With the 1st Pick in the 2013 NFL Draft the Kansas City Chiefs Select...

It is obvious to me that this time is going nowhere and is going nowhere fast, with that in mind I believe it is time to talk about the draft and what the Chiefs need to do to improve this football team.

Quarterback has to be the top priority of the Chiefs going into next seasons draft. I understand that the problems of this team are much deeper than just Matt Cassel, but an upgrade at that position is not only needed but is completely necessary.

As of now I believe that the Chiefs hold the first pick in the draft, and the selection should come down to one of two players, Geno Smith from West Virgina or Matt Barkley from USC. The question then becomes which QB should the Chiefs take?

The case for Geno Smith. Geno Smith has been the hot name when people discuss the upcoming draft and how he is the front runner for the Heisman Trophy. Smith has all the stats to back up the hype. With a completion percentage of 75.3% and passing for over 2000 yards with 25 Tds and no picks. Smith has lit up the college football landscape, but would he fit in with the Chiefs? Lets just assume that Pioli,Crennel and Daboll all return (big assumption), would Smith fit in? The greatest asset that Smith posses is his tremendous deep ball but the Daboll offense doesn't seem to have a vertical passing game, that could be by design or lack of QB play, but if it is by design Smith doesn't fit perfectly.

The case for Matt Barkley. Matt Barkley in many peoples estimation would've been the second QB chosen in last years draft, going ahead of RG3. Barkley elected to return to school in hopes of winning a BCS Title at USC. Barkley is a prototypical NFL passer, having run a variation of the west coast offense designed by Lane Kiffin for four years at USC. Barkley hasnt had the same eye-popping numbers this year that Smith has had, as Barkley has a completion percentage of 62.7% with just over 1400 yards and 16 Tds with 6 picks. But would Barkley fit better? With the offense that Daboll runs, Barkely would fit in just fine, very simple passes and lots of short and intermediate routes. Barkley has an abilty Cassel doesn't though as he is able to throw the deep ball, this asset could be huge in making the Chiefs a more complete offense next season.

Smith verse Barkley is a battle I don't believe that the Chiefs can lose, both have shown the abilty and look pro ready. Smith has the numbers while Barkley has the status. It is obvious though that the Chiefs need to pick one of these guys in next seasons draft or the Chiefs will be doomed to another season of mediocrity.
