championship. Manuel's talent drips from the screen. 6'5 and 240 pounds and his running skills are a thing of beauty. CBS sports lists his 40 time at 4.64 EJ's delivery is compact, his passes tight spirals, his accuracy is 67% in for years. I understand his criticisms but don't actually SEE them this year. He's a 5th year senior who has become the team leader. Bad decisions? He has 6 interceptions on the year for goodness sake!
This weekend we get to watch both play top 10 SEC teams and I can't wait to watch!
Why should you care?
Let me ask you a few questions: 1- Is it reasonable to think we have a chance at Chip Kelly? YES, we are amongst the worst teams and he is the best candidate.
2- Is it also reasonable to think that we may NOT get Geno Smith? YES, we are tied with Jacksonville. As hard as it is to believe, we still have to play Carolina, Cleveland, Oakland and Indy. We are no "Lock" for the 1st pick and if Geno Smith proves to be the prospect I think he is. There probably will be a lot of competition to trade for him.
In this "reasonable" scenario, who would you want to run Kelly's spread offense? Matt Barkley? He just can't run the ball in the spread offense. I also think he could drop like our own Brady Quinn, maybe more like Jimmy Clausen. Remember hoping that he would be our savior? QB's drop when there measurables don't match the hype.
This leads me back to EJ. Is he ready to come in and start in a traditional NFL offense right now? Probably not. Can I see him come in and run Chip Kelly's offense as a rookie? Probably better than most QB's in the NFL right now. Should you believe me? I ask you not to! I ask you to ignore all the pundits and all the articles you've read. I ask you to trust your eyes.
Watch EJ Manuel this weekend and tell me if he couldn't run Chip Kelly's offense better than any prospect not named Geno Smith. Getting him later or trading down may be our 2nd best option.
